30 Jun 2015TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of a cognitive intervention on cognitive performance of institutionalized older adults were quantified, and it was concluded that cognitive action had a positive effect principally in depressive symptoms.
Abstract: This study aimed to quantify the effects of a cognitive intervention on cognitive performance of institutionalized older adults. Participated five elderly, with average age of 77 years and low education, who were submited to a neuropsychological evaluation, for eight sessions, before and after cognitive intervention. The results of pre and post - tests showed slight effect of the intervention on levels of depression, verbal fluency, memory and praxis. It was concluded that cognitive action had a positive effect principally in depressive symptoms

TL;DR: Geographical variation in the growth pattern of the young of the year Merluccius hubbsi was correlated with the differences found in otolith morphometry, relative growth, ring positions, as well as the formation of a new ring.
Abstract: Morphology and morphometry of the sagittae otolith were studied in young of the year Argentine hake, Merluccius hubbsi in the Southeastern Atlantic. Geographical variation in the growth pattern of the young of the year Merluccius hubbsi was correlated with the differences found in otolith morphometry, relative growth, ring positions, as well as the formation of a new ring. The otolith development of M. hubbsi throughout its area of distribution accompanies an increasing northward temperature gradient, resulting in bigger otoliths and greater variability of ring position from northern to southern area. The canonical discriminate analysis showed that the otolith length and height explained most of the variation of the first discriminant function. We found significant differences in the discriminant scores between those samples from northern and southern area. As regards the Uruguayan coast and Southern Brazil, age groups zero shared some similarity as well as differences in growth; environmental features explain these differences but their effect on the adult fishes growth is still unknown.

TL;DR: By examining rotuli and puncti of the School of Medicine of Padua University, which record the subjects and content taught in the period between 1500 and 1600, one can study the official curriculum of this famous school.
Abstract: This is a partial contribution to an understanding of the history of the reception and transmission of classical Hippocratic and Galenic texts in Italy's modern period. By examining rotuli and puncti of the School of Medicine of Padua University, which record the subjects and content taught in the period between 1500 and 1600, one can study the official curriculum of this famous school. Perusal of these documents shows the commitment of official medical training to tradition, especially with respect to Hippocrates, Galen, Avicenna and Aristotle.

TL;DR: It is suggested that training can prevent cell and tissue damage caused by the process of increase in hepatic fat, lipoperoxidation, and tissue inflammation in animals with privation of estrogen and dyslipidemia.
Abstract: To explore the effects of physical exercise on the liver of animals in menopause, we analyzed the histomorphometric parameters of the hepatic tissue in ovariectomized and dyslipidemic female mice. The animals were distributed in six groups (n = 5): sedentary control (SC), sedentary ovariectomized control (SOC), trained ovariectomized control (TOC), sedentary LDL knockout (LDL-S), sedentary ovariectomized LDL knockout (LDL-SO), and trained ovariectomized LDL knockout (LDL-TO). At the end of the experiment, the liver and the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) of animals were removed for morphometric and stereological studies. In the LDL-S and LDL-SO animals, both sedentary, results showed reduction in the area (µm2) and major and minor diameters (µm) of hepatocytes and reduction in the portions of large hepatocytes, and increase in the percentage of Kupffer cells. The trained group showed a tendency of increase in the area and diameter and in the percentage of hepatocytes, as well significant reduction in the percentage of Kupffer cells and interstitial tissue. We suggested that training can prevent cell and tissue damage caused by the process of increase in hepatic fat, lipoperoxidation, and tissue inflammation in animals with privation of estrogen and dyslipidemia, apparently reflecting a better metabolic response of the hepatic tissue in organisms undergoing training.

TL;DR: The main morphological characters to distinguish Mulcticola from other species of the Philopteridae parasitising Caprimulgiformes are presented and a detailed catalogue for species included in this louse genus is compiled.
Abstract: Five new species of Mulcticola Clay et Meinertzhagen, 1938 are described and illustrated from Brazil. These new species and their hosts are: Mulcticola sicki sp. n. from the sand-coloured nighthawk, Chordeiles rupestris rupestris (Spix), Mulcticola bacurau sp. n. from the common pauraque, Nyctidromus albicollis (Gmelin), Mulcticola tendeiroi sp. n. from the long-trained nightjar, Macropsalis forcipata (Nitzsch), Mulcticola piacentinii sp. n. from the short-tailed nighthawk, Lurocalis semitorquatus semitorquatus (Gmelin) (type-host) and L. s. nattereri (Temminck), and Mulcticola parvulus sp. n. from the little nightjar, Setopagis parvula (Gould). These species were compared primarily with Mulcticola nacunda Carriker, 1945 from the nacunda nighthawk, Chordeiles nacunda nacunda (Vieillot), which is one of the species of Mulcticola previously recorded in the Neotropical region. All the five new species described herein differ from their congeners by exclusive characters such as the shape of anterior dorsal head plate, metasternal plate, subvulvar plates in females and genitalia in males. We increased the number of species in Mulcticola to 18 in total, with seven of them now known from the Neotropics. We present the main morphological characters to distinguish Mulcticola from other species of the Philopteridae parasitising Caprimulgiformes and also compile a detailed catalogue for species included in this louse genus.
