Production and detection of cold antihydrogen atoms

Abstract: A theoretical underpinning of the standard model of fundamental particles and interactions is CPT invariance, which requires that the laws of physics be invariant under the combined discrete operations of charge conjugation, parity and time reversal. Antimatter, the existence of which was predicted by Dirac, can be used to test the CPT theorem—experimental investigations involving comparisons of particles with antiparticles are numerous1. Cold atoms and anti-atoms, such as hydrogen and antihydrogen, could form the basis of a new precise test, as CPT invariance implies that they must have the same spectrum. Observations of antihydrogen in small quantities and at high energies have been reported at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN)2 and at Fermilab3, but these experiments were not suited to precision comparison measurements. Here we demonstrate the production of antihydrogen atoms at very low energy by mixing trapped antiprotons and positrons in a cryogenic environment. The neutral anti-atoms have been detected directly when they escape the trap and annihilate, producing a characteristic signature in an imaging particle detector.

Metodologias ativas de ensino-aprendizagem na formação profissional em saúde: debates atuais

Abstract: As vertiginosas transformacoes das sociedades contemporâneas tem colocado em questao, de modo cada vez mais incisivo, os aspectos relativos a formacao profissional. Este debate ganha contornos proprios no trabalho em saude, na medida em que a indissociabilidade entre teoria e pratica, o desenvolvimento de uma visao integral do homem e a ampliacao da concepcao de cuidado tornam-se prementes para o adequado desempenho laboral. Com base nestas consideracoes, o objetivo do presente artigo e discutir as principais transformacoes metodologicas no processo de formacao dos profissionais de saude, com enfase na apreciacao das metodologias ativas de ensino-aprendizagem.

Extraction of pectin from apple pomace

Abstract: As apple-processing units are now in expansion in Brazil, industrial by-products like pomace play an important role in pectin manufacture. The objective of this article was to determine a pratical follow-up to the extraction of pectin from apple pomace and to characterize it in a laboratory, on a small scale, aiming at establishing the optimum conditions for acid extraction. The highest yields were obtained when [1]apple pomace was dried and ground to obtain an apple flour to be used as raw material, [2] citric or nitric acids were used and [3] when the citric acid concentration was 6.2 g/100 ml and the time of reaction was 153 minutes. The apple variety in itself was not significant in pectin yield. The degree of esterification (DE = 68.84 %) of the product obtained, as well as its physical looks, show the success of pectin extraction.

Produção de biocombustível alternativo ao óleo diesel através da transesterificação de óleo de soja usado em frituras

Abstract: In this work, the utilization of used frying oil for the production of biodiesel is presented. The performance of biodiesel in diesel engines, as well as the characterization of the emissions derived from this process, are also discussed and compared to the emissions derived from engines running on unused vegetable oils and conventional diesel.
