Abstract: Checking data possession in networked information systems such as those related to critical infrastructures (power facilities, airports, data vaults, defense systems, etc.) is a matter of crucial importance. Remote data possession checking protocols permit to check that a remote server can access an uncorrupted file in such a way that the verifier does not need to know beforehand the entire file that is being verified. Unfortunately, current protocols only allow a limited number of successive verifications or are impractical from the computational point of view. In this paper, we present a new remote data possession checking protocol such that: 1) it allows an unlimited number of file integrity verifications; 2) its maximum running time can be chosen at set-up time and traded off against storage at the verifier.

Abstract: General features of the energetics and electronic states of carbon nanotubes, containing pentagon-heptagon pair (5/7) topological defects in the hexagonal network of the zigzag configuration, are investigated within simple tight-binding models. This 5/7 pair defect on the nanotube structure is not only responsible for a change in nanotube diameter, but also governs the electronic behavior around the Fermi level. Furthermore, nanotubes having different helicities and different electronic properties can be connected using such a pair. Various configurations including one, two, and three 5/7 pairs are explored in order to understand the influence of several defects on the electronic properties of the system. Topological aspects associated with the presence of 5/7 pair defects in armchair and chiral nanotubes are also discussed.

Abstract: High rate of glycolysis is a metabolic hallmark of cancer. While anaerobic glycolysis promotes energy production under hypoxia, aerobic glycolysis, the Warburg effect, offers a proliferative advantage through redirecting carbohydrate fluxes from energy production to biosynthetic pathways. To fulfill tumor cell needs, the glycolytic switch is associated with elevated glucose uptake and lactic acid release. Altered glucose metabolism is the basis of positron emission tomography using the glucose analogue tracer [18F]- fluorodeoxyglucose, a widely used clinical application for tumor diagnosis and monitoring. On the other hand, high levels of lactate have been associated with poor clinical outcome in several types of human cancers. Although lactic acid was initially considered merely as an indicator of the glycolytic flux, many evidences originally from the study of normal tissue physiology and more recently transposed to the tumor situation indicate that lactic acid, i.e. the lactate anion and protons, directly contributes to tumor growth and progression. Here, we briefly review the current knowledge pertaining to lactic acidosis and metastasis, lactate shuttles, the influence of lactate on redox homeostasis, lactate signaling and lactate-induced angiogenesis in the cancer context. The monocarboxylate transporters MCT1 and MCT4 have now been confirmed as prominent facilitators of lactate exchanges between cancer cells with different metabolic behaviors and between cancer and stromal cells. We therefore address the function and regulation of MCTs, highlighting MCT1 as a novel anticancer target. MCT1 inhibition allows to simultaneously disrupt metabolic cooperativity and angiogenesis in cancer with a same agent, opening a new path for novel anticancer therapies.

Abstract: Salt-resistant rice cultivars Nona Bokra and IR 4630 exposed at the seedling stage during one or two weeks to 0, 20, 30, 40 or 50 mM NaCl accumulated less Na, Cl, Zn and proline and more K at root and shoot levels than salt-sensitive I Kong Pao and IR 31785. Aiwu, a moderately resistant genotype, exhibited an intermediate behaviour. P transport from root to shoot was inhibited in the most sensitive cultivar IR 31785. Accumulation of Na and Cl and decrease in K content at the shoot level were restricted to the oldest leaves in salt-resistant genotypes while proline accumulated in the youngest leaves in all cultivars. In the presence of NaCl, the osmotic potentials of the roots and of the oldest and youngest leaves were lower in the salt-resistant than in the salt-sensitive genotypes, differences among genotypes increasing with stress intensity. Proline did not appear to be involved in osmotic adjustment in salt-stressed rice plants and the significance of its accumulation is discussed in relation to salinity resistance.
