Abstract: This paper presents a summary of the FactSage thermochemical software and databases. FactSage was introduced in 2001 and is the fusion of the FACT-Win/F∗A∗C∗T and ChemSage/SOLGASMIX thermochemical packages that were founded over 25 years ago. The FactSage package runs on a PC operating under Microsoft Windows® and consists of a series of information, database, calculation and manipulation modules that enable one to access and manipulate pure substances and solution databases. With the various modules one can perform a wide variety of thermochemical calculations and generate tables, graphs and figures of interest to chemical and physical metallurgists, chemical engineers, corrosion engineers, inorganic chemists, geochemists, ceramists, electrochemists, environmentalists, etc. In this article emphasis is placed on the calculation and manipulation of phase diagrams. However the reputation of FactSage has been established mainly in the field of complex chemical equilibria and process simulation where the software has unique capabilities. Some of these capabilities are also shown in this paper.

Abstract: Background: Bone metastases are a common cause of morbidity in patients with prostate carcinoma. We studied the effect of a new bisphosphonate, zoledronic acid, which blocks bone destruction, on skeletal complications in prostate cancer patients with bone metastases. Methods: Patients with hormone-refractory prostate cancer and a history of bone metastases were randomly assigned to a double-blind treatment regimen of intravenous zoledronic acid at 4 mg (N = 214), zoledronic acid at 8 mg (subsequently reduced to 4 mg; 8/4) (N = 221), or placebo (N = 208) every 3 weeks for 15 months. Proportions of patients with skeletal-related events, time to the first skeletal-related event, skeletal morbidity rate, pain and analgesic scores, disease progression, and safety were assessed. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: Approximately 38% of patients who received zoledronic acid at 4 mg, 28% who received zoledronic acid at 8/4 mg, and 31% who received placebo completed the study. A greater proportion of patients who received placebo had skeletal-related events than those who received zoledronic acid at 4 mg (44.2% versus 33.2%; difference = –11.0%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = –20.3% to –1.8%; P = .021) or those who received zoledronic acid at 8/4 mg (38.5%; difference versus placebo = –5.8%, 95% CI = –15.1% to 3.6%; P = .222). Median time to first skeletalrelated event was 321 days for patients who received placebo, was not reached for patients who received zoledronic acid at 4 mg ( P= .011 versus placebo), and was 363 days for those who received zoledronic acid at 8/4 mg ( P= .491 versus placebo). Compared with urinary markers in patients who received placebo, urinary markers of bone resorption were statistically significantly decreased in patients who received zoledronic acid at either dose (P = .001). Pain and analgesic scores increased more in patients who received placebo than in patients who received zoledronic acid, but there were no differences in disease progression, performance status, or quality-of-life scores among the groups. Zoledronic acid at 4 mg given as a 15-minute infusion was well tolerated, but the 8-mg dose was associated with renal function deterioration. Conclusion: Zoledronic acid at 4 mg reduced skeletalrelated events in prostate cancer patients with bone metastases. [J Natl Cancer Inst 2002;94:1458–68]

Abstract: Background Patients with neutropenia and persistent fever are often treated empirically with amphotericin B or liposomal amphotericin B to prevent invasive fungal infections. Antifungal triazoles offer a potentially safer and effective alternative. Methods In a randomized, international, multicenter trial, we compared voriconazole, a new second-generation triazole, with liposomal amphotericin B for empirical antifungal therapy. Results A total of 837 patients (415 assigned to voriconazole and 422 to liposomal amphotericin B) were evaluated for success of treatment. The overall success rates were 26.0 percent with voriconazole and 30.6 percent with liposomal amphotericin B (95 percent confidence interval for the difference, –10.6 to 1.6 percentage points); these rates were independent of the administration of antifungal prophylaxis or the use of colony-stimulating factors. Abstract: There is dual tactile innervation of the human hairy skin: in addition to fast-conducting myelinated afferent fibers, there is a system of slow-conducting unmyelinated (C) afferents that respond to light touch. In a unique patient lacking large myelinated afferents, we found that activation of C tactile (CT) afferents produced a faint sensation of pleasant touch. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis during CT stimulation showed activation of the insular region, but not of somatosensory areas S1 and S2. These findings identify CT as a system for limbic touch that may underlie emotional, hormonal and affiliative responses to caress-like, skin-to-skin contact between individuals.

Abstract: BABAR, the detector for the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric e+e- B Factory operating at the upsilon 4S resonance, was designed to allow comprehensive studies of CP-violation in B-meson decays. Charged particle tracks are measured in a multi-layer silicon vertex tracker surrounded by a cylindrical wire drift chamber. Electromagentic showers from electrons and photons are detected in an array of CsI crystals located just inside the solenoidal coil of a superconducting magnet. Muons and neutral hadrons are identified by arrays of resistive plate chambers inserted into gaps in the steel flux return of the magnet. Charged hadrons are identified by dE/dx measurements in the tracking detectors and in a ring-imaging Cherenkov detector surrounding the drift chamber. The trigger, data acquisition and data-monitoring systems, VME- and network-based, are controlled by custom-designed online software. Details of the layout and performance of the detector components and their associated electronics and software are presented.

Abstract: The Rho signaling pathway regulates the cytoskeleton and motility and plays an important role in neuronal growth inhibition. Here we demonstrate that inactivation of Rho or its downstream target Rho-associated kinase (ROK) stimulated neurite growth in primary cells of cortical neurons plated on myelin or chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan substrates. Furthermore, treatment either with C3 transferase (C3) to inactivate Rho or with Y27632 to inhibit ROK was sufficient to stimulate axon regeneration and recovery of hindlimb function after spinal cord injury (SCI) in adult mice. Injured mice were treated with a single injection of Rho or Rho-associated kinase inhibitors delivered in a protein adhesive at the lesion site. Treated animals showed long-distance regeneration of anterogradely labeled corticospinal axons and increased levels of GAP-43 mRNA in the motor cortex. Behaviorally, inactivation of Rho pathway induced rapid recovery of locomotion and progressive recuperation of forelimb–hindlimb coordination. These findings provide evidence that the Rho signaling pathway is a potential target for therapeutic interventions after spinal cord injury.

Abstract: In the last four to five years, the view that G protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs) function as monomeric proteins has been challenged by numerous studies, which suggests that GPCRs exist as dimers or even higher-structure oligomers. Recently, biophysical methods based on luminescence and fluorescence energy transfer have confirmed the existence of such oligomeric complexes in living cells. Although no consensus exists on the role of receptor dimerization, converging evidence suggests potential roles in various aspects of receptor biogenesis and function. In several cases, receptors appear to fold as constitutive dimers early after biosynthesis, whereas ligand-promoted dimerization at the cell surface has been proposed for others. Abstract: A major source of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) superoxide is NAD(P)H oxidase. However, the molecular characteristics and regulation of this enzyme are unclear. We investigated whether VSMCs from human resistance arteries (HVSMCs) possess a functionally active, angiotensin II (Ang II)–regulated NAD(P)H oxidase that contains neutrophil oxidase subunits, including p22phox, gp91phox, p40phox, p47phox, and p67phox. mRNA expression of gp91phox homologues, nox1 and nox4, was also assessed in HVSMCs, human aortic smooth muscle cells, and rat VSMCs. HVSMCs were obtained from resistance arteries from gluteal biopsies of healthy subjects. gp91phox and nox4, but not nox1, were detected in HVSMCs. Nox1 and nox4, but not gp91phox, were expressed in human aortic smooth muscle cells and rat VSMCs. All NAD(P)H oxidase subunits were present in HVSMCs as detected by reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction and immunoblotting. Ang II increased NAD(P)H oxidase subunit abundance. These effects were inhibited by cycloheximide. Acute Ang II stimulation (10 to 15 minutes) increased p47phox serine phosphorylation and induced p47phox and p67phox translocation. This was associated with NAD(P)H oxidase activation. In cells transfected with gp91phox antisense oligonucleotides, Ang II–mediated actions were abrogated. NADPH-induced superoxide generation was reduced by gp91ds-tat and apocynin, inhibitors of p47phox-gp91phox interactions. Our results suggest that HVSMCs possess a functionally active gp91phox-containing neutrophil-like NAD(P)H oxidase. Ang II regulates the enzyme by inducing phosphorylation of p47phox, translocation of cytosolic subunits, and de novo protein synthesis. These novel findings provide insight into the molecular regulation of NAD(P)H oxidase by Ang II in HVSMCs. Furthermore, we identify differences in gp91phox homologue expression in VSMCs from rats and human small and large arteries.

Abstract: Although many genes that predispose for epilepsy in humans have been determined, those that underlie the classical syndromes of idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) have yet to be identified. We report that an Ala322Asp mutation in GABRA1, encoding the alpha1 subunit of the gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor subtype A (GABA(A)), is found in affected individuals of a large French Canadian family with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. Compared with wildtype receptors, GABA(A) receptors that contain the mutant subunit show a lesser amplitude of GABA-activated currents in vitro, indicating that seizures may result from loss of function of this inhibitory ligand-gated channel. Our results confirm that mutation of GABRA1 predisposes towards a common idiopathic generalized epilepsy syndrome in humans.

Abstract: Objective: To determine the frequency of REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) among patients with PD using both history and polysomnography (PSG) recordings and to further study REM sleep muscle atonia in PD. Background: The reported occurrence of RBD in PD varies from 15 to 47%. However, no study has estimated the frequency of RBD using PSG recordings or analyzed in detail the characteristics of REM sleep muscle atonia in a large group of unselected patients with PD. Methods: Consecutive patients with PD (n = 33) and healthy control subjects (n = 16) were studied. Each subject underwent a structured clinical interview and PSG recording. REM sleep was scored using a method that allows the scoring of REM sleep without atonia. Results: One third of patients with PD met the diagnostic criteria of RBD based on PSG recordings. Only one half of these cases would have been detected by history. Nineteen (58%) of 33 patients with PD but only 1 of 16 control subjects had REM sleep without atonia. Of these 19 patients with PD, 8 (42%) did not present with behavioral manifestations of RBD, and their cases may represent preclinical forms of RBD associated with PD. Moreover, the percentage of time spent with muscle atonia during REM sleep was lower among patients with PD than among healthy control subjects (60.1% vs 93.2%; p = 0.003). Conclusions: RBD and REM sleep without atonia are frequent in PD as shown by PSG recordings.

Abstract: Utilizing a plasma to achieve sterilization is a possible alternative to conventional sterilization means as far as sterilization of heat-sensitive materials and innocuity of steriliz- ing agents are concerned. A major issue of plasma sterilization is the respective roles of ultra- violet (UV) photons and reactive species such as atomic and molecular radicals. At reduced gas pressure (≤10 torr) and in mixtures containing oxygen, the UV photons dominate the inactivation process, with a significant contribution of oxygen atoms as an erosion agent. Actually, as erosion of the spore progresses, the number of UV photons successfully inter- acting with the genetic material increases. The different physicochemical processes at play during plasma sterilization are identified and analyzed, based on the specific characteristics of the spore survival curves.

Abstract: Various lines of evidence indicate that men generally experience greater sexual arousal (SA) to erotic stimuli than women. Yet, little is known regarding the neurobiological processes underlying such a gender difference. To investigate this issue, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to compare the neural correlates of SA in 20 male and 20 female subjects. Brain activity was measured while male and female subjects were viewing erotic film excerpts. Results showed that the level of perceived SA was significantly higher in male than in female subjects. When compared to viewing emotionally neutral film excerpts, viewing erotic film excerpts was associated, for both genders, with bilateral blood oxygen level dependant (BOLD) signal increases in the anterior cingulate, medial prefrontal, orbitofrontal, insular, and occipitotemporal cortices, as well as in the amygdala and the ventral striatum. Only for the group of male subjects was there evidence of a significant activation of the thalamus and hypothalamus, a sexually dimorphic area of the brain known to play a pivotal role in physiological arousal and sexual behavior. When directly compared between genders, hypothalamic activation was found to be significantly greater in male subjects. Furthermore, for male subjects only, the magnitude of hypothalamic activation was positively correlated with reported levels of SA. These findings reveal the existence of similarities and dissimilarities in the way the brain of both genders responds to erotic stimuli. They further suggest that the greater SA generally experienced by men, when viewing erotica, may be related to the functional gender difference found here with respect to the hypothalamus. Hum. Abstract: ContextHormone replacement therapy (HRT) and antioxidant vitamins are widely used for secondary prevention in postmenopausal women with coronary disease, but no clinical trials have demonstrated benefit to support their use.ObjectiveTo determine whether HRT or antioxidant vitamin supplements, alone or in combination, influence the progression of coronary artery disease in postmenopausal women, as measured by serial quantitative coronary angiography.Design, Setting, and PatientsThe Women's Angiographic Vitamin and Estrogen (WAVE) Trial, a randomized, double-blind trial of 423 postmenopausal women with at least one 15% to 75% coronary stenosis at baseline coronary angiography. The trial was conducted from July 1997 to January 2002 in 7 clinical centers in the United States and Canada.InterventionsPatients were randomly assigned in a 2 × 2 factorial design to receive either 0.625 mg/d of conjugated equine estrogen (plus 2.5 mg/d of medroxyprogesterone acetate for women who had not had a hysterectomy), or matching placebo, and 400 IU of vitamin E twice daily plus 500 mg of vitamin C twice daily, or placebo.Main Outcome MeasureAnnualized mean (SD) change in minimum lumen diameter (MLD) from baseline to concluding angiogram of all qualifying coronary lesions averaged for each patient. Patients with intercurrent death or myocardial infarction (MI) were imputed the worst rank of angiographic outcome.ResultsThe mean (SD) interval between angiograms was 2.8 (0.9) years. Coronary progression, measured in mean (SD) change, worsened with HRT by 0.047 (0.15) mm/y and by 0.024 (0.15) mm/y with HRT placebo (P = .17); and for antioxidant vitamins by 0.044 (0.15) mm/y and with vitamin placebo by 0.028 (0.15) mm/y (P = .32). When patients with intercurrent death or MI were included, the primary outcome showed an increased risk for women in the active HRT group (P = .045), and suggested an increased risk in the active vitamin group (P = .09). Fourteen patients died in the HRT group and 8 in the HRT placebo group (hazard ratio [HR], 1.8; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.75-4.3), and 16 in the vitamin group and 6 in the vitamin placebo group (HR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.1-7.2). Death, nonfatal MI, or stroke occurred in 26 HRT patients vs 15 HRT controls (HR, 1.9; 95% CI, 0.97-3.6) and in 26 vitamin patients and 18 vitamin controls (HR, 1.5; 95% CI, 0.80-2.9). There was no interaction between the 2 treatment interventions.ConclusionIn postmenopausal women with coronary disease, neither HRT nor antioxidant vitamin supplements provide cardiovascular benefit. Instead, a potential for harm was suggested with each treatment.

Abstract: Query expansion has long been suggested as an effective way to resolve the short query and word mismatching problems A number of query expansion methods have been proposed in traditional information retrieval However, these previous methods do not take into account the specific characteristics of web searching; in particular, of the availability of large amount of user interaction information recorded in the web query logs In this study, we propose a new method for query expansion based on query logs The central idea is to extract probabilistic correlations between query terms and document terms by analyzing query logs These correlations are then used to select high-quality expansion terms for new queries The experimental results show that our log-based probabilistic query expansion method can greatly improve the search performance and has several advantages over other existing methods

Abstract: The condition of congenital amusia, commonly known as tone-deafness, has been described for more than a century, but has received little empirical attention. In the present study, a research effort has been made to document in detail the behavioural manifestations of congenital amusia. A group of 11 adults, fitting stringent criteria of musical disabilities, were examined in a series of tests originally designed to assess the presence and specificity of musical disorders in brain-damaged patients. The results show that congenital amusia is related to severe deficiencies in processing pitch variations. The deficit extends to impairments in music memory and recognition as well as in singing and the ability to tap in time to music. Interestingly, the disorder appears specific to the musical domain. Congenital amusical individuals process and recognize speech, including speech prosody, common environmental sounds and human voices, as well as control subjects. Thus, the present study convincingly demonstrates the existence of congenital amusia as a new class of learning disabilities that affect musical abilities.

Abstract: Query clustering is a process used to discover frequently asked questions or most popular topics on a search engine. This process is crucial for search engines based on question-answering. Because of the short lengths of queries, approaches based on keywords are not suitable for query clustering. This paper describes a new query clustering method that makes use of user logs which allow us to identify the documents the users have selected for a query. The similarity between two queries may be deduced from the common documents the users selected for them. Our experiments show that a combination of both keywords and user logs is better than using either method alone.

Abstract: We propose an approach that allows a rigorous understanding of the visual categorization and recognition process without asking direct questions about unobservable memory representations. Our approach builds on the selective use of visual information in recognition and a new method (Bubbles) to depict and measure what this information is. We examine three face-recognition tasks (identity, gender, expressive or not) and establish the componential and holistic information responsible for recognition performance. On the basis of this information, we derive task-specific gradients of probability for the allocation of attention to the different regions of the face.
