Abstract: This essay aims to “materialize” organizational communication in three senses. First, we seek to make the field of study bearing this name more tangible for North American management scholars, such that recognition and engagement become common. To do so, we trace the development of the field’s major contribution thus far: the communication‐as‐constitutive principle, which highlights how communication generates defining realities of organizational life, such as culture, power, networks, and the structure–agency relation. Second, we argue that this promising contribution cannot easily find traction in management studies until it becomes “materialized” in another sense: that is, accountable to the materiality evident in organizational objects, sites, and bodies. By synthesizing current moves in this direction, we establish the basis for sustained exchange between management studies and the communication‐as‐constitutive model. Abstract: The periodontium, defined as those tissues supporting and investing the tooth, comprises root cementum, periodontal ligament, bone lining the tooth socket (alveolar bone), and that part of the gingiva facing the tooth (dentogingival junction). The widespread occurrence of periodontal diseases and the realization that lost tissues can be repaired and, perhaps, regenerated has generated considerable interest in the factors and cells regulating their formation and maintenance. It is important to understand that each of the periodontal components has its very specialized structure and that these structural characteristics directly define function. Indeed, proper functioning of the periodontium is only achieved through structural integrity and interaction between its components. In recent years, a number of detailed descriptions of the structural and compositional features of periodontal tissues have been published (3, 5‐7, 9, 15, 17, 46, 50, 56, 58, 61); we refer the reader to these for a comprehensive description of the development, formation, and structure of periodontal tissues. The present review will focus on structure‐function relationships pertinent to understanding periodontal tissue breakdown and the repair ⁄ regeneration of affected structures.

Abstract: We analyze the linear absorption spectrum of regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) films spun from a variety of solvents to probe directly the film microstructure and how it depends on processing conditions. We estimate the exciton bandwidth and the percentage of the film composed of aggregates quantitatively using a weakly interacting H-aggregate model. This provides a description of the degree and quality of crystallites within the film and is in turn correlated with thin-film field-effect transistor characteristics.

Abstract: The ICML 2013 Workshop on Challenges in Representation Learning focused on three challenges: the black box learning challenge, the facial expression recognition challenge, and the multimodal learning challenge. We describe the datasets created for these challenges and summarize the results of the competitions. We provide suggestions for organizers of future challenges and some comments on what kind of knowledge can be gained from machine learning competitions.

Abstract: Why is turnout higher in some countries and/or in some elections than in others? Why does it increase or decrease over time? To address these questions, I start with the pioneer studies of Powell and Jackman and then review more recent research. This essay seeks to establish which propositions about the causes of variations in turnout are consistently supported by empirical evidence and which ones remain ambiguous. I point out some enigmas and gaps in the field and suggest directions for future research. Most of the research pertains to established democracies, but analyses of nonestablished democracies are also included here.
