TL;DR: In the eastern Hudson Bay area, a "staircase" of 185 Holocene strandlines provides a continuous record of emergence from about 8,000 yr B.P. (sidereal) to the present as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: In the eastern Hudson Bay area, a “staircase” of 185 Holocene strand-lines provides a continuous record of emergence from about 8,000 yr B.P. (sidereal) to the present. Ages were obtained from corrected radiocarbon analyses of shells and from application of a newly discovered 45-yr cycle in beach building that is presumed to be related to the “double Hale” solar cycle. Thus, we deduced a record of climatic storminess. The mean curve of emergence confirms Andrews9s model of glacio-isostatic uplift. Analysis of the residuals in the emergence curve can be transformed to an approximate eustatic curve, which shows some degree of coincidence with other sea-level curves derived from low latitudes as well as with several climatic indicators. The strandline analysis appears to be a powerful new tool for Holocene climate analysis and prediction.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identified the distinctive features of dominion capitalism, a specific configuration of parallel economic structures which distinguish these five nations as a distinctive category within the world economy, and labelled this specific category as "dominion capitalism".
Abstract: The capitalist social orders of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, as well as Argentina and Uruguay, exhibit a specific configuration of parallel economic structures which distinguish these five nations as a distinctive category within the world economy. Given the formal status of Canada, Australia and New Zealand as self-governing white dominions within the British Empire, and the informal economic integration of Argentina and Uruguay as ’honorary dominions’ within the Empire up until World War I, we label this specific category as ’dominion capitalism’. The salient features of dominion capitalism are :-

TL;DR: Maternal reports, observations of nursery and elementary school behavior, and teacher ratings of problems were available for hyperactive and control children who had participated in a longitudinal study, and data indicate continuities in both maternal reports and child behaviors.
Abstract: Maternal reports, observations of nursery and elementary school behavior, and teacher ratings of problems were available for hyperactive and control children who had participated in a longitudinal study. This paper examines consistencies in maternal reports and child behaviors over time, and their relationship to teacher ratings in elementary school. Maternal reports of infant sleep difficulties were related to maternal ratings of hyperactivity at 4 1/2 and 6 1/2 years. Maternal ratings of activity at 4 1/2 were predictive of 6 1/2-year ratings of hyperactivity and conduct problems. In addition, behavior in a research nursery at 4 1/2 predicted teacher ratings of problems and classroom behavior in grade two. Hyperactive preschoolers who left the table most during structured activities were more often out-of-seat and off-task in school. Controls who were more aggressive in the nursery were more disruptive in the classroom. These data indicate continuities in both maternal reports and child behaviors.

TL;DR: In this article, a Social Agonism Inventory describing specific initiation and response behaviors during episodes of social conflict was used to code agonistic activity and dyadic interactions were examined to determine whether the resolution of agonistic interactions conformed to a linear model of social dominance.
Abstract: Social agonism and dominance relations were assessed in two preschool groups. An average of 30 hours of observational data was obtained for each group during free-play over a six-week period. A Social Agonism Inventory describing specific initiation and response behaviors during episodes of social conflict was used to code agonistic activity. Dyadic interactions were examined to determine whether the resolution of agonistic interactions conformed to a linear model of social dominance. Although there were group differences in the relative frequency of different forms of conflict, systematic comparison of agonistic wins and losses re vealed similarly rigid and linear dominance structures at both preschools. The relation of aggression and dominance was empirically examined by comparing the initiation and receipt of agonism by high vs low dominance status children. Higher dominance status children engaged in more agonistic interactions, but a majority of these interactions were directed toward other high-ranking group members.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown on the basis of quantum chemical and spectroscopic arguments that through a consideration of the hydrogen bond and other intermolecular associations affecting the Schiff-base of retinal in the ground and excited states, a new assessment can be made of the conditions related to the photochemical primary step of vision.

TL;DR: In this article, the infrared spectra in chloroform d solution of a number of aliphatic amines, pyridine derivatives and non-aromatic Schiff bases have been measured.
Abstract: — The knowledge of the basicity of non-aromatic Schiff-bases is important for the interpretation of the photochemical primary step of vision. In order to obtain an estimate of it, the infrared spectra in chloroform d solution of a number of aliphatic amines, pyridine derivatives and non-aromatic Schiff- bases have been measured. From the known pKa values of the aliphatic and pyridine bases and the free-associated frequency shift (Av) of the C—D. N hydrogen bonds, the pKa values for the Schiff-bases were inferred. They range from 6 to 8. 5, less basic than aliphatic amines but somewhat more basic than pyridine bases.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined children's and teachers' perception of social dominance using a behavioral criterion for determining accuracy of verbal judgments, and found that teachers could accurately judge dyadic dominance relations, and that accuracy varied as a function of their status within the group hierarchy.
Abstract: Children's and teachers' perception of social dominance was examined using a behavioral criterion for determining accuracy of verbal judgments. Video records of agonistic interactions were obtained during approximately 60 hours of free-play at two preschool centers. Analyses of social conflict episodes ending in submission revealed linear dominance structures for both groups. Dominance perception was assessed in two ways. Both teachers and children were asked to rank-order a subgroup of children according to dominance. They were also asked to select the more dominant children in a number of predetermined pairs. Results indicated that teachers could accurately judge dyadic dominance relations, and that accuracy among children varied as a function of their status within the group hierarchy. Findings have implications for social dominance assessment methodology, and for the issue of consensual versus ecological validity in developmental studies of social perception.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce a theory of the triplet (S, I, R) with syntaxe and semantique, which is based on the theory of Shannon.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discussed the factors affecting the magnitude and frequency of these components and related to recordings of actual shaft torque, including magnetic saliency and nonuniform rotor windings.
Abstract: During run-up as an induction motor, the torque produced by a synchronous machine has oscillating components in addition to the natural frequencies of torsional oscillation of the complete drive system so that the shaft torque may differ substantially from the motor electromagnetic torque. The latter can be divided into four components: 1) a unidirectional or accelerating component, 2) an oscillating component due to magnetic saliency and nonuniform rotor windings, 3) oscillating components due to higher harmonics of air gap permeance and winding magnetomotive force, and 4) components caused by switching the supply. In addition, slot effects and magnetic saturation may also lead to oscillating torque components. The factors affecting the magnitude and frequency of these components are discussed and related to recordings of actual shaft torque.

TL;DR: Consideration of these results indicates that the critical factor determining the higher rates of response under the S:R:IS contingency may be the S-shaped occasions experienced only in the instrumental procedure.
Abstract: The effects of stimulus-incentive (S:IS) contingency, stimulus-response-incentive (S:R:IS) contingency, and stimulus-no-response-incentive (S:R:IS) contingency on the acquisition and maintenance of an instrumental approach-contact response in the rat were studied. The experiment, concerned mainly with the temporal distribution of responses, showed that (1) the S:IS contingency and the S:R:IS contingency produced the same temporal distribution of responses; (2) the S:R:IS contingency produced higher rates of response than the S:IS contingency; (3) the negative S:R:IS contingency did not completely eradicate already established responses; and (4)post-CS responding occurred on reinforced trials. Consideration of these results indicates that the critical factor determining the higher rates of response under the S:R:IS contingency may be the S:R:IS occasions experienced only in the instrumental procedure.

TL;DR: The Office de Radio-T616diffusion du Quebec (Radio-Quebec) as discussed by the authors was founded by the Quebec government in 1969 as an educational television service, which was also perceived as an historic affirmation of Quebec's constitutional rights in the field of broadcasting.
Abstract: Radio-Quebec, or the Office de Radio-T616diffusion du Quebec, was founded by the Quebec government in 1969 as an educational television service. This meant that it was parallel, in some respects, to the Ontario Educational Communications Authority or to the "ETV" stations of the Public Broadcasting Service in the United States. It was also perceived (within Quebec) as an historic affirmation of Quebec's constitutional rights in the field of broadcasting. Subsequent to its foundation, Radio-Quebec began a process of development which passed through two distinct phases. The first was that of the foundation itself: the transition from "symbolic affirmation" to "quiescence," characterized by the adoption of a "low profile" and by the concentration on audio-visual documentaries. The second saw a return to a more dynamic, more broadcasting-oriented stance. These "reinterpretations" of Radio-Quebec's mandate took place without any change in the Radio-Quebec Act. It will be argued in this paper that these changes in Radio-Quebec's view of its mandate can be related to the organization's need to secure a certain minimally-acceptable level of support from its environment. The process by which an organization establishes itself successfully within a particular environment may be referred to as "institutionalization," or "legitimization" or-as in the present paper -"institution-building." What these different notions have in common is the idea of a progressive evolution toward "institutionality";1 that is, toward a growing acceptance of the "rightness" of the organization's goals, methods, and procedures, and hence of its right

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused on analyzing the economic, demographic or cultural factors explaining the high percentage of French Canadians in Montreal's housing conditions and the excessively high proportion of French-Canadians in that type of tenure.
Abstract: The housing conditions in Montreal are mainly characterized by the two following features: firstly, the high percentage of tenants, secondly, the excessively high proportion of French Canadians in that type of tenure. In spite of this important disequilibrium, there are few systematic analysis of the economic, demographic or cultural factors explaining such a phenomenon. The following paper is aimed at filling this gap. The first part deals with theoretical considerations; the second part contains the specification of the model, the method of estimation and the statistical data used for the estimation; the third part analyses the results and brings up the main conclusions.
