TL;DR: The relative importance of thickening and strike-slip extrusion in continental collision is discussed in this paper, where the authors show that for > 500 km, mylonites in this narrow northwest-southeast belt show horizontal lineations on steep, northwest-striking foliation planes, and left-lateral kinematic indicators.
Abstract: The relative importance of thickening and strike-slip extrusion in continental collision is debated. Ductile shear in the Ailao Shan/Diancang Shan metamorphic belt, along the Red River in Yunnan, China, yields outstanding evidence of the latter process. For > 500 km, mylonites in this narrow northwest-southeast belt show horizontal lineations on steep, northwest-striking foliation planes, and left-lateral kinematic indicators. U–Pb radiometric ages of ∼23 Myr imply that strike-slip movement along this shear zone occurred in the Oligo-Miocene. The strain observed suggests that collision of India with Asia displaced Indochina at least 500km southeastwards relative to South China.

TL;DR: A number of proposals aimed at characterising the notion ‘possible syllable' and ‘Possible word’ will be formulated, which follow from what the author sees as a unified theory of phonological government.
Abstract: Our aim in this paper is to address certain empirical and conceptual issues in the theory of Universal Phonology. Specifically, we will formulate a number of proposals aimed at characterising the notion ‘possible syllable' and ‘possible word'. The principles we will lay out follow from what we see as a unified theory of phonological government. The introduction of the notion of multi-levelled representations, as well as the recognition of constituent structure organisation in phonology, has allowed for a shift from mainly segment-internal, paradigmatic considerations to the study of syntagmatic relations holding between phonological units. What is now required is nothing less than a syntax of phonological expressions.

TL;DR: In this paper, four studies were conducted with a French-Canadian junior college student population in order to verify the internal consistency and the unidimensional factorial structure of the scale.
Abstract: Since the early days of psychology, the self-concept and more specifically global self-esteem has been addresscd by numerous researchers in the field. Among the widely used instruments for measuring global self-esteem, Rosenberg's Self-Esteem scale (RSE) has displayed high levels of validity and reliability (Harter 1983; Wylie 1974). Through a brief (10 items) and direct approach, the RSE can be answered quickly by different age and social groups. Considering the good psychometric properties of the RSE mentioned above, and the importance of self-esteem for research in psychology, the purpose of the present four studies was to translate and validate in French the RSE Internal consistency (study 1) and confirmatory factor analyses through LISREL VI (study 2) were conducted with a French-Canadian junior college student population in order to verify the internal consistency and the unidimensional factorial structure of the scale. In addition, the construct validity (study 3) and temporal stability (s...

TL;DR: The physical environment of 120 girls and boys was compared in order to study the emergence of gender differences in infancy as discussed by the authors, and the results showed that boys were provided with more sports equipment, tools, and large and small vehicles, while girls had more dolls, fictional characters, child's furniture, and other toys for manipulation.
Abstract: The physical environment of 120 girls and boys was compared in order to study the emergence of gender differences in infancy. Three age groups were investigated, 5, 13, and 25 months, with 40 children in each group. The quantity and types of toys, the colors and types of clothing, and the colors and motifs of the children's room were noted on a checklist by an observer who visited their homes. The results showed that boys were provided with more sports equipment, tools, and large and small vehicles. Girls had more dolls, fictional characters, child's furniture, and other toys for manipulation. They wore pink and multicolored clothes more often, had more pink pacifiers and jewelry. Boys wore more blue, red and white clothing. They had more blue pacifiers. Yellow bedding was more frequently observed in the girls' rooms, while blue bedding and curtains were more prevalent in the boys' rooms. Women were the predominant providers of toys for children. It thus seems that, nowadays, very early in their development, girls and boys already experience environments which are dissimilar. We may hypothesize that these differential environments will have an impact on the development of specific abilities and preferential activities in children.

Abstract: The semi-implicit algorithm, originally developed by Robert for an economical integration of the primitive equations in large-scale models of the atmospheric, is here generalized in order to integrate the fully compressible, nonhydrostatic equations. We show that there is little computational overhead associated with the integration of the full, and hence presumably more correct, set of equations that do not invoke the hydrostatic assumption to exclude the high frequency, vertically propagating acoustic modes.

TL;DR: This work proposes a class of models which has the form of a two-echelon multimode multicommodity location formulation with interdepot balancing requirements and analyses the models and their properties to determine their underlying structure and characteristics to be used in subsequent algorithmic developments.
Abstract: We present the problem of locating vehicle depots in an intercity freight transportation system with the objective of satisfying client demand for empty vehicles, while minimizing depot opening and operating costs, bidirectional client-depot transportation costs, as well as the costs of the interdepot movements necessary to counter the unbalancing of demand. We propose a class of models which has the form of a two-echelon multimode multicommodity location formulation with interdepot balancing requirements. We analyse the models and their properties to determine their underlying structure and characteristics to be used in subsequent algorithmic developments.

TL;DR: Paleohydrology and paleoecology of the region around the Chemchane sabkha (Mauritania) are reconstructed from comparative analyses of mineralogy, stable isotope ratios of bulk carbonates, and palynology from sediment cores as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Paleohydrology and paleoecology of the region around the Chemchane sabkha (Mauritania) are reconstructed from the comparative analyses of mineralogy, stable isotope ratios of bulk carbonates, and palynology from sediment cores. The age of the section is from ca. 13.5 ka to the middle Holocene. Maximum lake expansion between about 8.3 and 6.5 ka is recorded in a girdle of stromatolite carbonates. These document a lower-salinity lake concomitant with a general establishment of Sahel-Sudan vegetation. The Chemchane area is the northernmost (lat 21°N) occurrence of humid- phase elements that are related to maximum intensity of monsoon activity during the early Holocene.

TL;DR: The first North American study to show the combined effects of domestic work and paid work on physical health symptoms among women and among couples with children is shown.
Abstract: Hospital workers completed a questionnaire on domestic and professional working conditions and health symptoms. Workers were asked to estimate the number of domestic work hours, and the degree of sharing of laundry, cleaning, meal preparation and childcare. Responses from the 532 women workers showed an average professional work week of 31.2 hours and an average domestic work week of 19.2 hours. The length of the domestic work week increased with the number of children, and the degree of sharing diminished. Among couples with children, the reported length of the domestic work week correlated highly with an index calculated from the degree of sharing of domestic tasks, and the number and ages of children. Exhaustion and insomnia were associated with work speed and shift work, respectively, at the hospital job, but also with the number of hours of domestic work. Backache, which was related to lifting weights in the workplace, was not associated with the number of reported hours of domestic work. Due to errors in formulating some questions, the study underestimates total hours of domestic work, and, probably, effects of domestic work on health. However, it is the first North American study to show the combined effects of domestic work and paid work on physical health symptoms among women.

TL;DR: It is found that the proposed configuration of the high‐resolution, nested grid‐point model is able to produce very accurate integrations over a small region.
Abstract: Some experiments are carried out with a nesting strategy that is free of numerical problems near the lateral boundaries of the driven regional forecast model. As a first step, the high‐resolution, nested grid‐point model is compared with a high‐resolution, global spectral model in order to show that the differences are small over the region of interest. Subsequently, some intercomparison experiments are made with two versions of the nested model. These additional tests are used to determine the most efficient nesting configuration that will give the desired level of accuracy. It is found that the proposed configuration is able to produce very accurate integrations over a small region.

TL;DR: A blend of amorphous polyester cationic exchangers dispersed in water has been used for the immobilization of l-amino acid, choline, galactose or glucose oxidase enzymes at the surface of a platinum electrode to dissolve the enzyme without any significative loss of enzymatic activity.
Abstract: A fast and simple procedure to prepare enzyme electrode is presented herein. A blend of amorphous polyester cationic exchangers (AQ 29D:AQ 55D; ratio 1:1) dispersed in water has been used for the immobilization of l-amino acid, choline, galactose or glucose oxidase enzymes at the surface of a platinum electrode. The resulting polymer-enzyme film was covered by a thin layer of Nafion to avoid its subsequent dissolution in water. The assays are based on the electrochemical detection of enzymatically generated hydrogen peroxide. Good amperometric responses were obtained with each of these enzyme electrodes. The major advantage in using this water dispersed polymer lies in its ability to dissolve the enzyme without any significative loss of enzymatic activity.

TL;DR: In this article, the dates are interpreted to reflect peak granulite conditions during an Archean metamorphic event having a minimum age of 2.65 Ga. The gneiss was derived from preexisting crustal precursors and was barely affected by the Grenvillian event.
Abstract: Pb-isotope ratios of high-grade metamorphic minerals such as K-feldspar, biotite, magnetite, apatite, sillimanite, and garnet define collinear arrays on {sup 207}Pb/{sup 204}Pb vs. {sup 206}Pb/{sup 204}Pb diagrams. The samples are from a zone extending 35 km southeast of the Grenville front; the dates are interpreted to reflect peak granulite conditions during an Archean metamorphic event having a minimum age of 2.65 Ga. The gneiss was derived from preexisting crustal precursors and was barely affected by the Grenvillian event, a milder perturbation followed by rapid uplift.

TL;DR: This paper analyzed expert testimony from a patent dispute involving two California biotechnology companies and found that, while one might expect technical arguments to play a central role in the proceedings, social, historical, economic, or philosophical arguments are coextensive with and constitutive of the technical.
Abstract: This paper analyzes expert testimony from a patent dispute involving two California biotechnology companies. This case provides us with an opportunity to study “science” and “law” as they interact, instead of contrasting them as separate, although parallel, practices. In the court, “science,” which usually bears the marks of objectivity and certainty, appears uncertain and subject to interpretation. Through an examination of the representations made by scientific witnesses during the trial as to the origin, novelty, and non-obviousness of the disputed object of discovery, we show that, while one might expect “technical” arguments to play a central role in the proceedings, “social,” “historical,” “economic,”or “philosophical” arguments are coextensive with and constitutive of the “technical.”

TL;DR: Over the 2-h period of exercise, a greater amount of exogenous F was oxidized in the fasted than in the fed group, which represent 31% and 20% of the total carbohydrate energy supply, respectively.
Abstract: The oxidation of glucose and fructose ingested during moderate exercise performed on a cycle ergometer (120 min, 52% VO2max) was compared in ten young males fasted (n = 5) or fed (n = 5) before exercise The subjects ingested randomly 133 g/kg body weight (approximately 96 +/- 9 g) of either enriched 13C-glucose (G), 13C-fructose (F), or water only (W); the solutions were evenly distributed over the exercise period The fasted subjects began the three exercises with a lower blood glucose (P less than or equal to 005 for F only) and insulin (P less than or equal to 005) levels and a higher free fatty acid (FFA) concentration (P less than or equal to 005) than the fed ones Throughout the exercise period, blood glucose level was maintained in fasted as well as in fed group for G and F ingestions, while it decreased (P less than or equal to 005 at the 100th min in fasted subjects) with water ingestion Insulin level was similar in both fed and fasted conditions with F and W ingestions and lower than G trials for the fed subjects For the three ingestions, FFA was lower (P less than or equal to 005) in the fasted than in the fed group over the exercise period Over the 2-h period of exercise, a greater (P less than or equal to 005) amount of exogenous F was oxidized in the fasted (49 +/- 6 g) than in the fed (36 +/- 5 g) group, which represent 31% and 20% of the total carbohydrate energy supply, respectively(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract: The effect of temperature on the cytotoxicity of melphalan in a pleiotropic drug-resistant mutant CHO cell line (CHR C5) and in its drug-sensitive parent (Aux B1) was studied in vitro using a clonogenic assay The cytotoxicity of melphalan was significantly enhanced at elevated but non-lethal temperatures (39-41 degrees C) and hyperthermia potentiated the effect of melphalan in the lethal temperature range (43-44 degrees C) in both cell lines The effect of temperature on membrane permeability to melphalan was studied to determine whether the increase in cytotoxicity was associated with increased intracellular drug levels The uptake of 14C-labelled melphalan during 5 min increased with increasing temperature Drug efflux, however, also increased at elevated temperatures Intracellular drug levels at equilibrium were increased at elevated temperatures but the magnitude of this effect was small in comparison with the much larger increases in cytotoxicity
