TL;DR: This analysis revealed that the hybrid PSO–ANN model offers a higher degree of accuracy compared to conventional ANN for predicting the Qu of rock-socketed piles, however, the developed model would be most useful in the preliminary stages of pile design and should be used with caution.
Abstract: Rock-socketed piles are commonly used in foundations built in soft ground, and thus, their bearing capacity is a key issue of universal concern in research, design and construction. The accurate prediction of the ultimate bearing capacity (Qu) of rock-socketed piles is a difficult task due to the uncertainty surrounding the various factors that affect this capacity. This study was aimed at developing an artificial neural network (ANN) model, as well as a hybrid model based on both particle swarm optimisation (PSO) and ANN, with which to predict the Qu of rock-socketed piles. PSO, a powerful population-based algorithm used in solving continuous and discrete optimisation problems, was here employed as a robust global search algorithm to determine ANN weights and biases and thereby improve model performance. To achieve the study aims, 132 piles socketed in various rock types as part of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project, Malaysia, were investigated. Based on previous related investigations, parameters with the most influence on Qu were identified and utilised in the modelling procedure of the intelligent systems. After constructing and modelling these systems, selected performance indices including the coefficient of determination (R2), root-mean-square error, variance account for and total ranking were used to identify the best models and compare the obtained results. This analysis revealed that the hybrid PSO---ANN model offers a higher degree of accuracy compared to conventional ANN for predicting the Qu of rock-socketed piles. However, the developed model would be most useful in the preliminary stages of pile design and should be used with caution.

TL;DR: A suitable expert fuzzy rule-based system for evaluation was developed in this study using Visual Basic.Net and the resulting performance measurement system was evaluated using a case study company from the automotive industry.
Abstract: Closed-loop supply chain management has been identified as an efficient, effective and economical strategy towards environmental sustainable practices in manufacturing companies. Without a formidable closed-loop supply chain to complement green supply chain management, most of the goals will not be achieved. A performance evaluation system is crucial for achieving a successful closed-loop supply chain in the automotive industry. Hence, a suitable expert fuzzy rule-based system for evaluation was developed in this study using Visual Basic.Net. The fuzzy rules and arithmetic used were described. The resulting performance measurement system was evaluated using a case study company from the automotive industry. The study culminated with recommendations and proposal of directions for future studies.

TL;DR: In this paper, different challenges and applicable solutions for efficient and economical conversion of greenhouse gases to renewable fuels are discussed and the roles of key parameters such as types of reductant, reduction potential, pH of mixture, metal-loaded and supported catalyst on hydrocarbon yield and selectivity are also investigated.
Abstract: Energy crisis and threats of global warming has accelerated the thrust for new renewable energy resources. Recycling greenhouse gases seems eminently potential to produce sustainable fuels as well as to reduce carbon emission. Various possibilities for implementing low carbon economy drive by practicing phototechnology are reviewed in this paper. In particular, different challenges and applicable solutions for efficient and economical conversion of greenhouse gases to renewable fuels are discussed. The roles of key parameters such as types of reductant, reduction potential, pH of mixture, metal-loaded and supported catalyst on hydrocarbon yield and selectivity are also investigated. Various types of photoreactors and different challenges in the design are also elaborated. It was obvious that modification of semiconductor photocatalyst, optimum operating parameters and suitable photoreactor design are pertinent for efficient CO 2 reduction to sustainable hydrocarbon fuels. In view of the current scenario, there are ample opportunities for producing renewable fuels and establishing a sustainable carbon neutral cycle using phototechnology.
