Abstract: The social media have infiltrated the 21st century generations of Internet users, making it a very active means of communications, particularly among students of higher institutions of education. Consequently, academic activities in institutions and faculties are increasingly carried out through the social networks, such as Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn. These are essentially used in order to connect with current and prospective students and also to deliver instructional content. Questions arise about the impact of social media on academic performance and the possibility of using them as an effective pedagogical tool to improvement academic performance. A pilot study of undergraduate and postgraduate students at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) was carried out to obtain preliminary results of usage of social media currently. Results obtained show that social media affects positively and significantly collaborative learning with interaction with peers, interaction with supervisor, engagement, perceived ease of use, and perceived usefulness.

Abstract: The primary means of immobilizing enzymes are to boost the enzyme productivity and operational stability, alongside facilitating the reuse of enzymes. Notwithstanding the aforementioned benefits, enzyme immobilization promotes high catalytic activity and stability, convenient handling of enzymes, in addition to their facile separation from reaction mixtures without contaminating the products. This review describes the choices of support materials and cross-linkers together with several mechanisms that influence the performance, stabilization and hyperactivation of immobilized enzymes. Altering enzyme properties often changes the enzyme structure due to random modifications in the behavior, which in some cases can be positive or negative. Future strategy to develop new generations of immobilized enzymes should capitalize on the rapid advances of genetic manipulation, organic chemistry, computational chemistry and bioinformatics, reactor and reaction design. Upcoming efforts to improve enzymes as industrial biocatalysts must consider their development for increased selective promiscuity suitable for multiple biotransformations, either independently or as catalytic cascade processes thereby enhance the cost-effectiveness of the processes.

Abstract: Wind Energy is a fast developing source of energy since 1996. Despite its advantages, this energy could never be a primary source of electric power to be integrated into the grid even in high wind areas, such as Great Plains, due to its intermittent behaviour. This intermittency will generate intermittent power to grid, which leads to instability, unreliability and power quality problem onto the grid system. One of the widely accepted methods to overcome this problem is by coupling the wind turbine with the energy storage system. This paper reviews the ability of four different types of the energy storage system to mitigate the power fluctuated into the grid, especially during low wind speed. This paper also explains the operating principles and the different methods of charging and discharging the energy storage. The ability of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) in dealing with variable wind speed also will be discussed.

Abstract: The most prominent challenge in 21th century is global warming which seriously threats the mankind. Building sector with 40% of global energy consumption and GHG emission play a key role in this threat. In this regard, the impact of cooling systems cannot be ignored where along with ventilation and heating systems totally account for 60% of energy consumed in buildings. Passive cooling systems can be a promising alternative to reduce energy consumption. One of the oldest passive cooling system that is still being used today is windcatcher. By manipulating pressure differences and the buoyancy effect, an adequate level of ventilation in buildings can be provided by windcatchers. Since most of the previous windcatcher studies assessed the design characteristics, the current investigation focused on the indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort aspects. The review details and compares the different theoretical and experimental methods employed by researchers in different case studies to assess the IAQ and thermal comfort. It was found that most IAQ studies were conducted in the UK using CFD and experimental techniques. Previous studies assessed IAQ based on several parameters such as air flow rate, air change rate, CO2 concentration, air change effectiveness and mean age of air. The findings of the studies revealed that satisfactory IAQ were generally achieved using the windcatcher. On the other hand, thermal comfort studies of windcatchers were mainly conducted in hot climates such as in the Middle East. In addition to night ventilation, the review also looked into the different types of cooling methods incorporated with windcatchers such as evaporative cooling, earth to air heat exchangers (EAHE) and heat transfer devices (HTD). Night ventilation was found to be effective in temperate and cold conditions while additional cooling using evaporative cooling, EAHE and HTD were found to be necessary in hot climates.
