Abstract: Demographic change, dramatic population increase and rapid industrial growth are major trends emerging in Malaysia Climate change and depletion of fossil fuel along with the rise in petroleum prices have forced the Malaysian Government to rethink strategies to be more in line with other developed countries including the decision to embark on renewable energy (RE) resources as a better source of energy amongst the global energy mix The Malaysian Government is making frantic efforts to make policies, RE programmes and incentives more effective so as to promote and develop the use of RE Malaysia is rich with fossil fuel but these are fast depleting Although RE is necessary, current RE resources are still not enough Therefore, exploration into other resources must be considered in order to meet future energy demands The objective of this paper is to identify the potential of available renewable energy resources in Malaysia as well as the country׳s current implementation strategies This paper also discusses the different RE policies in Malaysia In order to determine the potential of RE, various sources and published materials in conferences, international journals and information released by relevant government bodies and miscellaneous resources are used This research has revealed that among all the renewable energy sources that are present in Malaysia, biomass and solar energy are the most prospective ones Plus, renewable energy (RE) sources are quite advantageous as they are free from greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and related global warming effects They can also be applied in off-grid electricity generation for rural communities

Abstract: Occupational health studies the interaction of work and health, especially the long-term effect of chemicals to health. In this paper an Inherent Occupational Health Index has been developed for assessing the health risks of process routes during process research and development stage. The method takes into account both the hazard from the chemicals present and the potential for the exposure of workers to the chemicals. The index can be used either for determining the level of inherent occupational health hazards or comparing alternative process routes for these risks. The method is tailored for the process research and development stage by including only such properties of chemicals and operating conditions of process, which are available already in this early stage. In the end of this paper the approach is demonstrated by comparing the inherent occupational healthiness of six methyl methacrylate process routes using three different types of index calculations; additive-type, average-type, and worst case-type. The study discloses that the average- and worst case-based approaches analyze the characteristics of a route better than the additive calculation, which is greatly affected by the number of steps in the route. A quantitative standard scale for the index is also developed to allow health level assessment of a single process.

Abstract: In this study, a zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF-8) was prepared, and physico-chemical characterizations were performed to investigate the influences of triethylamine (TEA) on the crystallinity, particle size, morphology, and defects of ZIF-8 synthesized via an aqueous room temperature approach with a relatively low molar ratio of ligands to metal salts. Increasing the concentration of TEA by raising the TEA/total molar ratio from 0.004 to 0.007 prompted the formation of pure phase ZIF-8, whereas a TEA/total molar ratio below 0.004 did not result in a yield of ZIF-8. The particle size of ZIF-8 decreased from approximately 288 to 133 nm with increasing TEA/total molar ratio, except at a TEA/total molar ratio of 0.007. However, an excessive TEA/total molar ratio alters the 2-MeIM chemistry, and partially forms hydroxylated 2-MeIM. Thus, this study shows that at relatively low molar ratios of ligands to metal salts, up to a maximum TEA/total molar ratio of 0.006, the TEA concentration plays an important role in assisting crystal formation and in controlling the particle size of ZIF-8. The proposed procedure enables pure phase nanoscale ZIF-8 to be synthesized with a high product yield and with minimal chemical usage.
