Abstract: A series of Fe/HY zeolite catalysts with different FeCl 3 weight percent (5, 10 and 15%) on HY zeolite have been synthesized in this study. All the catalysts were characterized by XRD, FESEM, N 2 physisorption, FTIR, TGA, NH 3 -TPD and IR-pyridine. The performance of the Fe/HY catalysts was tested in glucose to levulinic acid transformation. The amount and type of acid sites together with surface area and porosity influenced the catalytic activity. The catalyst with a large surface area, high concentration of active acid sites and appropriate ratio of Bronsted to Lewis acids seemed suitable for levulinic acid production. However, catalyst with excess Lewis acidity converted glucose into humins, but samples with high relative mesopority and low relative microporosity gave a decent levulinic acid yield. Among the catalysts tested, 10% Fe/HY catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic performance with 62% yield at 180 °C in 180 min. The reused catalyst exhibited constant activity for five successive runs. The experimental results demonstrated the potential of Fe/HY catalyst for biomass conversion to levulinic acid under mild process conditions.

Abstract: The Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) utility determining approaches and fuzzy sets are considered to be new development approaches, which have been recently presented, extended, and used by some scholars in area of decision making. There is a lack of research regarding to systematic literature review and classification of study about these approaches. Therefore; in the present study, the attempt is made to present a systematic review of methodologies and applications with recent fuzzy developments of two new MCDM utility determining approaches including Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) and the Weighted Aggregated Sum Product Assessment (WASPAS) and fuzzy extensions which discussed in recent years. Regarding this, some major databases including Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar have been nominated and systematic and meta-analysis method which called “PRISMA” has been proposed. In addition, the selected articles were classified based on authors, the year of publication, journals and conferences names, the technique and method used, research objectives, research gap and problem, solution and modeling, and finally results and findings. The results of this study can assist decision-makers in handling information such as stakeholders’ preferences, interconnected or contradictory criteria and uncertain environments. In addition, findings of this study help to practitioners and academic for adopting the new MCDM utility techniques such as WASPAS and SWARA in different application areas and presenting insight into literature.

Abstract: The free radical scavenging activity and reducing power of 16 phenolic compounds including four hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives namely ferulic acid, caffeic acid, sinapic acid and p-coumaric acid, benzoic acid and its derivatives namely protocatechuic acid, gallic acid and vanillic acid, benzene derivatives namely vanillin, vanillyl alcohol, veratryl alcohol, veratraldehyde, pyrogallol, guaiacol and two synthetic antioxidants, butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA) and propyl gallate were evaluated using 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH•), 2,2′-Azinobis-3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical (ABTS+•), Hydroxyl radical (•OH) and Superoxide radical (O2 •-) scavenging assays and reduction potential assay. By virtue of their hydrogen donating ability, phenolic compounds with multiple hydroxyl groups such as protocatechuic acid, pyrogallol, caffeic acid, gallic acid and propyl gallate exhibited higher free radical scavenging activity especially against DPPH• and O2 •-. The hydroxylated cinnamates such as ferulic acid and caffeic acid were in general better scavengers than their benzoic acid counter parts such as vanillic acid and protocatechuic acid. All the phenolic compounds tested exhibited more than 85 % scavenging due to the high reactivity of the hydroxyl radical. Phenolic compounds with multiple hydroxyl groups also exhibited high redox potential. Exploring the radical scavenging and reducing properties of antioxidants especially those which are found naturally in plant sources are of great interest due to their protective roles in biological systems.

Abstract: Polydopamine modified halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were synthesised through a one step facile procedure and employed as a well dispersed hydrophilic additive to enhance the filtration properties of polyetherimide (PEI) membranes. The nanocomposite membranes were prepared by an immersion precipitation method with different amounts of modified HNTs (MHNTs) in the casting solution. The good dispersion of MHNTs throughout the membrane matrix was confirmed by elemental mapping analysis. The prepared nanocomposite membranes were extensively studied in terms of their porosity, morphology, membrane hydraulic resistance and hydrophilicity. The permeation experiments showed that the modified membranes exhibited higher water flux than a pristine PEI membrane. The antifouling and anti-biofouling behaviour of the modified membranes was investigated in detail. The results revealed that a membrane with a 3 wt% MHNT dosage showed a higher Fouling Resistance Ratio (FRR) of 74.5% with reversible membrane fouling of 64.3%. Moreover, the membrane showed excellent resistance to microbial growth on the membrane surface. The well performing membrane was subjected to heavy metal ion rejection. Results indicated that membranes had the capacity to adsorb Pb2+ and Cd2+. Overall, PEI–MHNTs nanocomposite membranes could have great potential to improve antifouling, anti-biofouling and filtration properties.
