TL;DR: In this paper, the authors illustrate the propagation of combustion in vortex rings formed of premixed propane and air (or oxygen) and measure the mean flame propagation speed and the vortex strength indicate that over the range of strengths used in the equipment the relationship is approximately linear.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electronic, ESR and i.r. spectra of a series of Cu(en) 1 X 2, z H 2 O and Cu(bipy), where X involves various anions, are reported and the local molecular structures of the copper(II) ions present in the different complexes are tentatively predicted.

TL;DR: Studies on pituitary and ovarian function as assessed by the urinary output of total gonadotrophic activity, the three classical oestrogens, pregnanediol and, in some cases, testosterone and epitestosterone, were conducted in eight patients suffering from premenstrual tension.
Abstract: SUMMARY Studies on pituitary and ovarian function as assessed by the urinary output of total gonadotrophic activity, the three classical oestrogens, pregnanediol and, in some cases, testosterone and epitestosterone, were conducted in eight patients suffering from premenstrual tension. Major abnormalities in endocrine function were not a feature of the condition. Ovulation, as judged by pregnanediol assays, was absent in seven out of the fifteen cycles investigated. Contrary to traditional belief, the symptoms of premenstrual tension could exist in the presence of cycles with anovulatory hormonal patterns.

TL;DR: The findings with alpha blocking agents, reserpine, guanethidine, hexamethonium and atropine suggest that these nerves are post-ganglionic sympathetic noradrenergic fibres, and may be a useful model for further studies on the innervation of venous smooth muscle.
Abstract: MONITORING the perfusing pressure, with constant flow perfusion, and isometric recording of longitudinal tension, the responses of the circular and longitudinal muscle in the wall of the dog anterior mesenteric vein to transmural electrical stimulation were recorded simultaneously. It was concluded from the results with tetrodotoxin and the local anaesthetic agents, cocaine and lignocaine, that the contractions were due to the excitation of nerves. The findings with alpha blocking agents, reserpine, guanethidine, hexamethonium and atropine, suggest that these nerves are post-ganglionic sympathetic noradrenergic fibres. This preparation may be a useful model for further studies on the innervation of venous smooth muscle.

TL;DR: The effects of localized herbicide placement at different internodes of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) shoots below the soil surface after plant emergence were studied by removing the soil from around the shoots and replacing with herbicide-treated soil.
Abstract: Summary. The effects of localized herbicide placement at different internodes of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) shoots below the soil surface after plant emergence were studied by removing the soil from around the shoots and replacing with herbicide-treated soil. The first internode proved insensitive to linuron, diuron, atrazine and simazine at 4·5 kg/ha, while treatment of the second and third internodes markedly reduced plant growth 4–6 days after treatment. Separate exposure of the first internode alone, and the second and part of the third together to 14C-labelled atrazine indicated no difference in herbicide metabolism. However, a two- to threefold increase in 14C uptake and movement to the foliar parts occurred when the second and part of the third internode was treated, as compared to first internode treatment. Thus the differential sensitivity of the internodes to atrazine, and possibly to the other herbicides, may be because the more mature first internode allows less uptake and subsequent movement to the foliar parts.

TL;DR: In this paper, the electronic absorption spectra of saturated solutions of metal nitrites in DMF show evidence in the near UV for anion perturbation via ion association, but flash photolysis studies identify NO2 as an earlier intermediate formed from ionization of NO−2*(T1).

TL;DR: There are numerous references to clothes in Galdos' novels, both as a means of characterization through description of external appearances and as a social phenomenon of the historical period in which the author lived as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: There are numerous references to clothes in Galdos' novels, both as a means of characterization through description of external appearances and as a social phenomenon of the historical period in which the author lived. More often than not, Galdos' references to clothes worn by a particular character combine these two functions, as, for instance, in the case of Rosalia Bringas, whose passion for ostentatious forms of dress leads eventually to her downfall. While her attitude to clothes draws attention to a basic weakness in her character, at the same time this individual preoccupation with external appearances also helps to reveal a widespread social vice of the time. In a later novel, Fortunata y Jacinta, Galdos makes a more explicit comment on the social function of clothing, summing up his vision of contemporary society with a combination of serious comment and wry irony.
