TL;DR: The authors' studies have been devoted mainly to patterns obtained in a variety of diseases involving the hepatobiliary and skeletal systems, such as differential therm~stabili ty,~,~ differential urea inactivation68 and phenylalanine inh ib i t i~n .~
Abstract: Our interest in alkaline phosphatase studies started in 1964 when we were using gel filtration techniques for many collateral studies. We studied serum in patients with various types of liver disease, and noted that an enzyme was present that was excluded from Sephadex G-200, i.e., it eluted mainly with the macroglobulins.l.2 This suggested an enzyme of unusual size? and prompted our subsequent investigations. During this time, other methods of identifying patterns have been described, and we have used some of them, such as differential therm~stabili ty,~,~ differential urea inactivation68 and phenylalanine inh ib i t i~n .~ Our studies have been devoted mainly to patterns obtained in a variety of diseases involving the hepatobiliary and skeletal systems.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reported the detection of EAS at frequencies between 200 MHz and 520 MHz using a private communication from W. N. Charman and J. V. Jelley.
Abstract: RADIO pulses associated with extensive air showers (EAS) have been detected in numerous experiments1–12, at frequencies between 3 MHz and 75 MHz. None of the available emission theories13–16 would predict a detectable radio signal from EAS at frequencies above 100 MHz, but three recent experiments (refs. 17 and 18 and a private communication from W. N. Charman and J. V. Jelley) report the detection of pulses at frequencies between 200 MHz and 520 MHz.

TL;DR: A study of two groups of diabetic sera with reference to total insulin binding capacity and preferential binding of beef and pork insulin has been carried out and the possible significance of the results is discussed.
Abstract: A study of two groups of diabetic sera has been carried out with reference to total insulin binding capacity and preferential binding of beef and pork insulin. Group I (25 patients) received insulin containing pre-dominantly beef insulin with a beef/pork ratio of 3∶1 approximately; Group II (13 patients) received insulin containing at least 97% pork insulin. In Group I the mean total insulin binding capacity was 15.38U/litre and in 21 beef insulin was preferentially bound with reference to pork insulin. Group II was divided into two subgroups: group IIa, 7 patients, the sera bound beef > pork, and the mean insulin binding capacity was 8 U/l. Group IIb, 6 patients, the sera bound pork > beef or showed no preference, and the mean insulin binding capacity was 3.1 U/l. The mean insulin dose in Group IIa was 34.8 and in Group IIb was 24. The mean insulin binding capacity and mean insulin dose were significantly different (P < 0.05) between Group IIa and Group IIb. The possible significance of the results is discussed.

TL;DR: Dietary deficiencies in potassium and/or magnesium were reflected by decreased ascitic fluid levels of these elements and in both control and deficient groups the presence of tumour led to an increase in host muscle water.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the result of applying Krylov's algorithm to the matrices A and B related by A = (B + I)(B - I)^{-1) is row equivalent.
Abstract: Matrices W i and N_{i}, which result from application of Krylov's algorithm to the matrices A and B related by A = (B + I)(B - I)^{-1}, are shown to be row equivalent, i.e., N_{i} = M_{i}W_{1} . This result is applied to solution of the Lyapunov matrix equation for discrete-time systems, A'LA - L = -K .

TL;DR: In this article, a canonical form for real nonderogatory convergent matrices, such as the A matrices which occur in the description of linear discrete-time dynamical systems by vector-matrix difference equations of the form xk+1 = Axk + Buk, is proposed.
Abstract: Some applications of canonical matrices to linear continuous-time systems are reviewed. A canonical form is proposed for real nonderogatory convergent matrices, such as the A matrices which occur in the description of linear discrete-time dynamical systems by vector-matrix difference equations of the form xk+1 = Axk + Buk. The new canonical form is applied to the generation of particular and general solutions of the matrix equation ATLA − L = −K, which occurs in the application of Lyapunov theory to the analysis and design of such systems.

TL;DR: Rat skeletal muscle depleted of potassium has a slower rate of restoration when extracellular magnesium is reduced, and concomitant magnesium deficiency may retard restoration of potassium in depleted patients.
Abstract: Rat skeletal muscle depleted of potassium has a slower rate of restoration when extracellular magnesium is reduced. Concomitant magnesium deficiency may retard restoration of potassium in depleted patients if the magnesium deficiency is not simultaneously corrected.

TL;DR: An algebraic approximation theorem for root-locus plots is given in this article, which enables the topology of root-locations to be established by grouping poles and zeros into regions R1 and R2 so that, for points s1 in R1, s2 in R2, |s1| ≪ |s2|.

Abstract: Krylov's algorithm is used to unify and extend recent work on relating a matrix to its companion form and the companion matrix to the Schwarz form. A general solution to the "inverse problem of stability" is presented and illustrated.

Abstract: Some experimental data concerning the production of hypernuclei from the interactions of 10.1 GeV/c momentum K−-mesons with emulsion nuclei are presented. The production frequency of observed hypernuclei is found to be (1.19±0.06)%. The production characteristics are compared with those at lower K− momenta.

TL;DR: Calculated levels of Nicotinic acid indicate that inhibitory levels of the drug could arise in the intestine during therapy causing the hyperuricaemia observed during administration of this drug.
Abstract: Nicotinic acid, a drug which produces hyperuricaemia has been shown to be an inhibitor of uricase, the bacterial enzyme responsible for the elimination of a considerable portion of the body’s uric acid. Calculations indicate that inhibitory levels of the drug could arise in the intestine during therapy causing the hyperuricaemia observed during administration of this drug.
