Abstract: This chapter shows how a system can recommend to a group of users by aggregating information from individual user models and modelling the users affective state. It summarizes results from previous research in this area. It also shows how group recommendation techniques can be applied when recommending to individuals, in particular for solving the cold-start problem and dealing with multiple criteria.

Abstract: The statistical aggregation of parasites among hosts is often described empirically by the negative binomial (Poisson-gamma) distribution. Alternatively, the Poisson-lognormal model can be used. This has the advantage that it can be fitted as a generalized linear mixed model, thereby quantifying the sources of aggregation in terms of both fixed and random effects. We give a worked example, assigning aggregation in the distribution of sheep ticks Ixodes ricinus on red grouse Lagopus lagopus scoticus chicks to temporal (year), spatial (altitude and location), brood and individual effects. Apparent aggregation among random individuals in random broods fell 8-fold when spatial and temporal effects had been accounted for.

Abstract: The new International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society lung adenocarcinoma classification provides, for the first time, standardized terminology for lung cancer diagnosis in small biopsies and cytology; this was not primarily addressed by previous World Health Organization classifications. Until recently there have been no therapeutic implications to further classification of NSCLC, so little attention has been given to the distinction of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma in small tissue samples. This situation has changed dramatically in recent years with the discovery of several therapeutic options that are available only to patients with adenocarcinoma or NSCLC, not otherwise specified, rather than squamous cell carcinoma. This includes recommendation for use of special stains as an aid to diagnosis, particularly in the setting of poorly differentiated tumors that do not show clear differentiation by routine light microscopy. Abstract: The electrical conductivity of rocks results from conduction through the bulk solution occupying the pores and from surface conduction occurring at the fluid/grain interface. The nature of the surface electrical conductivity of shaly and clean sands and sandstones is examined. Surface conduction is characterized by the specific surface conductance which is the sum of three contributions: (i) Conduction within the electrical diffuse layer, which makes a negligible contribution to the total specific surface conductance, (ii) Conduction in the Stern layer, which is shown to vary significantly with the salinity of the pore fluid at low salinities (10−6 to 10−3 mol 1−1), but becomes independent of salinity at higher salinities, (iii) A mechanism operating directly on the mineral surface, independent of salinity, and perhaps associated with proton transfer. At salinities higher than 10−3 mol 1−1 and at 25°C, the specific surface conductance of quartz and clays is equal to 8.9×10−9 S and 2.5×10−9 S respectively. Equations describing the influence of surface conductivity and microstructure upon the macroscopic electrical conductivity of sands, sandstones, and shales are also developed.
