Abstract: A complex hydroxide/metal Ni(OH)2@Ni core–shell electrode was developed for a high-performance and flexible pseudocapacitor. Compared to the conventional Ni(OH)2 electrode, the as-prepared amorphous Ni(OH)2@ three-dimensional (3D) Ni core–shell electrode shows a large specific capacitance of 2868 F g−1 at a scan rate of 1 mV s−1 and a good cycling stability (3% degradation after 1000 cycles) at a scan rate of 100 mV s−1. Furthermore, the high rate capability with a specific capacitance of 2454 F g−1 can be achieved at a charge–discharge current density of 5 A g−1. An amorphous Ni(OH)2@3D Ni-AC based asymmetric supercapacitor could be cycled reversibly in the high-voltage region of 0–1.3 V, and the specific capacitance of 92.8 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. This research demonstrates that introduction of a metal core to conventional hydroxide supercapacitor electrodes could open up new opportunities for designing and developing high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract: In families with nonsyndromic X-linked mental retardation (NS-XLMR), >30% of mutations seem to cluster on proximal Xp and in the pericentric region. In a systematic screen of brain-expressed genes from this region in 210 families with XLMR, we identified seven different mutations in JARID1C, including one frameshift mutation and two nonsense mutations that introduce premature stop codons, as well as four missense mutations that alter evolutionarily conserved amino acids. In two of these families, expression studies revealed the almost complete absence of the mutated JARID1C transcript, suggesting that the phenotype in these families results from functional loss of the JARID1C protein. JARID1C (Jumonji AT-rich interactive domain 1C), formerly known as "SMCX," is highly similar to the Y-chromosomal gene JARID1D/SMCY, which encodes the H-Y antigen. The JARID1C protein belongs to the highly conserved ARID protein family. It contains several DNA-binding motifs that link it to transcriptional regulation and chromatin remodeling, processes that are defective in various other forms of mental retardation. Our results suggest that JARID1C mutations are a relatively common cause of XLMR and that this gene might play an important role in human brain function.

Abstract: During the last decade microsatellites or SSRs (simple sequence repeats) have been proven to be the markers of choice in plant genetics research and for breeding purposes because of their hypervariability and ease of detection. However, development of these markers is expensive, labour intensive and time consuming, in particular, if they are being developed from genomic libraries. In the context of large-scale sequencing and genomics programmes in various cereal species at different laboratories, a large set of expressed sequence tags (ESTs) is being generated, which can be used to search for microsatellites. Keeping in view the importance of such type of SSRs, available ESTs of some cereal species like barley, maize, oats, rice, rye and wheat were investigated for a study of abundance, frequency and distribution of various types of microsatellites. SSRs were present in about 7% to 10% of the total ESTs in the investigated cereal genomes. On the basis of surveying EST sequences amounting to 75.2 Mb in barley, 54.7 Mb in maize, 43.9 Mb in rice, 3.7 Mb in rye, 41.6 Mb in sorghum and 37.5 Mb in wheat, the frequency of SSRs was 1/7.5 kb in barley, 1/7.5 kb in maize, 1/6.2 kb in wheat, 1/5.5 kb in rye and sorghum and 1/3.9 kb in rice. The overall average SSR frequency for these species is 1/6.0 kb. Trimeric repeats are the most abundant (54% to 78%) class of microsatellit es followed by dimeric repeats (17% to 40%). Among the trimeric repeats the motifs CCG are the most common in all the cases ranging from 32% in wheat to 49% in sorghum. When all these SSRs were analysed for assessing their potential to develop new markers, unique primer pairs could be designed for 30% to 70% of the total non-redundant microsatellites which are up to 3% of total ESTs in the studied species.

Abstract: Studies on the effect of light exposure on specific phenolic compounds of berries from Shiraz vines grown in a hot climate are reported. Berries that had developed on bunches receiving high levels of ambient light generally had the highest relative levels of quercetin-3-glucoside and a lower proportion of their malvidin anthocyanins as the coumarate derivative, compared to berries that had developed on bunches in shaded canopy conditions. The response of total anthocyanin levels to treatment conditions was variable and depended on the degree of bunch shading and the resultant berry temperature. It appears that a high degree of bunch exposure in hot climates is not conducive to optimal anthocyanin accumulation in berries. The interactive effects of light and temperature on berry phenolic content and concentration are discussed.
