Abstract: A data set spanning a period of 10 years and obtained from a combination of satellite remote sensing and model predictions is used to construct a global climatology of ocean wind and wave conditions. Results are presented for: significant wave height, peak and mean wave period and wave direction as well as wind speed and direction. The results are presented in terms of mean monthly statistics. The processed data set provides global resolution of 2°. The climatology clearly shows the zonal variation in both wind speed and wave height, with extreme conditions occurring at high latitudes. The important role played by the intense wave generation systems of the Southern Ocean is clear. Swell generated from storms in the Southern Ocean penetrates throughout the Indian, South Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans. During the Southern Hemisphere winter, this swell even penetrates into the North Pacific. The results confirm visual observations that the Southern Ocean is consistently the roughest ocean on earth. It is shown, however, that this is mainly caused by consistent high wind speeds, rather than the extended westerly fetch which exists. The west coasts of most continents have noticeably rougher wave climates than their respective east coasts, as a result of the longer generation fetches which exist on the west coasts. Abstract: Oocyte and embryo metabolism are closely linked with their subsequent developmental capacity. Lipids are a potent source of cellular energy, yet little is known about lipid metabolism during oocyte maturation and early embryo development. Generation of ATP from lipids occurs within mitochondria via beta-oxidation of fatty acids, with the rate-limiting step catalyzed by carnitine palmitoyl transferase I (CPT1B), a process also requiring carnitine. We sought to investigate the regulation and role of beta-oxidation during oocyte maturation and preimplantation development. Expression of Cpt1b mRNA, assessed by real-time RT-PCR in murine cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs), increased following hormonal induction of oocyte maturation and ovulation in vivo with human chorionic gonadotropin (5 IU) and in embryos reaching the blastocyst stage. Beta-oxidation, measured by the production of (3)H(2)O from [(3)H]palmitic acid, was significantly increased over that in immature COCs following induction of maturation in vitro with epidermal growth factor (3 ng/ml) and follicle-stimulating hormone (50 mIU/ml). The importance of lipid metabolism for oocyte developmental competence and early embryo development was demonstrated by assessing the rate of embryo development following inhibition or upregulation of beta-oxidation with etomoxir (an inhibitor of CPT1B) or L-carnitine, respectively. Inhibition of beta-oxidation during oocyte maturation or zygote cleavage impaired subsequent blastocyst development. In contrast, L-carnitine supplementation during oocyte maturation significantly increased beta-oxidation, improved developmental competence, and in the absence of a carbohydrate energy supply, significantly increased 2-cell cleavage. Thus, carnitine is an important cofactor for developing oocytes, and fatty acids are an important energy source for oocyte and embryo development.

Abstract: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have great potential in electrocatalysis. Their performance can be rationally optimized by tailoring the metal atoms, adjacent coordinative dopants, and metal loading. However, doing so is still a great challenge because of the limited synthesis approach and insufficient understanding of the structure-property relationships. Herein, we report a new kind of Mo SAC with a unique O,S coordination and a high metal loading over 10 wt %. The isolation and local environment was identified by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The SACs catalyze the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via a 2 e- pathway with a high H2 O2 selectivity of over 95 % in 0.10 m KOH. The critical role of the Mo single atoms and the coordination structure was revealed by both electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE We evaluated whether a whey preload could slow gastric emptying, stimulate incretin hormones, and attenuate postprandial glycemia in type 2 diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Eight type 2 diabetic patients ingested 350 ml beef soup 30 min before a potato meal; 55 g whey was added to either the soup (whey preload) or potato (whey in meal) or no whey was given. RESULTS Gastric emptying was slowest after the whey preload ( P P P CONCLUSIONS Whey protein consumed before a carbohydrate meal can stimulate insulin and incretin hormone secretion and slow gastric emptying, leading to marked reduction in postprandial glycemia in type 2 diabetes.
