TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the relationship between individual job satisfaction and individual performance using the meta-analysis techniques of Hunter, Schmidt, and Jackson (1982) and found higher and more consistent correlations between overall job satisfaction with performance than those previously reported.
Abstract: The correlational literature concerning the relationships between individual job satisfaction and individual performance was analyzed, using the metaanalysis techniques of Hunter, Schmidt, and Jackson (1982). Higher and more consistent correlations between overall job satisfaction and performance were indicated than those previously reported. Relationships between JDI measures of job satisfaction and performance were not as high or as consistent as those found between overall job satisfaction and performance.

TL;DR: The authors analyzes citation patterns of leading white scholars of civil rights, revealing that those dominant figures, all staunch supporters of minority causes, cited mainly each other and not the growing number of black and Latino scholars who were beginning to write about affirmative action, housing discrimination, and other related areas.
Abstract: An early example of Critical Race Theory, this article analyzes citation patterns of leading white scholars of civil rights. After revealing that those dominant figures, all staunch supporters of minority causes, cited mainly each other and not the growing number of black and Latino scholars who were beginning to write about affirmative action, housing discrimination, and other related areas, I go on to show that this pattern of neglect has real consequences, including "blunting and skewing" in the treatments of race and an impoverished discourse on this vital subject.

TL;DR: The growth of this newly recognized zoonotic agent in cell culture now provides a means of studying its behavior, development, and metabolism, and a mechanism for evaluation of potentially useful therapeutic agents.
Abstract: Protozoan parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium cause a short-term, flu-like, gastrointestinal illness in immunocompetent persons and severe, persistent, life-threatening diarrhea in immunodeficient individuals. No effective therapy is available for the treatment of cryptosporidiosis in the immunodeficient host. Complete development (from sporozoite to sporulated oocyst) of a human isolate of Cryptosporidium was achieved in cultured human fetal lung cells and primary chicken kidney and porcine kidney cells. The growth of this newly recognized zoonotic agent in cell culture now provides a means of studying its behavior, development, and metabolism, and a mechanism for evaluation of potentially useful therapeutic agents.

TL;DR: In this article, the Retarding Ion Mass Spectrometer (RIMS) on the Dynamics Explorer has revealed a supersonic polar wind along polar cap field lines, with a Mach number ranging from 5.1 to 2.6 (with a most likely value of 3).
Abstract: Measurements from the Retarding Ion Mass Spectrometer on the Dynamics Explorer have, for the first time, revealed a supersonic polar wind along polar cap field lines. The observations reported were obtained on the nightside (22:30 to 23:30 MLT) from 65 to 81 deg invariant latitude and at altitudes near 2 earth radii. Fitting the data using a thin-sheath model gives a range of temperatures of 0.1 to 0.2 eV with corresponding flow velocities of 25 to 16 km/s over the estimated range of spacecraft potential of +3 to +5 V. For these values the Mach number ranged from 5.1 to 2.6 (with a most likely value of 3). Characteristics of the H(+) flow are in general agreement with those predicted by 'classical' polar wind theory, but high variabilty of the He(+)/H(+) ratio was observed.

TL;DR: In this article, the spectral and temporal characteristics of the injected flux are inferred through a thick-target model of hard X-ray bremsstrahlung production, and a local temperature peak is seen at a height of approximately 1500 km above the photosphere.
Abstract: A numerical investigation is carried out of the gas dynamical response of the solar atmosphere to a flare energy input in the form of precipitating nonthermal electrons. Rather than discussing the origin of these electrons, the spectral and temporal characteristics of the injected flux are inferred through a thick-target model of hard X-ray bremsstrahlung production. It is assumed that the electrons spiral about preexisting magnetic field lines, making it possible for a one-dimensional spatial treatment to be performed. It is also assumed that all electron energy losses are due to Coulomb collisions with ambient particles; that is, return-current ohmic effects and collective plasma processes are neglected. The results are contrasted with earlier work on conductive heating of the flare atmosphere. A local temperature peak is seen at a height of approximately 1500 km above the photosphere. This derives from a spatial maximum in the energy deposition rate from an electron beam. It is noted that such a feature is not present in conductively heated models. The associated localized region of high pressure drives material both upward and downward.

TL;DR: Treatment of a wide variety of lignocellulosic biomass with gaseous ozone results in greatly enhanced susceptibility to cellulase enzyme hydrolysis and to digestion by rumen microorganisms so that it can be used as ruminant animal feed or for the production of glucose via enzymatic Hydrolysis.
Abstract: Treatment of a wide variety of lignocellulosic biomass with gaseous ozone results in greatly enhanced susceptibility to cellulase enzyme hydrolysis and to digestion by rumen microorganisms so that it can be used as ruminant animal feed or for the production of glucose via enzymatic hydrolysis. By use of appropriate reaction conditions a useful degree of such pretreatment may be obtained in 1-2 h contact time with an ozone consumption of ca. 4-6% of the dry weight of the biomass.

TL;DR: The outer plasmasphere formed and consisted of cold, essentially Maxwellian plasma with ion composition and thermal energy characteristics similar to those of the inner plasmosphere, albeit at significantly lower densities as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Thermal ion composition measurements from several successive dusk sector passes by the DE-1 satellite show the formation of the new outer plasmasphere and double plasmapause following a sharp decrease in geomagnetic activity. In less than one day after the magnetic activity decrease, the outer plasmasphere formed and consisted of cold, essentially Maxwellian plasma with ion composition and thermal energy characteristics generally similar to those of the inner plasmasphere, albeit at significantly lower densities. There is also evidence that at times the thermal O(+) density is comparable to the H(+) density within the plasmasphere.

TL;DR: In reviewing current pathogenetic theories, clinicopathological data, and therapeutic options, this report attempts to clarify the role of surgical intervention in indirect optic nerve injury.
Abstract: Visual loss due to optic nerve injury after closed head trauma constitutes a formidable diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the clinician. Assessment must be made of the site of optic nerve injury, and this is often difficult in the patient with an altered level of consciousness. A decision regarding optic nerve decompression must be formulated, yet the literature is confusing with regard to operative indications. In reviewing current pathogenetic theories, clinicopathological data, and therapeutic options, this report attempts to clarify the role of surgical intervention in indirect optic nerve injury.

TL;DR: It is suggested that a previously unrecognized mode of estrogen action to evoke the preovulatory LH surge is mediated by increasing the fraction of secretory gonadotropes, and not all cells containing LH can secrete it.
Abstract: Gonadotropes that secrete LH were demonstrated microscopically among mixed anterior pituitary (AP) cells in culture with a reverse hemolytic plaque assay. LH released from a cell binds to adjacent RBCs bearing an LH Ab-protein A complex which results in a zone of complement-mediated hemolysis (a plaque) surrounding each gonadotrope. In untreated cultures a few, small plaques formed, but in the presence of hypothalamic CnRH (10−7 M, a maximally stimulating dose) a 10-fold increase occurred in their number and size. Non-secretory gonadotropes were found in the pituitary of diestrous animals: 5-6% of all AP cells contained immunocytochemically detectable LH whereas only 2.5–3.0% formed plaques in the presence of CnRH (10−7 M). Nearly all of the gonadotropes were secretory at proestrus. Estradiol treatment of diestrous cultures for 24 h increased the fraction of secretory gonadotropes to near the level observed in proestrous cultures. These results a) demonstrate the utility of the reverse hemolytic plaque as...

TL;DR: An association of centers with the reduction of suicides in young white females emerged, and this finding was replicated on a different set of counties for a different time span.
Abstract: Since the 1960s, there has been a massive effort to reduce suicide mortality in the United States through prevention centers which invite suicidal persons to phone for supportive services. In spite of virtually total lack of evidence concerning the efficacy of these services, they proliferated until, by 1973, nearly every metropolitan area in the United States had at least one. Suicide rates increased slightly throughout this time. We studied 1968 through 1973, the years of greatest growth of suicide prevention facilities, comparing suicide rates in counties that added these centers with counties that did not do so. An association of centers with the reduction of suicides in young white females emerged. This finding was replicated on a different set of counties for a different time span. The results are discussed in light of the fact that this group constitutes the major clients of these centers.

TL;DR: The associations of both objective and subjective network characteristics with measures of subjective well-being were investigated in a sample of 1,185 persons aged 60 and over, with having enough instrumental help and contact with children appeared to be particularly important.
Abstract: Inconsistent evidence about the contributions of informal social networks to well-being may reflect a failure to measure quality as well as quantity of social involvement. The associations of both objective and subjective network characteristics with measures of subjective well-being were investigated in a sample of 1,185 persons aged 60 and over. The objective and subjective dimensions were empirically distinct, with subjective assessments of social ties and supports exhibiting stronger associations with well-being. Having enough instrumental help and contact with children appeared to be particularly important. Understanding the quality of social ties helps clarify the contributions of social involvement to the quality of life in old age.

TL;DR: In this paper, the steady state behavior of a flux of nonthermal electrons injected into a fully ionized thick target is examined, and it is found that injected electron distributions that are monotonically decreasing functions of electron energy develop at finite depths into distributions that have 'humps' in velocity space.
Abstract: The steady-state behavior of a flux of nonthermal electrons injected into a fully ionized thick target is examined. Owing to the (inverse square) energy dependence of the Coulomb collisional cross section, it is found that injected electron distributions that are monotonically decreasing functions of electron energy develop at finite depths into distributions that have 'humps' in velocity space; the electron energy corresponding to the hump correlates with the overlying particle column density to the target. This results in a two-stream unstable situation. The distribution is constantly being relaxed by quasi-linear relaxation and re-created by collisions; in this way a steady nonthermal level of Langmuir plasma waves is created, and these waves in turn produce microwave plasma radiation with a typical flux of 3 x 10 to the -16th erg/sq cm-sec. This flux can be enhanced by a factor of up to 100 by a high level of low-frequency (such as ion-acoustic) turbulence, which prevents quasi-linear relaxation for a sufficient fraction of the path length.
