Abstract: The tetramethylammonium counterion was used to suppress formation of insoluble uranate salts, M2U2O7, and allow for a detailed structural and spectroscopic characterization of UO2(OH)n2-n (n = 4, 5) under highly alkaline aqueous solution conditions. Single crystals of [Co(NH3)6]2[UO2(OH)4]3·H2O were obtained by cooling a dilute solution of Co(NH3)6Cl3 and UO2(NO3)2·6H2O in 3.5 M (Me4N)OH to 5 °C. The asymmetric unit contains three distinct UO2(OH)42- ions, each displaying a pseudo-octahedral coordination geometry with trans oxo ligands. The three independent UO2(OH)42- ions in the unit cell give average UO and U−OH distances of 1.82(1) and 2.26(2) A, respectively. EXAFS data on solid [Co(NH3)6]2[UO2(OH)4]3·H2O and aqueous UO22+ in 3.5 M (Me4N)OH solution were collected at the U LIII edge, and the resulting radial distribution function shows a single asymmetric peak. Abstract: This study tests the contextual social-cognitive model, which has served as the basis for the Coping Power program, an indicated preventive intervention with at-risk preadolescent boys at the time of transition from elementary to middle school. The contextual social-cognitive model assumes that aggressive children have distortions in their social-cognitive appraisals and deficiencies in their social problem solving skills and that their parents have deficiencies in their parenting behaviors. To test this model, boys were identified as being at risk on the basis of fourth grade and fifth grade teachers' ratings of children's aggressive and disruptive behaviors, and interventions were delivered at the end of elementary school and the beginning of middle school. The intervention effect on delinquency, substance use, and school behavior outcomes was at least partially mediated through intervention-produced changes in child and parent variables that were targets for the intervention. These analyses provided unique support for the assumptions in the contextual social-cognitive model that changes in these mediating processes, even among high-risk boys, can have a meaningful impact on later negative outcomes.

Abstract: Experimental studies have shown that antilymphocyte globulin combined with transfusion of donor-specific bone marrow cells can induce partial tolerance to allograft tissue. We have adapted these protocols to clinical use and present the results of 57 cadaveric renal allograft recipients who received Minnesota ALG followed by the transfusion of cryopreserved donor-specific bone marrow. A group of 54 patients received the contralateral kidney and similar immunosuppression without the marrow transfusion and serve as controls. Both groups received quadruple immunosuppression with MALG, cyclosporin, azathioprine, and prednisone. In the bone marrow group, after a 10-14 day induction course of ALG, cryopreserved marrow was transfused on the seventh day after the last dose of ALG. The median follow-up in both groups is 16 months, (range 2.5-33 months). Six grafts have been lost in the bone marrow group, (three rejections, 2 deaths [Cr 2.0, 2.3], 1 recurrent disease). In the control group 16 grafts have been lost (13 rejections, 3 deaths [Cr 1.7, 2.5, 3.0]). Five patients in the control group have biopsy-proved chronic rejection compared to one in the bone marrow group. 17 patients in the bone marrow group have been tapered off the prednisone, and three of these patients have had mild late rejection episodes without graft loss. The two groups were compared for differences in the number of rejection episodes, estimated renal plasma flow, glomerular filtration rate, and urine protein. No differences were found. The allograft survival of the bone marrow group was significantly greater (P less than .01) than the control group. The graft survival rates for the bone marrow group at 12 and 18 months were 90% (confidence limits [CL] 85-94) and 85% (CL 78-90), respectively. In the the control group the 12 and 18 month allograft survival rates were 71% (CL 63-78) and 67% (CL 58-74), respectively. The survival in the control group was similar to our overall transplant experience with quadruple therapy. Mixed lymphocyte culture analysis shows a trend to diminished donor-specific responsiveness in the bone marrow group. The use of cryopreserved donor-specific bone marrow is associated with improved allograft survival in cadaveric kidney allograft recipients. However, a more effective induction protocol is needed to reduce the overall number of rejection episodes.

Abstract: This paper empirically examines whether certain corporate governance mechanisms are related to the probability of a company restating its earnings. We examine a sample of 159 U.S. public companies that restated earnings and an industry-size matched sample of control firms. We have assembled a novel, hand-collected dataset measuring corporate governance characteristics of these 318 firms. We find that several key governance characteristics are unrelated to the probability of a company restating earnings. These include the independence of boards and audit committees, and the provision of non-audit services by outside auditors. We find that the probability of restatement is lower in companies whose boards or audit committees have an independent director with financial expertise; it is higher in companies where the CEO belongs to the founding family. These relations are statistically significant, large in magnitude, and robust to alternative specifications. Our findings are consistent with the idea that independent directors with financial expertise are valuable in providing oversight of a firm's financial reporting practices.
