TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of the theoretical contributions of distance education in the last century and assess the theoretical challenges facing the distance education field in order to assess the long-term credibility and viability of a distance education practice.
Abstract: The premise of this article is that theoretical frameworks and models are essential to the long-term credibility and viability of a eld of practice. In order to assess the theoretical challenges facing the eld of distance education, the signicant theoretical contributions to distance education in the last century are briey reviewed. This review of distance education as a eld of study reveals an early preoccupation with organizational and structural constraints. However, the review also reveals that the theoretical development of the eld is progressing from organizational to transactional issues and assumptions. The question is whether distance education has the theoretical foundation to take it into the 21st century and whether distance education theory development will keep pace with innovations in technology and practice.

TL;DR: It is suggested that while these theories may explain the immediate mechanism of precipitation of injuries, they all operate simultaneously and interact to modulate injuries to varying degrees in different cases.
Abstract: Based on the scientific evidence in published literature about precipitation of musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace, four theories have been proposed to explain these afflictions. Central to all theories is the presupposition that all occupational musculoskeletal injuries are biomechanical in nature. Disruption of mechanical order of a biological system is dependent on the individual components and their mechanical properties. These common denominators will be causally affected by the individual's genetic endowment, morphological characteristics and psychosocial makeup, and by the occupational biomechanical hazards. This phenomenon is explained by the Multivariate Interaction Theory. Differential Fatigue Theory accounts for unbalanced and asymmetric occupational activities creating differential fatigue and thereby a kinetic and kinematic imbalance resulting in injury precipitation. Cumulative Load Theory suggests a threshold range of load and repetition product beyond which injury precipitates, as all material substances have a finite life. Finally, Overexertion Theory claims that exertion exceeding the tolerance limit precipitates occupational musculoskeletal injury. It is also suggested that while these theories may explain the immediate mechanism of precipitation of injuries, they all operate simultaneously and interact to modulate injuries to varying degrees in different cases.

TL;DR: The results are discussed in terms of the “costs” of speaking with a foreign accent, and the relevance of such factors as accent and comprehensibility to second language teaching.
Abstract: In this study, a sentence verification task was used to determine the effect of a foreign accent on sentence processing time. Twenty native English listeners heard a set of English true/false statements uttered by ten native speakers of English and ten native speakers of Mandarin. The listeners assessed the truth value of the statements, and assigned accent and comprehensibility ratings. Response latency data indicated that the Mandarin-accented utterances required more time to evaluate than the utterances of the native English speakers. Furthermore, utterances that were assigned low comprehensibility ratings tended to take longer to process than moderately or highly comprehensible utterances. However, there was no evidence that degree of accent was related to processing time. The results are discussed in terms of the “costs” of speaking with a foreign accent, and the relevance of such factors as accent and comprehensibility to second language teaching.

TL;DR: It is suggested that aberrant development of white matter pathways may precede the manifestation of autistic symptoms in the first year of life in high-risk infants who developed autism spectrum disorders by 24 months.
Abstract: Children who developed autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) by age 2 had greater development of cerebral white matter fiber tracts by 6 months than unaffected children. After the initial accelerated white matter development, the children who developed ASDs had slower development, so that by age 2 their white matter development was less than that in the unaffected children.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify two archetypes in large Canadian law firms to show how ideas of professionalism and partnership are changing, due in part to shifts in discourses in the wider institutional context.
Abstract: This paper identifies two archetypes in large Canadian law firms to show how ideas of professionalism and partnership are changing, due in part to shifts in discourses in the wider institutional context. These changes in discourse themselves alter the interpretation of organizational structures and systems. This theme is explored through the concept of tracks and sedimentation. We explore the emergence of an organizational archetype that appears not to be secure, and which results in sedimented structures with competitive commit ments. The geological metaphor of sedimentation allows us to consider a dia lectical rather than a linear view of change. Case studies of two law firms show how one archetype is layered on the other, rather than representing a distinct transformation where one archetype sweeps away the residues of the other.
