Abstract: So far, the optical pulses used in phase-sensitive OTDR (ΦOTDR) were typically engineered so as to have a constant phase along the pulse. In this work, it is demonstrated that by acting on the phase profile of the optical pulses, it is possible to introduce important conceptual and practical changes to the traditional ΦOTDR operation, thus opening a door for new possibilities which are yet to be explored. Using a ΦOTDR with linearly chirped pulses and direct detection, the distributed measurement of temperature/strain changes from trace to trace, with 1mK/4ne resolution, is theoreticaly and experimentaly demonstrated. The measurand resolution and sensitivity can be tuned by acting on the pulse chirp profile. The technique does not require a frequency sweep, thus greatly decreasing the measurement time and complexity of the system, while maintaining the potential for metric spatial resolutions over tens of kilometers as in conventional ΦOTDR. The technique allows for measurements at kHz rates, while maintaining reliability over several hours.

Abstract: Objective Several open-label and double-blind studies have suggested that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors may be useful in the treatment of pathological gambling. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sertraline in the treatment of pathological gambling. Method Sixty patients meeting the DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling were treated for 6 months in a double-blind, flexible-dose, placebo-controlled study of sertraline 50 to 150 mg/day. Data were collected from November 1998 to January 2001. The primary outcome measure assessing change in clinical status was the responder rate with respect to the Criteria for Control of Pathological Gambling Questionnaire (CCPGQ). Secondary measures included the Clinical Global Impressions scale (CGI) (Severity of Illness and Improvement subscales), and Visual Analogue Scales assessing gambling frequency, severity, amount, and improvement. Concomitant medication and psychotherapy were not allowed during the study. Results At the end of the study, 23 sertraline-treated subjects (74%) and 21 placebo-treated subjects (72%) were considered as responders on the CCPGQ (p = .9). Similar results were obtained when the CGI-Improvement scale limited to symptoms of pathological gambling was used as an outcome measure. Sertraline was well tolerated throughout the study. Conclusion Sertraline was not statistically significantly superior to placebo in the overall sample. The power of the study was limited by the high placebo-response rate and the small sample size.

Abstract: A new laccase (EC 1.10.3.2) produced by Streptomyces cyaneus CECT 3335 in liquid media containing soya flour (20 g per liter) was purified to homogeneity. The physicochemical, catalytic, and spectral characteristics of this enzyme, as well as its suitability for biobleaching of eucalyptus kraft pulps, were assessed. The purified laccase had a molecular mass of 75 kDa and an isoelectric point of 5.6, and its optimal pH and temperature were 4.5 and 70°C, respectively. The activity was strongly enhanced in the presence of Cu2+, Mn2+, and Mg2+ and was completely inhibited by EDTA and sodium azide. The purified laccase exhibited high levels of activity against 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate) (ABTS) and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and no activity against tyrosine. The UV-visible spectrum of the purified laccase was the typical spectrum of the blue laccases, with an absorption peak at 600 nm and a shoulder around 330 to 340 nm. The ability of the purified laccase to oxidize a nonphenolic compound, such as veratryl alcohol, in the presence of ABTS opens up new possibilities for the use of bacterial laccases in the pulp and paper industry. We demonstrated that application of the laccase from S. cyaneus in the presence of ABTS to biobleaching of eucalyptus kraft pulps resulted in a significant decrease in the kappa number (2.3 U) and an important increase in the brightness (2.2%, as determined by the International Standard Organization test) of pulps, showing the suitability of laccases produced by streptomycetes for industrial purposes.
