Abstract: Thymidine phosphorylase (TP), also known as ''platelet-derived endothelial cell growth factor'' (PD-ECGF), is an enzyme, which is upregulated in a wide variety of solid tumors including breast and colorectal cancers. TP promotes tumor growth and metastasis by preventing apoptosis and inducing angiogenesis. Elevated levels of TP are associated with tumor aggressiveness and poor prognosis. Therefore, TP inhibitors are synthesized in an attempt to prevent tumor angiogenesis and metastasis. TP is also indispensable for the activation of the extensively used 5-fluorouracil prodrug capecitabine, which is clinically used for the treatment of colon and breast cancer. Clinical trials that combine capecitabine with TP-inducing therapies (such as taxanes or radiotherapy) suggest that in- creasing TP expression is an adequate strategy to enhance the antitumoral efficacy of capecitabine. Thus, TP plays a dual role in cancer development and therapy: on the one hand, TP inhibitors can abrogate the tumorigenic and metastatic properties of TP; on the other, TP activity is necessary for the activation of several chemotherapeutic drugs. This duality illustrates the complexity of the role of TP in tumor progression and in the clinical response to fluoropyrimidine-based chemotherapy. & 2009 Wiley

Abstract: The tetrodotoxin-resistant sodium channel α subunit, Nav1.8, is exclusively expressed in primary sensory neurons and is suggested to play a role in the generation of ectopic action potentials after axonal injury and thereby contribute to neuropathic pain. Here we investigated the involvement of Nav1.8 in ectopic impulse generation in damaged axons by examining spontaneous activity and mechanosensitivity in neuromas formed by section of the saphenous nerve in Nav1.8 null mice and in their wild-type littermates. We recorded 522 identified units from 24 neuromas in vitro at two time points, 8–11 days (median 10 days) and 19–29 days (median 22 days) post-operatively. At ≈10 days, neither genotype showed spontaneous activity, but a significantly higher proportion of fibres were mechanosensitive in wild-type (54 %) compared to Nav1.8 null neuromas (18 %). At ≈22 days, 19 % of fibres recorded in wild-type neuromas showed spontaneous activity, whereas only one fibre of the 238 (0.4 %) recorded in neuromas taken from null mice showed ongoing activity. In recordings at ≈22 days, a similar proportion of fibres were mechanosensitive in wild-type and Nav1.8 null neuromas (51 and 46 %, respectively). We conclude that Nav1.8 is essential for the expression of spontaneous activity in damaged sensory axons, and may also contribute to the development of ectopic mechanosensitivity.

Abstract: Neutrinos in the cosmic ray flux with energies near 1 EeV and above are detectable with the Surface Detector array (SD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory. We report here on searches through Auger data from 1 January 2004 until 20 June 2013. No neutrino candidates were found, yielding a limit to the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy neutrinos that challenges the Waxman-Bahcall bound predictions. Neutrino identification is attempted using the broad time structure of the signals expected in the SD stations, and is efficiently done for neutrinos of all flavors interacting in the atmosphere at large zenith angles, as well as for "Earth-skimming" neutrino interactions in the case of tau neutrinos. In this paper the searches for downward-going neutrinos in the zenith angle bins 60°-75°and 75°-90°as well as for upward-going neutrinos, are combined to give a single limit. The 90% C.L. single-flavor limit to the diffuse flux of ultrahigh energy neutrinos with an E-2 spectrum in the energy range 1.0×1017eV-2.5×1019eV is Eν2dNν/dEν<6.4×10-9GeVcm-2s-1sr-1.

Abstract: The COSTEP experiment on SOHO forms part of the CEPAC complex of instruments that will perform studies of the suprathermal and energetic particle populations of solar, interplanetary, and galactic origin. Specifically, the LION and EPHIN instruments are designed to use particle emissions from the Sun for several species (electrons, protons, and helium nuclei) in the energy range 44 keV/particle to > 53 MeV/n as tools to study critical problems in solar physics as well as fundamental problems in space plasma and astrophysics. Scientific goals are presented and a technical description is provided of the two sensors and the common data processing unit. Calibration results are presented which show the ability of LION to separate electrons from protons and the ability of EPHIN to obtain energy spectra and achieve isotope separation for light nuclei. A brief description of mission operations and data products is given.

Abstract: We report on our observations of the 79 and 119µm doublet transitions of OH for 24 local (z<0.262) ULIRGs observed with Herschel-PACS as part of the Herschel ULIRG Survey (HERUS). Some OH119 profiles display a clear P-Cygni shape and therefore imply outflowing OH gas, other profiles are predominantly in absorption or are completely in emission. We find that the relative strength of the OH emission component decreases as the silicate absorption increases. This locates the OH outflows inside the obscured nuclei. The maximum outflow velocities for our sources range from less than 100 to �2000km s −1 , with 15/24 (10/24) sources showing OH absorption at velocities exceeding 700km s −1 (1000km s −1 ). Three sources show maximum OH outflow velocities exceeding that of Mrk231. Since outflow velocities above 500–700km s −1 are thought to require an active galactic nucleus (AGN) to drive them, about 2/3 of our ULIRG sample may host AGN-driven molecular outflows. This finding is supported by the correlation we find between the maximum OH outflow velocity and the IR-derived bolometric AGN luminosity. No such correlation is found with the IR-derived star formation rate. The highest outflow velocities are found among sources which are still deeply embedded. We speculate that the molecular outflows in these sources may be in an early phase of disrupting the nuclear dust veil before these sources evolve into less obscured AGN. Four of our sources show high-velocity wings in their [C II] fine-structure line profiles implying neutral gas outflow masses of at least 2–4.5×10 8 M⊙.
