TL;DR: Unlike previously described sensorineural deafness genes, all of which underlie cochlear cell pathologies, DFNB59 is the first human gene implicated in nonsyndromic deafness due to a neuronal defect.
Abstract: Auditory neuropathy is a particular type of hearing impairment in which neural transmission of the auditory signal is impaired, while cochlear outer hair cells remain functional. Here we report on DFNB59, a newly identified gene on chromosome 2q31.1-q31.3 mutated in four families segregating autosomal recessive auditory neuropathy. DFNB59 encodes pejvakin, a 352-residue protein. Pejvakin is a paralog of DFNA5, a protein of unknown function also involved in deafness. By immunohistofluorescence, pejvakin is detected in the cell bodies of neurons of the afferent auditory pathway. Furthermore, Dfnb59 knock-in mice, homozygous for the R183W variant identified in one DFNB59 family, show abnormal auditory brainstem responses indicative of neuronal dysfunction along the auditory pathway. Unlike previously described sensorineural deafness genes, all of which underlie cochlear cell pathologies, DFNB59 is the first human gene implicated in nonsyndromic deafness due to a neuronal defect.

TL;DR: Indian landfill methane emissions are estimated at 1.25 Tg/year or 1.68 TG/year, within the range of existing estimates, and a comparison with a recently proposed triangular model shows that both models can be used for the estimation of methane generation.

TL;DR: The European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps 2012 as discussed by the authors is the update of similar evidence-based position papers published in 2005 and 2007, it contains chapters on definitions and classification, we now also proposed definitions for difficult to treat rhinositis, control of disease, and better definitions for rhinosinitis in children.
Abstract: The European Position Paper on Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyps 2012 is the update of similar evidence based position papers published in 2005 and 2007. The document contains chapters on definitions and classification, we now also proposed definitions for difficult to treat rhinosinusitis, control of disease and better definitions for rhinosinusitis in children. More emphasis is placed on the diagnosis and treatment of acute rhinosinusitis. Throughout the document the terms chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP) and chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) are used to further point out differences in pathophysiology and treatment of these two entities. There are extensive chapters on epidemiology and predisposing factors, inflammatory mechanisms, (differential) diagnosis of facial pain, genetics, cystic fibrosis, aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease, immunodeficiencies, allergic fungal rhinosinusitis and the relationship between upper and lower airways. The chapters on paediatric acute and chronic rhinosinusitis are totally rewritten. Last but not least all available evidence for management of acute rhinosinusitis and chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps in adults and children is analyzed and presented and management schemes based on the evidence are proposed. This executive summary for otorhinolaryngologists focuses on the most important changes and issues for otorhinolaryngologists. TL;DR: The Medcouple as mentioned in this paper is a robust alternative to the classical skewness coefficient, which has a 25% breakdown value and a bounded influence function, and it has a fast algorithm for its computation, and investigate its finite sample behavior through simulated and real datasets.
Abstract: The asymmetry of a univariate continuous distribution is commonly measured by the classical skewness coefficient. Because this estimator is based on the first three moments of the dataset, it is strongly affected by the presence of one or more outliers. This article investigates the medcouple, a robust alternative to the classical skewness coefficient. We show that it has a 25% breakdown value and a bounded influence function. We present a fast algorithm for its computation, and investigate its finite-sample behavior through simulated and real datasets.
