Abstract: Typical Raman spectra of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) display two prominent peaks, E2g and A1g, that are well separated from each other. We find that these modes are degenerate in bulk WSe2 yielding one single Raman peak. As the dimensionality is lowered, the observed peak splits in two as a result of broken degeneracy. In contrast to our experimental findings, our phonon dispersion calculations reveal that these modes remain degenerate independent of the number of layers. Interestingly, for minuscule biaxial strain the degeneracy is preserved but once the crystal symmetry is broken by uniaxial strain, the degeneracy is lifted. Our calculated phonon dispersion for uniaxially strained WSe2 shows a perfect match to the measured Raman spectrum which suggests that uniaxial strain exists in WSe2 flakes possibly induced during the sample preparation and/or as a result of interaction between WSe2 and the substrate. Furthermore, we find that WSe2 undergoes an indirect to direct bandgap transition from bulk to monolayers which is ubiquitous for semiconducting TMDs. These results not only allow us to understand the vibrational properties of WSe2 but also provides detailed insight to their physical properties.

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disorder of unknown aetiology, is usually considered to be a single disorder because of the general uniformity of the disease phenotype. Two recent genetic linkage studies revealed co-segregation of familial Alzheimer disease with the D21S1/S11 and D21S16 loci on chromosome 21. But two other studies, one of predominantly multiplex kindreds with a late age-of-onset, the other of a cadre of kindreds with a unique Volga German ethnic origin, found absence of linkage at least to D21S1/S11. So far it has not been possible to discern whether these conflicting reports reflect aetiological heterogeneity, differences in methods of pedigree selection, effects of confounding variables in the analysis (for example, diagnostic errors, assortative matings), or true non-replication. To resolve this issue, we have now examined the inheritance of five polymorphic DNA markers from the proximal long arm of chromosome 21 in a large unselected series of pedigrees with familial Alzheimer's disease. Our data suggest that Alzheimer's disease is not a single entity, but rather results from genetic defects on chromosome 21 and from other genetic or nongenetic factors.

Abstract: The rapid growth of object-oriented development over the past twenty years has given rise to many object-oriented systems that are large, complex and hard to maintain. These systems exhibit a range of problems, effectively preventing them from satisfying the evolving requirements imposed by their customers. In our paper, we address problem of understanding and reengineering such object-oriented legacy systems. The material is presented as a set of "reengineering patterns" - recurring solutions that experts apply while reengineering and maintaining object-oriented systems. The patterns distill successful techniques in planning a reengineering project, reverse-engineering, problem detection, migration strategies and software redesign. The principles and techniques described have been observed and validated in a number of industrial projects, and reflect best practice in object-oriented reengineering.

Abstract: Recent studies from this laboratory have provided some evidence that major depression, in particular melancholia, may be accompanied by an immune response. The present study was designed to investigate whether severe depression is characterized by increased interleukin-6 (Il-6) activity and whether Il-6 production is related to altered levels of acute phase reactants and to abnormal function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Measurements were made in 8 healthy control subjects and 24 depressed inpatients of Il-6 production in culture supernatants of mitogen-stimulated peripheral leukocytes and plasma levels of haptoglobin (Hp), transferrin (Tf), and postdexamethasone cortisol. Il-6 activity was significantly higher in melancholic subjects than in healthy control subjects and in patients with minor depression or nonmelancholic major depression. Il-6 production was significantly correlated with Hp (positively) and Tf (negatively) plasma levels. There were significant and positive correlations between Il-6 activity and postdexamethasone cortisol values. The findings may suggest that increased Il-6 activity in severe depression is related to hypotransferrinemia, hyperhaptoglobinemia, and hyperactivity of the HPA axis.
