Abstract: The Zapatista uprising, which started in 1994, and the ‘Battle of Seattle’ in 1999 are but two iconic examples that are so often used to illustrate how the internet has shaped and is shaping social movements and the tactics they use to pursue their claims. In this article, the authors present the ‘state-of-the-art’ literature on action repertoires of social movements in an internet age. The article builds a strong case in favour of the internet as it has given social movements new and improved opportunities to engage in social and political action. At the same time, a naive internet-optimism is avoided, by pointing out several limitations. There is the ‘classical’ problem of digital divide. In some cases, the internet has made collective action still not easy enough, while in others it has made it perhaps too easy reducing the final political impact of a certain action. Abstract: Background: Adjuvant chemotherapy has been suggested as a possible strategy to improve survival in women with early-stage ovarian cancer; however, all randomized studies to date have been too small to answer this question reliably Methods: We performed a preplanned combined analysis of two parallel randomized clinical trials (International Collaborative Ovarian Neoplasm 1 [ICON1] and Adjuvant ChemoTherapy In Ovarian Neoplasm [ACTION]) in early-stage ovarian cancer that compared platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy with observation following surgery Between November 1990 and January 2000, 925 patients (477 in ICON1 and 448 in ACTION) who had surgery for early-stage ovarian cancer were randomly assigned to receive platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy (n = 465) or observation (n = 460) until chemotherapy was indicated Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to compare overall and recurrence-free survival by treatment allocation In subgroup analyses of pretreatment age, tumor stage, histologic cell type, and differentiation grade, the differences in relative size of effect were tested using a chi-square test for interaction or a chi-square test for trend All tests of statistical significance were two-sided Results: After a median follow-up of over 4 years, 245 patients had died or had a recurrence (ICON1: 133, ACTION: 112) Overall survival at 5 years was 82% in the chemotherapy arm and 74% in the observation arm (difference = 8% [95% confidence interval (CI) = 2% to 12%]; hazard ratio [HR] = 067, 95% CI = 050 to 090; P = 008) Recurrence-free survival at 5 years was also better in the adjuvant chemotherapy arm than it was in the observation arm (76% versus 65%, difference = 11% [95% CI = 5% to 16%]; HR = 064, 95% CI = 050 to 082; P = 001) Subgroup analyses provided no evidence of a difference in the size of effect of chemotherapy on survival in any pretreatment subcategory Conclusions: Platinum-based adjuvant chemotherapy improved overall survival and recurrence-free survival at 5 years in this combined group of patients with early-stage ovarian cancer defined by the inclusion criteria of the ICON1 and ACTION trials

Abstract: The role of developmental instability (DI), as measured by fluctuating asymmetry (FA), in evolutionary biology has been the focus of a wealth of research for more than half a century. In spite of this long period and many published papers, our current state of knowledge reviewed here only allows us to conclude that patterns are heterogeneous and that very little is known about the underlying causes of this heterogeneity. In addition, the statistical properties of FA as a measure of DI are only poorly grasped because of a general lack of understanding of the underlying mechanisms that drive DI. If we want to avoid that this area of research becomes abandoned, more efforts should be made to understand the observed heterogeneity, and attempts should be made to develop a unifying statistical protocol. More specifically, and perhaps most importantly, it is argued here that more attention should be paid to the usefulness of FA as a measure of DI since many factors might blur this relationship. Furthermore, the genetic architecture, associations with fitness and the importance of compensatory growth should be investigated under a variety of stress situations. In addition, more focus should be directed to the underlying mechanisms of DI as well as how these processes map to the observable phenotype. These insights could yield more efficient statistical models and a unified approach to the analysis of patterns in FA and DI. The study of both DI and canalization is indispensable to obtain better insights in their possible common origin, especially because both have been suggested to play a role in both micro- and macro-evolutionary processes.
