TL;DR: The medial and lateral habenular nuclei of the cat project differentially to the septum, olfactory, tubercle, thalamus, midbrain tegmentum and tectum and the compact part rises from both nuclei.
Abstract: Lesions were made in the lateral and medial habenular nuclei of the cat. Subsequent degeneration of nerve fibers and terminalis was studied using Nauta-Gygax silver technique. The medial and lateral habenular nuclei project differentially to the septum, olfactory, tubercle, thalamus, midbrain tegmentum and tectum. The diffuse part of the habenulopeduncular tract rises from the lateral habenular nucleus and the compact part rises from both nuclei. Degenerating terminals were seen caudally in the following nuclei: interpeduncular, central superior, dorsal raphae, ventral tegmental (from the medial habenular nucleus), dosral tegmental (from the lateral habenular nucleus), pretectal area, superior colliculus and inferior colliculus (from the lateral habenular nucleus). Rostral projections course in the medial part of the stria medullaris from the medial habenular nucleus and in the lateral part of the stria medullaris from the lateral habenular nucleus: Degenerating terminals were seen rostrally in the following nuclei: dorsomedial, anteroventral, anterodorsal, paraventricular, posterior medial septal (from the medial habenular nucleus) and preoptic area (from the lateral habenular nucleus). Projections occur from the medial habenular nucleus to the amygdala via the stria terminalis.
The habenular nuclei are considered to be structures of the limbic system which are differentially related to midbrain, thalamic, amygdaloid, septal and preoptic structures via feedback circuits.

TL;DR: Twenty-five patients with proven pulmonary emboli were followed for at least 20 weeks with serial scans and, in select cases, angiograms to determine the factors influencing the rate of resolution to identify patients susceptible to recurrent embolization.
Abstract: Twenty-five patients with proven pulmonary emboli were followed for at least 20 weeks with serial scans and, in select cases, angiograms to determine the factors influencing the rate of resolution. Fifteen patients showed complete resolution at some time during the observation period. Five of these 15 patients experienced recurrent embolic episodes either before or after complete resolution. The remaining 10 patients included two who died of recurrent massive emboli, three who had recurrent episodes resulting in incomplete resolution, two who showed incomplete resolution at 20 weeks without recurrent emboli, and three who were lost to follow-up. Twenty-one patients exhibited prompt resolution in single or multiple embolic episodes, and four experienced slow resolution. Recurrent embolization is the most significant event in preventing restoration of blood flow. This is most likely to occur in the patient who presents with (1) an initial field defect in excess of 35%, (2) associated heart disease, and (3) ...

TL;DR: It is concluded that both criteria of calcification are manifestations of different stages of the overall calcification process and that studies of ion uptake provide a quantitative assessment of calcifying which could be of importance for investigating the mechanism and control of tissue mineralization.
Abstract: Factors that influence the rate and extent of the phenomenon in which calcium and phosphate ions become firmly associated with collagen-containing fibers prepared from beef tendon by two different extraction methods have been investigated. The fibers produced by both methods specifically require phosphate for calcium uptake and calcium is required for phosphate uptake. Ion uptake by both types is inhibited by Mg++, pyrophosphate, and an acidic peptide isolated from human serum. Whereas the collagen-containing fibers prepared by both methods induce ion uptake at nearly identical rates, only one of the methods produced a matrix that gives a positive response to the silver nitrate staining technique of von Kossa. Since both criteria of calcification are similarly influenced by reaction conditions and inhibitors, it is concluded that both are manifestations of different stages of the overall calcification process and that studies of ion uptake provide a quantitative assessment of calcification which could be of importance for investigating the mechanism and control of tissue mineralization.

TL;DR: The results are in general agreement with those reported by others, however, the septum projects differentially to the habenula and the patterns differ slightly in the three species studied.
Abstract: Septohabenular projections were studied using the Nauta-gygax method of staining degenerating axons. The results are in general agreement with those reported by others. However, the septum projects differentially to the habenula and the patterns differ slightly in the three species studied. Rostral parts of the septum projected to the lateral habenular nucleus and posterior parts to the medial nucleus. Dorsal and ventral structures of the septum had a slight dorsal ventral topography of projection in the stria medullaris thalami. Projection through the stria medullaris was confined to its medial part only in the rat. The largest number of fibers to bypass the habenula and terminate in the mesencephalic central gray occurred in the monkey.

TL;DR: The measure of category clustering proposed by Bousfleld et al. as discussed by the authors was modified to take into account differences in the distribution of the expected value of number of repetitions.
Abstract: The measure of category clustering proposed by Bousfleld & Bousfleld (1966) was modified to take into account differences in the distribution of the expected value of number of repetitions. The possible effects of using the clustering index without this major modification are discussed.

TL;DR: Study of living hyphae of Fusarium oxysporum Schlect, Fomes annosus, CeratocystMs fagacearum, and Mycotypha microspora Fenner with phase contrast revealed that these fungi have spherosomes similar to those in vascular plants.
Abstract: A B S T R A C T Study of living hyphae of Fusarium oxysporum Schlect., Fomes annosus (Fries) Cooke, CeratocystMs fagacearum (Bretz) Hunt, Basidiobolus ranarum Eidam, and Mycotypha microspora Fenner with phase contrast revealed that these fungi have spherosomes similar to those in vascular plants. The spherosomes are conspicuous in the hyphal tip, suggesting some function other than fat synthesis. It may be that the Woronin bodies reported by other workers are spherosomes. Mitochondria in these fungi are highly pleomorphic and exhibit saltatory movement. They often interact with nuclei in a manner suggesting close membrane contact.

TL;DR: Gossypol as a possible uncoupler is discussed and compared to carbonyl cyanide, m-chlorophenyl hydrazone and 2,4-dinitrophenol.
Abstract: Mitochondria isolated from 2 strains of cotton plant hypocotyls (Gossypium hirsutum L. var. Rex smooth leaf and Rex glandless) were examined for their oxidative phosphorylation activities. Bovine serum albumin at a relatively high concentration was essential in the extraction medium for the isolation of oxidatively active mitochondria from both strains of cotton. Phosphorylation was obtained only with Rex glandless cotton mitochondria. This activity was low in comparison to the mitochondria isolated from soybeans (Glycine max L. var. Lee). The endogenous gossypol content was found to be much higher in the Rex smooth leaf tissue than in the Rex glandless tissue. In turn, comparable gossypol differences were found associated with their respective mitochondrial fractions. Exogenous gossypol uncoupled succinate oxidation with active mitochondria isolated from soybeans. Gossypol as a possible uncoupler is discussed and compared to carbonyl cyanide, m-chlorophenyl hydrazone and 2,4-dinitrophenol.

TL;DR: It is suggested that estrogen induces increased “gamma globulin” synthesis whose origin is in part in the reticuloendothelial system.
Abstract: SummaryAdult Sceloporus cyanogenys were treated with 250 μg of estradiol valerate for 5, 11, 15 and 42 days. The bones were studied histologically and the plasma chemistry was determined. No morphological changes were observed in the bones. The plasma calcium and inorganic phosphorus were significantly elevated from the controls within 5 days after the injection. The proteins did not increase significantly until 11 days after injection, and the elevation occurred only in the “gamma globulin” component. It is suggested that estrogen induces increased “gamma globulin” synthesis whose origin is in part in the reticuloendothelial system.

TL;DR: This paper analyzes production stations that operate in conjunction with conveyors and proposes an operating policy, the sequential range policy, which is proposed as a method for operating the production stations.
Abstract: This paper analyzes production stations that operate in conjunction with conveyors. Two types of production stations are considered: 1 loading stations that load processed material to the conveyor, and 2 unloading stations that remove material from the conveyor. An operating policy, the sequential range policy, is proposed as a method for operating the production stations. An analysis of the sequential range policy is given. The system is considered as a discrete-time queuing process with a stationary Bernoulli arrival rate. In-process storage is treated as a Markov process discrete in time and discrete in space. The expected number of units in storage and the expected delay per unit produced are derived. Certain economic problems are considered.
