TL;DR: The main conclusion drawn from this analysis is that historical as well as adaptive factors are important in explaining the geographical distribution of chromosomal arrangements in D. subobscura, because of lack of coadaptation with the gene pool of the recipient population.
Abstract: Distances between populations ofDrosophila subobscura, based on differences in the frequencies of chromosomal arrangements have been estimated using data from about 65 populations. The distances have been calculated using the formula: $$D = \frac{1}{{2r}}{\text{ }}\sum\limits_{j = 1}^r {\sum\limits_{k = 1}^{Sj} {|p_{1jk} - } p_{2jk} |} {\text{ }},$$ wherer is the number of loci or chromosomes (in the case of chromosomal polymorphism) considered,p1jk the frequency of the allele or chromosomal arrangementk in the locus or chromosomej in the first population, andpzjk the corrsponding value in the second population.

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that most of the discussions on relationships between stability and diversity lead nowhere, particularly because it is difficult, perhaps impossible, to find direct causal relationships between them, and to explain stability in terms of diversity or vice-versa.
Abstract: Diversity, stability and maturity, like niche and competitive exclusion, have been at the centre of much discussion. By covering a wide spectrum of meanings these terms have been useful in stimulating—and also in muddling—thinking. It now seems that most of the discussions on relationships between stability and diversity lead nowhere, particularly because it is difficult, perhaps impossible, to find direct causal relationships between them, and to explain stability in terms of diversity or vice-versa. This is because both concepts, as they are used, refer to external or peripheral properties of the ecosystem, and any empirical relation between them is a consequence of their common dependence on more fundamental properties of the ecosystem.

TL;DR: The results from detailed calculations of lithium, beryllium, and boron production by spallation reactions at low energies are reported in this paper, where Proton and $alpha$-induced reactions, destruction, and deceleration effects are included.
Abstract: The results from detailed calculations of lithium, beryllium, and boron production by spallation reactions at low energies are reported. Proton and $alpha$-induced reactions, destruction, and deceleration effects are included. The abundances and isotopic ratios for particle spectra analogous to those observed in solar flares (power law in kinetic energy), agree with the solar system values. We therefore suggest stellar flares and/or low-energy cosmic rays as the main contributors to the nucleosynthesis of these elements. (AIP)

TL;DR: It is suggested that a certain number of Neoprene sensitizations could be sensitized to dodecyl mercapthane contained in it, and the recommended solution for patch testing is: 0.1 % in toluol.
Abstract: Changes in the shoe industry have replaced some of the former allergens and introduced some new ones. In 45 cases of shoe contact dermatitis, the lack of response to known allergens inspired the authors to review present-day industrial shoe manufacture. Two new resin allergens for shoe dermatitis have been found: dodecyl mercapthane and polyurethanes. The first is used in the plastics industry to arrest the polymerization process. We suggest the possibility that a certain number of Neoprene sensitizations could be sensitizations to dodecyl mercapthane contained in it. The recommended solution for patch testing is: 0.1% in toluol.

TL;DR: On the basis of the chromatographic behavior of 14 closely related compounds of this series, the substituent ΔRmconstants for the main functional groups are calculated, so that the gastric absorption constants of nontested barbiturates can be predicted with close approximation.
Abstract: A linear correlation between the logarithm of the in situgastric absorption rate constants (ka)of 5-substituted barbiturates and their Rm values in selected reversed-phase partition chromatographic systems is demonstrated, as well as between the Δlog ka and the ΔRm derived parameters. On the basis of the chromatographic behavior of 14 closely related compounds of this series, the substituent ΔRm constants for the main functional groups are calculated, so that the gastric absorption constants of nontested barbiturates can be predicted with close approximation. Predicted Rm and log ka values show an excellent correlation with log 1/C values taken from pharmacological literature data. The migration mechanisms involved in reversed-phase partition chromatography are discussed in connection with the results obtained with other types of partition systems and with bulk-phase solvents. The possible relationships between chromatographic parameters and absorption rate constants found from absorption sites other than the stomach are outlined; as well as the advantages and limitations of the procedure.

TL;DR: Thin layer chromatography of methyl esters of the urinary porphyrin was undertaken in sixty‐six patients with different types of porphyria, and forty‐five relatives, and in patients with hepatic cirrhosis, three patients with lead poisoning and normal control subjects.
Abstract: SUMMARY The porphyrin metabolism of 100 patients with porphyria and 351 of their relatives has been studied. Thin layer chromatography of methyl esters of the urinary porphyrin was undertaken in sixty-six patients with different types of porphyria, and forty-five relatives, seventeen patients with hepatic cirrhosis, three patients with lead poisoning and twenty normal control subjects. This investigation was also made on the stools of thirty-six patients with porphyria, and ten of their relatives. Countercurrent analysis of the bile of nine selected patients with porphyria was also undertaken. The results provide some evidence that symptomatic hepatic porphyria may be familial. Thin layer chromatography was decisive in the characterization of a new type of porphyria described recently by the authors (hepato-erythrocytic porphyria). The counter-current examination of the bile showed the absence of the ‘S 411’ porphyrin in all the nine cases investigated.

TL;DR: It is postulated that the propositus is double heterozygous for two abnormal alleles, and the mother contributes a mutant allele with abnormal electrophoretic mobility and thermolability at 48°C whereas the father contributes an allele without enzymatic activity.
Abstract: A new case of glucose phosphate isomerase deficiency associated with congenital nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia is described in a 12-year-old girl of Spanish origin. The parents exhibited erythrocyte glucose phosphate isomerase activity between 50 and 60% of normal. The enzyme of the propositus had normal Michaelis-Menten constants both for F-6-P and G-6-P, but abnormal pH optimum and decreased heat stability at 48°C. On starch-gel electrophoresis the father's enzyme was normal but the mother's showed a cathodic migrating band in addition to the normal one. The enzyme from the propositus exhibited only one band with cathodal mobility of 116% of the main band found in normal subjects. It is postulated that the propositus is double heterozygous for two abnormal alleles, and the mother contributes a mutant allele with abnormal electrophoretic mobility and thermolability at 48°C whereas the father contributes an allele without enzymatic activity.

Abstract: SixChrysolina species from Catalonia and the Canary Islands (Spain), viz.americana, gemina, femoralis, cerealis, menthastri andpolita, have similar diploid karyotypes of 24 (sub)metacentric chromosomes, and show Xy sex-determining system.C. banksi andobsoleta have 2n (♂)=23; their karyotype is presumably derived from that of the former group by loss of the y chromosomes. InC. haemoptera andC. carnifex 40 elements appear in the diploid set. It seems that 2n=24 is the most frequent number in theChrysolina. Higher chromosome numbers have possibly originated through centric fissions, as the acrocentric shape ofC. carnifex chromosomes seems to suggest. The 2n=23 and 24 species feed onLabiatae, while the two higher chromosome number species are associated with plants belonging to other families.

TL;DR: In this article, the applicability of a zeroth thermodynamic law for non-equilibrium systems with Monte Carlo dynamics was investigated and it was shown that the coupling described in the first case is not enough to make asymptotically the effective temperatures of the two interacting subsystems equalize, the reason being the too small thermal conductivity between them in the aging state.
Abstract: In order to describe the thermodynamics of the glassy systems it has been recently introduced an extra parameter, the effective temperature which generalizes the fluctuation-dissipation theorem (FDT) to off-equilibrium systems and supposedly describes thermal fluctuations around the aging state. Using this concept we investigate the applicability of a zeroth thermodynamic law for non-equilibrium systems. In particular we study two coupled systems of harmonic oscillators with Monte Carlo dynamics. We analyze in detail two types of dynamics: 1) sequential dynamics where the coupling between the subsystems comes only from the Hamiltonian and 2) parallel dynamics where there is a further coupling between the subsystems arising from the dynamics. We show that the coupling described in the first case is not enough to make asymptotically the effective temperatures of the two interacting subsystems equalize, the reason being the too small thermal conductivity between them in the aging state. This explains why different interacting degrees of freedom in structural glasses may stay at different effective temperatures without never mutually thermalizing.

TL;DR: Clinically this syndrome may be defined as the association of hypernatremia and hyperosmolality due to osmotic diuresis from urea appearing in a cirrhotic patient with ascites and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Abstract: 3 patients with hepatic cirrhosis and ascites underwent increased diuresis on six occasions, closely related to episodes of gastrointestinal bleeding In each instance the increased urine volume was preceded by a sharp increase in blood urea nitrogen, presumably due to absorption of nitrogenous compounds from the gastrointestinal tract, suggesting a mechanism of osmotic diuresis In each case there was a significant increase in serum sodium and osmolality, related to the greater-water-than-sodium diuresis induced by urea, which was promptly reversed by the administration of water or isotonic solution Clinically this syndrome may be defined as the association of hypernatremia and hyperosmolality due to osmotic diuresis from urea appearing in a cirrhotic patient with ascites and gastrointestinal bleeding

TL;DR: In this article, a simple method was presented to expand the eigenvalues of a central potential V(r), with Coulomb behavior at the origin, as a power series in 1/g.
Abstract: A simple method is presented to expand the eigenvaluesEl(g) for a central potentialV(r), with Coulomb behaviour at the origin, as a power series in 1/g. The rational approximants to such series may provide accurate estimates ofEnl(g). We illustrate the merits of this strong-coupling expansion method for the Yukawa potential. As shown, the technique herein developed works extraordinarily well in this typical example.

Abstract: Liver glycogen synthase from adult non-treated frogs is essentially completely dependent on glucose-6-P. Administration of glucose to the animals promotes the appearance of a form of glycogen synthase active in absence of glucose-6-P. These two forms show different kinetic characteristics. The enzyme from glucoseinjected animals corresponds to anI form whereas the enzyme from non-treated animals appears to be aD form.

TL;DR: The interaction between polysilicic acid and human serum albumin monolayers can be inhibited by the action of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The interaction between polysilicic acid and human serum albumin monolayers can be inhibited by the action of polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP). This effect is produced by a competition between the polymer and the protein for the silanol groups of polysilicic acid. The results obtained show that in a substrate containing 0.30 g/l of SiO2 in form of polysilicic acid a concentration of 80 mg/l of PVP is enough to produce the inhibition of the silicic-protein interaction.

Chemical shifts and coupling constants of five 2-fluorobenzothiazoles 6-substituted by Me, H, F, Cl and NO2 are given. A large cross-ring coupling constant (J26 = 10·4 Hz) is found in the 2,6-difluorobenzothiazole.
