TL;DR: The results indicate that the preferred food is made of three different species ofAframomum, and that gorillas like sweet-sour flavors and are attracted by green and intense red colors.
Abstract: Some important aspects of the alimentation of the lowland gorillas have been studied in eight different localities in Rio Muni (West Africa) during several periods of time from 1956 to 1969; our observations totalize 672 hr, of which 54.5 hr have been of direct visual contact with the animals. Also included are 29 hr of direct visual contact with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda (Central Africa) during the months of July and August, 1972.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the first-order kinetics of bulk crystallization of Se61.5Ge15 4Sb23.1 glasses from their thermal behavior.
Abstract: The kinetics of bulk crystallization of Se61.5Ge15 4Sb23.1 glasses was investigated from their thermal behaviour. In the thermal characterization of a glass the recrystallization temperature is highly dependent on both the rate of heating and the thermal history of the glass. Vitreous samples were prepared by quenching. From ratedependent curves it was found that the recrystallization process obeys first-order kinetics with an apparent activation enthalpy of 48±5 kcal/mole. Further analysis allows determination of both the activation enthalpy,H=90±4 kcal/mole, and the kinetic exponent of the Avrami equation,n=1.9±0.3.

TL;DR: Four patients with hereditary glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency and their parents have been studied by means of various enzymatic, immunologic, electrophoretic, and stability methods and it is established that all of the patients were heterozygous for two different mutated alleles inherited from each parent.
Abstract: Summary: Four patients with hereditary glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency and their parents have been studied by means of various enzymatic, immunologic, electrophoretic, and stability methods. The four defective mutants enzymes (identified here as “GPI Barcelona,” “GPI Utrecht,” “GPI Nijmegen,” and “GPI Kortrijk”) were antigenically identical with normal enzyme as judged by double immunodiffusion and microcomplement fixation tests. Immunologic specific activity (i.e., the ratio of enzyme activity to antigen concentration) was slightly lowered for three variants (between 60 and 75% of normal). The various methods used allowed us to establish that all of the patients were heterozygous for two different mutated alleles inherited from each parent. One of them was a silent allele which did not seem to code for any enzymatic cross-reacting material; the other mutated gene coded for a structurally modified glucose phosphate isomerase subunit. In two parents heterozygous for a structurally modified gene, only two enzymatic forms were detected, even in the young cells synthesizing actively proteins such as granulocytes: one was the normal homodimer, and the other corresponded to the heterodimer “normal subunit-mutant subunit”; the mutant homodimer was not detected. The assumption that, in these heterozygotes, the mutant subunit dimerized more easily with a normal subunit than with another mutant subunit could be proposed. In contrast, the three expected enzyme forms were detected in the leukocytes from a woman heterozygous for GPI Nijmegen. From these results the defect in activity observed in the patients could be explained in the following way: 50% of the defect was due to the inheritance of a silent gene. The decrease below 50% of the residual activity in red cells was due to the molecular instability of the mutant enzyme associated in three cases (GPI Barcelona, GPI Utrecht, and GPI Kortrijk) with the decreased immunologic specific activity. Speculation: In spite of the relatively high frequency of the mutations which are responsible for a silent GPI structural gene, GPI deficiency due to the inheritance of two silent genes has never been described. It can be speculated that the homozygous state of such a mutation, which would lead to null enzyme activity in all the tissues, could be lethal. As in most cases of genetic disorders due to silent genes, the nature of the mutation involved is unknown. A deletion, a polar mutation, a structural mutation leading to a highly labile product, or a cis-dominant regulator mutation are the different genetic hypotheses which could be put forward.

TL;DR: In vitro and with purified preparation of lactate dehydrogenase, hydroxypyruvate stimulates the production of oxalate from glyoxylate-hydrated form and from NAD; the effect is due to the fact that hydroxylate prevents the binding of non-Hydrated form of glyxylate to the lactatehydrogenase in the pyruVate binding site.

TL;DR: Thyroid lymphography was found to be of value in demonstrating the presence or absence of metastases to cervical lymph nodes and, thereby, in determining the necessity for radical neck dissection.
Abstract: Lymphography of the thyroid gland was performed in 82 patients with multinodular goiter (41), solitary thyroid nodule (36), and hyperthyroidism (5). Six of the patients proved to have cancer. The studies showed that each thyroid lobe has its own intraglandular lymphatics and drains only to homolateral cervical lymph nodes. The absence of lymphatic connections between the two thyroid lobes casts doubt on the proposal that cancer cells spread from one lobe to the other by way of the lymphatics. Thyroid lymphography was found to be of value in demonstrating the presence or absence of metastases to cervical lymph nodes and, thereby, in determining the necessity for radical neck dissection. Lymphography was also useful in detecting unsuspected small thyroid nodules.

TL;DR: In this article, the double-beta-decay process of 48Ca was studied in detail and it was shown that |δ − 1| ≤ 3·10−6.
Abstract: In this paper we study the double-beta-decay process in order to test the existence of an electronic lepton number conservation law. We give general formulae for the transitions 0+ → 0+, 0+ → 2+, 0+ → 4+ for neutrinoless double beta-decay. The double beta-decay of48Ca is studied in detail. From the experimental data we conclude that |δ − 1| ≤3·10−6.

TL;DR: Data obtained by Nicholson (1957) on populations of Lucilia cuprina, by Shorrocks (1970) on population fluctuations in Drosophila melanogaster, and by Puntener on population size fluctuations inDrosophILA subolbscura are pointed out.
Abstract: It is a well-known phenomenon that there are fluctuations in the number of individuals in a population. This phenomenon arises sometimes in an irregular and unpredictable way, but at other times it is the result of some factors which can be measured. If the latter is the case, we could aim to analyze the fluctuations as well as the causes producing them. Many authors have worked on fluctuations caused by the interaction of two species (Lokta, 1925; Volterra, 1926; Nicholson and Bailey, 1935; and Utida, 1957). There are also data on fluctuations caused by intraspecific factors (Pratt, 1943; Myers and Krebs, 1974). We would like to point out, as they are of particular interest regarding our work, that data obtained by Nicholson (1957) on populations of Lucilia cuprina (studying how a species automatically adjusts its density in different places, and in the same places at different times, in relation to the prevailing environmental conditions), by Shorrocks (1970) on population fluctuations in Drosophila melanogaster (concerning the interaction of quantitative and qualitative changes in populations), and by Puntener (1972) on population size fluctuations in Drosophila subolbscura (investigation about the growth of genetically and chromosomally monomorphic and polymorphic populations, observing homeostatic effects and fluctuations of population size adapted to a sine curve).

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that given an initial minimum-uncertainty state $|z(ensuremath{\alpha})$ at time t = 0, the optimal trajectory of the minimum uncertainty state that maximizes the classical trajectory in phase space can be obtained.
Abstract: All the minimum-uncertainty states $|z(\ensuremath{\alpha})〉$ are built as the eigenstates of generalized annihilation operators $a(\ensuremath{\alpha})$. We obtain the most general Hamiltonian which verfies the following property: Given an initial minimum-uncertainty state $|z(\ensuremath{\alpha})〉$ at $t = 0$, the ${z}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ which corresponds to the minimum-uncertainty state that maximizes ${|〈{z}^{\ensuremath{'}}(\ensuremath{\alpha})|z(\ensuremath{\alpha}),t〉|}^{2}$ follows the classical trajectory in phase space. Finally, we comment on its relationship with the most general Hamiltonian which preserves minimality.

TL;DR: In this article, the problem of the very high lithium abundances found in some carbon stars is examined, and an alternative model, based on low-energy spallation reactions, is considered.
Abstract: The problem of the very high (approx.10/sup -7/) lithium abundances found in some carbon stars is examined. In view of the uncertainties still involved in the thermonuclear mechanisms so far proposed, an alternative model, based on low-energy spallation reactions, is considered. We find that the energetic requirements would always be easily fulfilled if the stellar atmospheres were static and in radiative equilibrium. The hydrodynamical effects (mass loss and convective mixing with the envelope) set, however, far more severe constraints: only in especially favorable cases could such abundances by maintained against the mass flow and still be preserved from dilution. Remaining uncertainties are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the helix-coil phase transition of DNA through a model equivalent to the one used in the theory of superconductivity, and obtained a distribution function for the excitations analogous to the usual Fermi function which depends on the parameter T0, the maximum temperature at which all pairs of bases are bonded.
Abstract: The helix–coil phase transition of DNA is studied through a model equivalent to the one used in the theory of superconductivity. A distribution function for the excitations analogous to the usual Fermi function is obtained which depends on the parameter T0, the maximum temperature at which all pairs of bases are bonded. The expression for the number of unbonded pairs of bases depends only on the two parameters, T0 and Tc (critical temperature).
