Coach Education and Continuing Professional Development: Experience and Learning to Coach

Abstract: Research over the last decade has demonstrated that it is experience and the observation of other coaches that remain the primary sources of knowledge for coaches. Despite this, coach education and continuing professional development fail to draw effectively on this experience. Using the work of Pierre Bourdieu, this paper attempts to understand how the “art of coaching” can be characterized as structured improvisation and how experience is crucial to structuring coaching practice. An examination of current coach education and assessment demonstrates that coaching practice viewed as a composite of knowledge has not specifically addressed the pervasive influence of experience on coaching practice. Drawing on experiences from the educational field, we examine how coach education and continuing professional development can utilize mentoring and critical reflection to situate learning in the practical experience of coaching.

The McKay correspondence as an equivalence of derived categories

Abstract: The classical McKay correspondence relates representations of a finite subgroup G ⊂ SL(2,C) to the cohomology of the well-known minimal resolution of the Kleinian singularity C2/G. Gonzalez-Sprinberg and Verdier [10] interpreted the McKay correspondence as an isomorphism on K theory, observing that the representation ring of G is equal to the G-equivariant K theory of C2. More precisely, they identify a basis of the K theory of the resolution consisting of the classes of certain tautological sheaves associated to the irreducible representations of G.

Combining motivational and volitional interventions to promote exercise participation: Protection motivation theory and implementation intentions

Abstract: Objective: This study compared a motivational intervention based on protection motivation theory (PMT, Rogers, 1975, 1983) with the same motivational intervention augmented by a volitional intervention based on implementation intentions (Gollwitzer, 1993) Design: The study had a longitudinal design, involving three waves of data collection over a 2-week period, incorporating an experimental manipulation of PMT variables at Time 1 and a volitional, implementation intention intervention at Time 2 Method: Participants (N=248) were randomly allocated to a control group or one of two intervention groups Cognitions and exercise behaviour were measured at three time-points over a 2-week period Results: The motivational intervention significantly increased threat and coping appraisal and intentions to engage in exercise but did not bring about a significant increase in subsequent exercise behaviour In contrast, the combined protection motivation theory/implementation intention intervention had a dramatic effect on subsequent exercise behaviour Thisvolitional intervention did not influence behavioural intention or any other motivational variables Conclusions: It is concluded that supplementing PMT with implementation intentions strengthens the ability of the model to explain behaviour This has implications for health education programmes, which should aim to increase both participants' motivation and their volition

A contingent resource-based perspective of supply chain resilience and robustness

Abstract: Understanding supply chain resilience and robustness is increasingly important for supply chain managers. This is due to the growing complexity of contemporary supply chains and the subsequent increased probability of experiencing a disruption. Few studies within the risk management literature have empirically disentangled the concepts of resilience and robustness or explored their antecedents. This study utilizes a contingent resource-based view perspective to understand the relationship between specific resources (information sharing and connectivity), capabilities (visibility), and performance in terms of supply chain resilience and robustness. In addition, it utilizes supply base complexity as a moderating factor. Survey data collected from 264 UK manufacturing plants suggest that supply chain connectivity and information sharing resources lead to a supply chain visibility capability which enhances resilience and robustness. Of the four dimensions of complexity, only scale is found to have a strong moderating effect on this relationship, while geographic dispersion, differentiation, and delivery complexity do not have contingent effects. This study highlights theoretical and managerial implications for approaches to resilience and robustness.
