Abstract: Small sedimentary basins that formed on the Apennine (southern) margin of the Po basin complex, northern Italy, have been studied using borehole and seismic-reflection information, and their evolution can be dated using the largely marine biostratigraphy of the Miocene to Quaternary sediments. These studies show that the basins formed and were filled while being carried on moving thrust sheets, and they are therefore named piggyback basins. Each of these basins corresponds to the active phase of a different thrust-front ramp. On the Pyrenean (northern) margin of the Ebro basin complex, northern Spain, similar piggyback basins formed between Eocene and mid-Miocene time. They have since been uplifted and eroded and may therefore be studied in outcrop. In northern Spain, much of the basin-fill sediment was deposited in nonmarine environments.

TL;DR: Radiation therapy effected a clinical cure in three cases; the authors believe that radiation therapy has to be used only in inoperable tumors.
Abstract: Ninety cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of bone are reported. An analysis is presented with regard to sex, age, site, symptoms, radiography, macroscopic, and microscopic features. The staging was assessed according to the following classification: I B: 3 cases; II A: 11 cases; II B: 66 cases; III: 10 cases. Among nonmetastatic patients, 68 had surgical treatment (adequate, 46; inadequate, 22); 8 had radiotherapy, and 3 refused any treatment. Among surgically treated patients, 20 had adjuvant chemotherapy, also. Follow-up information was obtained in all cases. Overall survival rates were 34% at 5 years, and 28% at 10 years. Surgery alone did not appear to be successful (5-year survival, 28%). Adjuvant chemotherapy improved the survival rate only in patients who underwent adequate surgery (5-year survival, 57%). The recurrence rate after surgical treatment was high (31%) with significant differences after inadequate (64%), wide (19%), or radical (6.5%) surgical treatment. Adjuvant chemotherapy was ineffective in preventing local recurrence. Radiation therapy effected a clinical cure in three cases; the authors believe that radiation therapy has to be used only in inoperable tumors.

Abstract: This article was first planned in 1976. It owes its existence to Pierluigi Petrobelli who, charged with organising a round table on seventeenth-century music drama for the Twelfth Congress of the International Musicological Society, Berkeley 1977, invited the authors to prepare a paper as a focus for discussion and offered them constant encouragement throughout its preparatory stages. It is our pleasant duty to mention that during the time of preparation of the paper Lorenzo Bianconi held scholarships from the Centro Tedesco di Studi Veneziani and the Istituto Storico Germanico of Rome.

Abstract: Summary. A systematic study of deep seismicity is performed using waveform data from the GDSN between 1977 and 1980 and the Centroid Moment Tensor method of Dziewonski et al. Two hundred new CMT solutions are found for events deeper than 100km; their moments, obtained using the same algorithm, range between 7 x and 1.4 x lo2' dyne cm - a factor of 20 000. A statistical analysis of the CMT parameters provides important conclusions. Among these, the shift in origin time for deep events is found to be almost independent of the seismic moment, providing an indication of the complexity of deep earthquakes. The deviation from the double couple model appears to be correlated to the state of stress of the subducting slabs; mechanisms showing down-dip compression are generally dominated by the eigenvalue corresponding to the compression axis, and down-dip tension correlates with the predominance of the tensional eigenvalue. Comparison with moment tensors obtained by other authors using different waveform data shows good agreement between different methods. Comparison with published focal plane mechanisms confirms the precision and reliability of the CMT method. Examples of CMT solutions used to identify patterns of seismicity associated with deep fault planes are shown.

TL;DR: In 6 patients with RLS, a randomized double‐blind cross‐over trial vs placebo showed a significant efficacy of clonazepam in improving subjective quality of sleep and leg dysaesthesia.
Abstract: There have been no controlled therapeutic trials in Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS). In 6 patients with RLS, a randomized double-blind cross-over trial vs placebo showed a significant efficacy of clonazepam in improving subjective quality of sleep and leg dysaesthesia. Vibratory stimulation of the leg showed a less pronounced and non-significant effect. Clonazepam is a safe and effective drug for treatment of RLS; however its long-term efficacy needs confirmation.

TL;DR: Four experiments explored the effect of fight/left cues on the spatial compatibility effects of the above/below and near/far dimensions, and showed reliable compatibility effects for both dimensions, although they were apparently much stronger for the right/left one.
Abstract: Four experiments explored the effect of fight/left cues on the spatial compatibility effects of the above/below and near/far dimensions. Experiment 1, in which stimuli and responses were positioned either above or below a central reference location, showed a strong spatial compatibility effect. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 with the exception that right/left cues, incongruent with the above/below ones, were added. Compatibility proved to be stronger along the right/left dimension. In Experiment 3, near/far was the dimension according to which the cues were defined while the right/left dimension provided competing cues. Again, spatial compatibility was stronger along the right/left dimension. In Experiment 4, as in Experiment 2, the spatial cues involved the above/below and right/left dimensions. This time, the experimental procedure was such as to allow the competing spatial cues to vary independently and orthogonally. The results showed reliable compatibility effects for both dimensions, although they were apparently much stronger for the right/left one. Such findings are discussed with reference to the prevailing hypotheses proposed to explain S-R compatibility and the right/left confusion phenomenon observed in locational-discrimination tasks.

TL;DR: The results confirm that splenosis occurs in adults, though less often than in children, and suggest that when splenic tissue is to be implanted a graft of at least 20-30 cm3 is needed to ensure satisfactory return of splenic function.
Abstract: Ninety patients whose spleen had been removed either because of trauma (41 cases) or as an elective procedure (49) were investigated for return of splenic function by counting pitted red cells and examining spleen scans made after injection of heat damaged 99mTc labelled red cells. There was no significant difference in the proportion of pitted red cells between the two groups of patients. Evidence of splenic tissue in scintiscans was not invariably associated with low pitted red cell values, suggesting that the presence of splenic tissue did not necessarily mean return of splenic function. In every patient whose proportion of pitted red cells was less than 16.2% the scintiscan showed splenic uptake. The proportion of patients with pitted red cell values below 16.2% was significantly higher in the group operated on for trauma, and it is concluded that this was due to splenosis. A high inverse correlation between pitted red cell counts and computed splenic volumes was found. Patients with pitted red cell values of less than 16.2% had computed volumes of 22-133 cm3; below this range the proportion of pitted red cells rose very sharply. These results confirm that splenosis occurs in adults, though less often than in children, and suggest that when splenic tissue is to be implanted a graft of at least 20-30 cm3 is needed to ensure satisfactory return of splenic function.

TL;DR: The data underline the limitations of relying on a single drug level determination during the monitoring of carbamazepine therapy and emphasize the necessity of carefully adjusting the dosing schedule, to minimize the appearance of intermittent adverse effects.
Abstract: The relationship between diurnal fluctuations in free (unbound) and total plasma carbamazepine levels and the appearance of intermittent side effects was investigated in nine epileptic patients receiving chronic therapy with carbamazepine, alone or in combination with phenobarbital. On a three-times-daily or four-times-daily dosing schedule, both total and free carbamazepine levels fluctuated considerably (on an average, 41 and 45%, respectively, around the mean). Side effects (particularly diplopia and nystagmus) were observed in five patients and showed an intermittent pattern in four. Side effects were never found at total carbamazepine levels less than 34 mumol/L but invariably appeared at levels greater than 38 mumol/L. At levels between 34 and 38 mumol/L adverse effects were inconsistently observed. The correlation between plasma carbamazepine levels and manifestations of toxicity was slightly stronger when free rather than total levels were considered. Side effects were always apparent at free levels greater than 7.2 mumol/L. These data underline the limitations of relying on a single drug level determination during the monitoring of carbamazepine therapy and emphasize the necessity of carefully adjusting the dosing schedule, to minimize the appearance of intermittent adverse effects.

TL;DR: In this article, the intrinsic partition coefficient in octanol/water was defined and the structure of arylaliphatic acids in DMSO/H2O was discussed.
Abstract: pka-values of some anti-inflammatory arylaliphatic acids were measured potentiometrically in DMSO/H2O (80% w/w). The values were confirmed by assessing the solubility of the acids as a function of the pH of the aqueous solutions. In this way, the intrinsic partition coefficient in octanol/water was defined. The discussion deals with the structure and reviews the few data available in the literature.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the Cauchy problem for non-linear Schrodinger equations in space time dimension n + 1 and proved the existence of global solutions for n ≤ 7.
Abstract: We study the Cauchy problem for a class of non linear Schrodinger equations in space time dimension n + 1. We look for solutions which are continuous functions of time with values in the Sobolev space H k (ℝ n ), k > n /2. Under suitable assumptions on the interactions, we prove in particular the existence of global solutions for n ≤ 7. The global existence proof breaks down for n ≥ 8.

TL;DR: In spite of a possible loss of therapeutic activity, the appearance of very few unfavorable side effects and the presence of favorable side effects make clobazam therapy important in the treatment of patients suffering from startle epilepsy.
Abstract: The present study was undertaken in order to describe 16 more patients suffering from startle-induced epileptic seizures and to clarify further the possible therapeutic activity of benzodiazepines in this rare reflex epilepsy. The interictal and ictal electroclinical data of 16 epileptic children or adolescents have been detailed. A CT-scan was performed in 10 patients; six of them showed an atrophy of the mesial surface of one or both hemispheres ("mesial hypodensity"). Benzodiazepine was associated with the previous antiepileptic treatment in the 16 ineffectively treated patients. Clonazepam was administered in three patients; one of them was completely unresponsive and two became seizure-free for a mean of 16.5 months but complained of drowsiness or ataxia. Clobazam was administered in 13 patients; 15.4% of them were completely unresponsive, 23.1% experienced drug resistance, and 61.5% obtained a good control (91.5% reduction of the reflex seizures) for a mean of 22.75 months. In spite of a possible loss of therapeutic activity, the appearance of very few unfavorable side effects and the presence of favorable side effects ("psychomotor arousal") make clobazam therapy important in the treatment of patients suffering from startle epilepsy.

TL;DR: In this article, a mixed approach of depth-first search-dynamic programming (DFLP) and the Ahrens-Finke algorithm was proposed to solve the Subset-Sum Problem (SSP).
Abstract: Given n items, each having a weight wi, and a container of capacity W, the Subset-Sum ProblemSSP is to select a subset of the items whose total weight is closest to, without exceeding, W. The paper presents a mixed approach depth first search-dynamic programming to the exact solution of the problem. An extensive computational experience is presented, comparing the proposed algorithm with that of Ahrens-Finke, as well as with the Balas-Zemel algorithm for large problems. Both "easy" and "hard" problems with values of n up to 10,000 are considered.

TL;DR: In this paper, a quasar candidate spectroscopic UV-excess survey with B less than 19.80 has yielded 35 quasars in the 1.75 sq deg region studied.
Abstract: A quasar candidate spectroscopic UV-excess survey with B less than 19.80 has yielded 35 quasars in the 1.75 sq deg region studied. The X-ray data for the 35 quasars are used to show that quasars with B lower than 19.80 and z lower than 2.2 constitute 24 + 10, -8 percent of the observed X-ray background at 2 keV. This sample is combined with one containing 22 quasars with B values lower than 18.25, and it is noted that fits of evolution and luminosity functions are substantially similar to previous results, although the confidence limits for the model parameters are reduced by a factor of 2. Pure luminosity evolution models are found to produce very good fits to the observed N(less than B) data, and are used to estimate the overall contribution of quasars to the X-ray background.
