Abstract: We develop a method for interpreting faint galaxy data which focuses on the integrated light radiated from the galaxy population as a whole. The emission history of the universe at ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared wavelengths is modeled from the present epoch to z ≈ 4 by tracing the evolution with cosmic time of the galaxy luminosity density, as determined from several deep spectroscopic samples and the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) imaging survey. In a q0 = 0.5, h50 = 1 cosmology, the global spectrophotometric properties of field galaxies can be well fitted by a simple stellar evolution model, defined by a time-dependent star formation rate (SFR) per unit comoving volume and a universal initial mass function (IMF) extending from 0.1 to 125 M☉. While a Salpeter IMF with a modest amount of dust reddening or a somewhat steeper mass function, (m) m-2.7, can both reproduce the data reasonably well, a Scalo IMF produces too much long-wavelength light and is unable to match the observed mean galaxy colors. In the best-fit models, the global SFR rises sharply, by about an order of magnitude, from a redshift of zero to a peak value at z ≈ 1.5 in the range 0.12-0.17 M☉ yr-1 Mpc-3, to fall again at higher redshifts. After integrating the inferred star formation rate over cosmic time, we find a stellar mass density at the present epoch of Ω -->s h -->2500.005, hence a mean stellar mass-to-light ratio 4 in the B-band and 1 in K, consistent with the values observed in nearby galaxies of various morphological types. The models are able to account for the entire background light recorded in the galaxy counts down to the very faint magnitude levels probed by the HDF. Since only ~20% of the current stellar content of galaxies is produced at z > 2, a rather low cosmic metallicity is expected at these early times, in good agreement with the observed enrichment history of the damped Lyα systems. The biggest uncertainty is represented by the poorly constrained amount of starlight that was absorbed by dust and reradiated in the IR at early epochs. A monolithic collapse model, where half of the present-day stars formed at z > 2.5 and were shrouded by dust, can be made consistent with the global history of light, but overpredicts the metal mass density at high redshifts as sampled by quasi-stellar object absorbers.

Abstract: Data warehousing systems enable enterprise managers to acquire and integrate information from heterogeneous sources and to query very large databases efficiently. Building a data warehouse requires adopting design and implementation techniques completely different from those underlying operational information systems. Though most scientific literature on the design of data warehouses concerns their logical and physical models, an accurate conceptual design is the necessary foundations for building a DW which is well-documented and fully satisfies requirements. In this paper we formalize a graphical conceptual model for data warehouses, called Dimensional Fact model, and propose a semi-automated methodology to build it from the pre-existing (conceptual or logical) schemes describing the enterprise relational database. Abstract: This paper reviews the work carried out under the European ACTS KEOPS (KEys to Optical Packet Switching) project, centering on the definition, development and assessment of optical packet switching and routing networks capable of providing transparency to the payload bit rate. The adopted approach uses optical packets of fixed duration with low bit rate headers to facilitate processing at the network/node interfaces. The paper concentrates on the networking concepts developed in the KEOPS project through a description of the implementation issues pertinent to optical packet switching nodes and network/node interfacing blocks, and consideration of the network functionalities provided within the optical packet layer. The implementation, from necessity, relies on advanced optoelectronic components specifically developed within the project, which are also briefly described.

Abstract: A new tool for the evolutionary synthesis of stellar populations is presented, which is based on three independent matrices, giving respectively (1) the fuel consumption during each evolutionary phase as a function of stellar mass, (2) the typical temperatures and gravities during such phases, and (3) the colours and bolometric corrections as functions of gravity and temperature. The modular structure of the code allows one easily to assess the impact on the synthetic spectral energy distribution of the various assumptions and model ingredients, such as, for example, uncertainties in stellar evolutionary models, the mixing length, the temperature distribution of horizontal branch stars, asymptotic giant branch mass loss, and colour–temperature transformations. The so-called ‘AGB phase transition’ in Magellanic Cloud clusters is used to calibrate the contribution of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase to the synthetic integrated luminosity. As an illustrative example, solar-metallicity (Y = 0.27, Z = 0.02) models, with ages ranging between 30 Myr and 15 Gyr and various choices for the slope of the initial mass function, are presented. Synthetic broad-band colours and the luminosity contributions of the various evolutionary stages are compared with Large Magellanic Cloud and Galactic globular cluster data. In all these cases, a good agreement is found. Finally, the evolution is presented of stellar mass-to-light ratios in the bolometric and UBVRK passbands, in which the contribution of stellar remnants is accounted for.

Abstract: AIM: To assess a newly developed immunohistochemical detection system, the EnVision++. METHODS: A large series of differently processed normal and pathological samples and 53 relevant monoclonal antibodies were chosen. A chessboard titration assay was used to compare the results provided by the EnVision++ system with those of the APAAP, CSA, LSAB, SABC, and ChemMate methods, when applied either manually or in a TechMate 500 immunostainer. RESULTS: With the vast majority of the antibodies, EnVision++ allowed two- to fivefold higher dilutions than the APAAP, LSAB, SABC, and ChemMate techniques, the staining intensity and percentage of expected positive cells being the same. With some critical antibodies (such as the anti-CD5), it turned out to be superior in that it achieved consistently reproducible results with differently fixed or overfixed samples. Only the CSA method, which includes tyramide based enhancement, allowed the same dilutions as the EnVision++ system, and in one instance (with the anti-cyclin D1 antibody) represented the gold standard. CONCLUSIONS: The EnVision++ is an easy to use system, which avoids the possibility of disturbing endogenous biotin and lowers the cost per test by increasing the dilutions of the primary antibodies. Being a two step procedure, it reduces both the assay time and the workload.

Abstract: Background. There is increasing awareness of the prognostic value of residual symptomatology in affective disorders and of the need for specific therapeutic strategies in this phase of illness. The aims of the study were to apply a novel, short-term psychotherapeutic approach for increasing well-being, based on Ryff's conceptual model, to remitted patients with affective disorders and to compare the results with those obtained with symptom-oriented cognitive behavioural strategies.Methods. Twenty patients with affective disorders (major depression, panic disorder with agoraphobia, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive–compulsive disorder) who had been successfully treated by behavioural or pharmacological methods were randomly assigned to a well-being enhancing therapeutic strategy (well-being therapy) or cognitive–behavioural treatment of residual symptoms.Results. Both well-being and cognitive–behavioural therapies were associated with a significant reduction of residual symptoms. However, a significant advantage of well-being therapy over cognitive–behavioural strategies was observed with observer-rated methods.Discussion. These preliminary results suggest the feasibility of well-being therapy in the residual stage of affective disorders. Further research should determine its value as a relapse-preventive strategy in specific mood and anxiety disorders.

Abstract: Linkage maps for the apple cultivars ‘Prima’ and ‘Fiesta’ were constructed using RFLP, RAPD, isozyme, AFLP, SCAR and microsatellite markers in a ‘Prima’בFiesta’ progeny of 152 individuals. Seventeen linkage groups, putatively corresponding to the seventeen haploid apple chromosomes, were obtained for each parent. These maps were aligned using 67 multi-allelic markers that were heterozygous in both parents. A large number of duplicate RFLP loci was observed and, in several instances, linked RFLP markers in one linkage group showed corresponding linkage in another linkage group. Distorted segregation was observed mainly in two regions of the genome, especially in the male parent alleles. Map positions were provided for resistance genes to scab and rosy leaf curling aphid (Vf and Sd 1, respectively) for the fruit acidity gene Ma and for the self-incompatibility locus S. The high marker density and large number of mapped codominant RFLPs and some microsatellite markers make this map an ideal reference map for use in other progenies also and a valuable tool for the mapping of quantitative trait loci.

Abstract: This paper reviews the work carried out in the ACTS KEOPS (Keys to Optical Packet Switching) project, describing the results obtained to date. The main objective of the project is the definition, development, and assessment of optical packet switching and routing networks, capable of providing transparency to the payload bit rate, using optical packets of fixed duration and low bit rate headers in order to enable easier processing at the network/node interfaces. The feasibility of the KEOPS concept is assessed by modeling, laboratory experiments, and testbed implementation of optical packet switching nodes and network/node interfacing blocks, including a fully equipped demonstrator. The demonstration relies on advanced optoelectronic components, developed within the project, which are described.

We present a graphical conceptual model for data warehouses, called Dimensional Fact model, and propose a semi-automated methodology to build it from the pre-existing entity/relationship schemes describing a database. Our conceptual model consists of tree-structured fact schemes whose basic elements are facts, attributes, dimensions and hierarchies; other features which may be represented on fact schemes are the additivity of fact attributes along dimensions, the optionality of dimension attributes and the existence of non-dimension attributes. Compatible fact schemes may be overlapped in order to relate and compare data. Fact schemes may be integrated with information of the conjectured workload, expressed in terms of query patterns, to be used as the input of a design phase whose output are the logical and physical schemes of the data warehouse.

Abstract: Superior area 6 of the macaque monkey frontal cortex is formed by two cytoarchitectonic areas: F2 and F7. In the present experiment, we studied the input from the superior parietal lobule (SPL) to these areas by injecting retrograde neural tracers into restricted parts of F2 and F7. Additional injections of retrograde tracers were made into the spinal cord to define the origin of corticospinal projections from the SPL. The results are as follows: 1) The part of F2 located around the superior precentral dimple (F2 dimple region) receives its main input from areas PEc and PEip (PE intraparietal, the rostral part of area PEa of Pandya and Seltzer, [1982] J. Comp. Neurol. 204:196-210). Area PEip was defined as that part of area PEa that is the source of corticospinal projections. 2) The ventrorostral part of F2 is the target of strong projections from the medial intraparietal area (area MIP) and from the dorsal part of the anterior wall of the parietooccipital sulcus (area V6A). 3) The ventral and caudal parts of F7 receive their main parietal input from the cytoarchitectonic area PGm of the SPL and from the posterior cingulate cortex. 4) The dorsorostral part of F7, which is also known as the supplementary eye field, is not a target of the SPL, but it receives mostly afferents from the inferior parietal lobule and from the temporal cortex. It is concluded that at least three separate parietofrontal circuits link the superior parietal lobule with the superior area 6. Considering the functional properties of the areas that form these circuits, it is proposed that the PEc/PEip-F2 dimple region circuit is involved in controlling movements on the basis of somatosensory information, which is the traditional role proposed for the whole dorsal premotor cortex. The two remaining circuits appear to be involved in different aspects of visuomotor transformations.

Abstract: The ability of interleukin (IL)-12 to prevent tumors when administered to individuals with a genetic risk of cancer was studied in two lines of transgenic mice expressing rat HER-2/neu oncogene in the mammary gland. Female BALB/c (H-2d) mice carrying the activated HER-2/ neu oncogene show no morphological abnormalities of the mammary gland until 3 wk of age. They then progress through atypical hyperplasia to in situ lobular carcinoma and at 33 wk of age all 10 mammary glands display invasive carcinomas. Adult FVB mice (H-2q) carrying the HER-2/neu protooncogene develop mammary carcinomas with a longer latency (38-49 wk) and a lower multiplicity (mean of 2.6 tumors/mice). Treatment with IL-12 (5 daily intraperitoneal injections, 1 wk on, 3 wk off; the first course with 50 ng IL-12/day, the second with 100 ng IL-12/day) begun at 2 wk of age in BALB/c mice and at 21 wk of age in FVB mice markedly delayed tumor onset and reduced tumor multiplicity. Analogous results were obtained in immunocompetent and permanently CD8+ T lymphocyte–depleted mice. In both transgenic lines, tumor inhibition was associated with mammary infiltration of reactive cells, production of cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase, and reduction in microvessel number, in combination with a high degree of hemorrhagic necrosis.

Abstract: Central Asia is a vast region at the crossroads of different habitats, cultures, and trade routes. Little is known about the genetics and the history of the population of this region. We present the analysis of mtDNA control-region sequences in samples of the Kazakh, the Uighurs, the lowland Kirghiz, and the highland Kirghiz, which we have used to address both the population history of the region and the possible selective pressures that high altitude has on mtDNA genes. Central Asian mtDNA sequences present features intermediate between European and eastern Asian sequences, in several parameters-such as the frequencies of certain nucleotides, the levels of nucleotide diversity, mean pairwise differences, and genetic distances. Several hypotheses could explain the intermediate position of central Asia between Europe and eastern Asia, but the most plausible would involve extensive levels of admixture between Europeans and eastern Asians in central Asia, possibly enhanced during the Silk Road trade and clearly after the eastern and western Eurasian human groups had diverged. Lowland and highland Kirghiz mtDNA sequences are very similar, and the analysis of molecular variance has revealed that the fraction of mitochondrial genetic variance due to altitude is not significantly different from zero. Thus, it seems unlikely that altitude has exerted a major selective pressure on mitochondrial genes in central Asian populations.

Abstract: A mathematical model of short-term arterial pressure control by the carotid baroreceptors in pulsatile conditions is presented. The model includes an elastance variable description of the left and right heart, the systemic (splanchnic and extrasplanchnic) and pulmonary circulations, the afferent carotid baroreceptor pathway, the sympathetic and vagal efferent activities, and the action of several effector mechanisms. The latter mechanisms work, in response to sympathetic and vagal action, by modifying systemic peripheral resistances, systemic venous unstressed volumes, heart period, and end-systolic elastances. The model is used to simulate the interaction among the carotid baroreflex, the pulsating heart, and the effector responses in different experiments. In all cases, there has been satisfactory agreement between model and experimental results. Experimental data on heart rate control can be explained fairly well by assuming that the sympathetic-parasympathetic systems interact linearly on the heart period. The carotid baroreflex can significantly modulate the cardiac function curve. However, this effect is masked in vivo by changes in arterial and atrial pressures. During heart pacing, cardiac output increases with frequency at moderate levels of heart rate and then fails to increase further because of a reduction in stroke volume. Shifting from nonpulsatile to pulsatile perfusion of the carotid sinuses decreases the overall baroreflex gain and significantly modifies operation of the carotid baroreflex. Finally, a sensitivity analysis suggests that venous unstressed volume control plays the major role in the early hemodynamic response to acute hemorrhage, whereas systemic resistance and heart rate controls are a little less important.

Abstract: Background The possibility that calcium antagonists exert an anti-atherosclerotic action at least partly independently of the blood-pressure-lowering effect is supported by results of a large number of experimental studies and can now be investigated by quantitative B-mode ultrasound imagining of the carotid artery walls. Design The European Lacidipine Study on Atherosclerosis (ELSA) is a prospective, randomized, double-blind, multinational trial comparing effects of 4-year treatment based on the long-acting, highly lipophilic calcium antagonist lacidipine with those of treatment based on the β-blocker atenolol on the development of carotid artery wall alterations in patients (aged 45-75 years) with mild-to-moderate hypertension (systolic blood pressure 150-210 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure 95-115 mmHg). While the intervention study is progressing, this article summarizes baseline data obtained from the whole cohort of 2259 patients randomly allocated to treatment Methods Baseline ultrasound data were obtained from two replicate examinations performed shortly before random allocation to treatment by certified sonographers at 23 referral centres and read at the ultrasound coordinating centre at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Intima-media thickness was measured at up to 12 different sites in the carotid artery tree and expressed as the mean of the maxima at these sites (M max ), the mean of the maxima at four sites in the distal common carotid artery and bifurcation (CBM max ) and the maximum intima-media thickness (T max ). Baseline demographic and clinical measurements were performed by investigators in 410 peripheral clinical units and 24 h ambulatory blood pressure monitorings read and validated by members of a centralized unit at the University of Milan. The statistical analysis centre at the Technische Universitat Munchen received and analysed all baseline data, by calculating means ± SD, medians and ranges and performing correlation (Spearman correlation coefficients) and multiple regression analyses. Results Prevalence of carotid artery wall alterations among the hypertensive patients randomly allocated to treatment in the ELSA was very high: 82% had T max ≥ 1.3 mm ('plaques' according to protocol) and 17% had T max ≥ 1.0 and <1.3 mm ('thickening'), with a median of two plaques per patient We found significant correlations between ultrasound measurements and the following demographic and clinical variables: age, sex, systolic blood pressure and pulse pressure (both clinic and ambulatory), concentrations of total, high-density lipoprotein and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides, smoking habit and duration of hypertension. We found no significant correlation to diastolic blood pressure and glucose concentration. A multiple regression analysis indicated significant variables in the following rank order: age, 24 h ambulatory pulse pressure, sex, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentration, triglyceride concentration, smoking and clinic systolic blood pressure. Conclusions Analysis of baseline data from the ELSA has shown that there is an extremely marked prevalence of carotid artery wall alterations among mild-to-moderate, middle-aged hypertensive patients.

Abstract: We report on the functional cloning of a hitherto unknown member of the immunoglobulin (Ig) superfamily selected for its ability to confer susceptibility to herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection on a highly resistant cell line (J1.1-2 cells), derived by exposure of BHKtk− cells to a recombinant HSV-1 expressing tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α). The sequence of herpesvirus Ig-like receptor (HIgR) predicts a transmembrane protein with an ectodomain consisting of three cysteine-bracketed domains, one V-like and two C-like. HIgR shares its ectodomain with and appears to be an alternative splice variant of the previously described protein PRR-1 (poliovirus receptor-related protein). Both HIgR and PRR-1 conferred on J1.1-2 cells susceptibility to HSV-1, HSV-2, and bovine herpesvirus 1. The viral ligand of HIgR and PRR-1 is glycoprotein D, a constituent of the virion envelope long known to mediate viral entry into cells through interaction with cellular receptor molecules. Recently, PRR-1, renamed HveC (herpesvirus entry mediator C), and the related PRR-2, renamed HveB, were reported to mediate the entry of HSV-1, HSV-2, and bovine herpesvirus 1, and the homologous poliovirus receptor was reported to mediate the entry of pseudorabies virus (R. J. Geraghty, C. Krummenacher, G. H. Cohen, R. J. Eisenberg, and P. G. Spear, Science 280:1618–1620, 1998; M. S. Warner, R. J. Geraghty, W. M. Martinez, R. I. Montgomery, J. C. Whitbeck, R. Xu, R. J. Eisenberg, G. H. Cohen, and P. G. Spear, Virology 246:179–189, 1998). Here we further show that HIgR or PRR-1 proteins detected by using a monoclonal antibody to PRR-1 are widely distributed among human cell lines susceptible to HSV infection and commonly used for HSV studies. The monoclonal antibody neutralized virion infectivity in cells transfected with HIgR or PRR-1 cDNA, as well as in the human cell lines, indicating a direct interaction of virions with the receptor molecule, and preliminarily mapping this function to the ectodomain of HIgR and PRR-1. Northern blot analysis showed that HIgR or PRR-1 mRNAs were expressed in human tissues, with the highest expression being detected in nervous system samples. HIgR adds a novel member to the cluster of Ig superfamily members able to mediate the entry of alphaherpesviruses into cells. The wide distribution of HIgR or PRR-1 proteins among human cell lines susceptible to HSV infection, coupled with the neutralizing activity of the antibody in the same cells, provides direct demonstration of the actual use of this cluster of molecules as HSV-1 and HSV-2 entry receptors in human cell lines. The high level of expression in samples from nervous system makes the use of these proteins in human tissues very likely. This cluster of molecules may therefore be considered to constitute bona fide receptors for HSV-1 and HSV-2.

Abstract: Dynamic power management schemes (also called policies) can be used to control the power consumption levels of electronic systems, by setting their components in different states, each characterized by a performance level and a power consumption. In this paper, we describe power-managed systems using a finite-state, stochastic model. Furthermore, we show that the fundamental problem of finding an optimal policy which maximizes the average performance level of a system, subject to a constraint on the power consumption, can be formulated as a stochastic optimization problem called policy optimization. Policy optimization can be solved exactly in polynomial time (in the number of states of the model). We implemented a policy optimization tool and tested the quality of the optimal policies on a realistic case study.

The neutral TTF unit resides "inside" the tetracationic cyclophane in the reduced state and "alongside" it in the oxidized species (TTF+ / TTF2+ ). Abstract: The t(2;5)(p23;q35) translocation associated with CD30-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma results in the production of a NPM-ALK chimeric protein, consisting of the N-terminal portion of the NPM protein joined to the entire cytoplasmic domain of the neural receptor tyrosine kinase ALK. The ALK gene products were identified in paraffm sections by using a new anti-ALK (cytoplasmic portion) monoclonal antibody (ALKc) that tends to react more strongly than a previously described ALK1 antibody with the nuclei of ALK-expressing tumor cells after microwave heating in 1 mmol/L ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid buffer, pH 8.0. The ALKc monoclonal antibody reacted selectively with 60% of anaplastic large cell lymphoma cases (60 of 100), which occurred mainly in the first three decades of life and consistently displayed a T/null phenotype. This group of ALK-positive tumors showed a wide morphological spectrum including cases with features of anaplastic large cell lymphoma "common" type (75%), "lymphohistiocytic" (10%), "small cell" (8.3%), "giant cell" (3.3%), and "Hodgkin's like" (3.3%). CD30-positive large anaplastic cells expressing the ALK protein both in the cytoplasm and nucleus represented the dominant tumor population in the common, Hodgkin's-like and giant cell types, but they were present at a smaller percentage (often with a perivascular distribution) also in cases with lymphohistiocytic and small cell features. In this study, the ALKc antibody also allowed us to identify small neoplastic cells (usually CD30 negative) with nucleus-restricted ALK positivity that were, by definition, more evident in the small cell variant but were also found in cases with lymphohistiocytic, common, and "Hodgkin's-like" features. These findings, which have not been previously emphasized, strongly suggest that the neoplastic lesion (the NPM-ALK gene) must be present both in the large anaplastic and small tumor cells, and that ALK-positive lymphomas lie on a spectrum, their position being defined by the ratio of small to large neoplastic cells. Notably, about 15% of all ALK-positive lymphomas (usually of the common or giant cell variant) showed a cytoplasm-restricted ALK positivity, which suggests that the ALK gene may have fused with a partner(s) other than NPM. From a diagnostic point of view, detection of the ALK protein was useful in distinguishing anaplastic large cell lymphoma cases of lymphohistiocytic and small cell variants from reactive conditions and other peripheral T-cell lymphoma subtypes, as well as for detecting a small number of tumor cells in lymphohemopoietic tissues. In conclusion, ALK positivity appears to define a clinicopathological entity with a T/null phenotype ("ALK lymphomas"), but one that shows a wider spectrum of morphological patterns than has been appreciated in the past.

Abstract: We have observed bottom-charm mesons via the decay mode B{sub c}{sup {+-}}{yields}J/{psi}{ell}{sup {+-}}v in 1.8 TeV p{ovr p}collisions using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. A fit of background and signal contributions to the J/{psi}{ell} mass distribution yielded 20.4{sub -5.5}{sup +6.2} events from B{sub c} mesons. A fit to the same distribution with background alone was rejected at the level of 4.8 standard deviations. We measured the B{sub c}{sup +} mass to be 6.40{+-}0.39(stat){+-}0.13(syst) GeV/c{sup 2} and the B{sub c}{sup +} lifetime to be 0.46{sub -0.16}{sup +0.18}(stat){+-}0.03(syst) ps. Our measured yield (production cross section times branching ratio) for B{sub c}{sup +}{yields}J/{psi}{ell}{sup +}v relative to that for B{sup +}{yields}J/{psi} K{sup +} is 0.132{sub -0.037}{sup +0.041}(stat){+-}0.031(syst){sub -0.020}{sup +0.032}(lifetime).

Abstract: OBJECTIVE To evaluate the sites of expression of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in patients with inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases. METHODS Cytokines and iNOS were detected by immunohistochemistry analysis of synovial and cartilage biopsy specimens obtained at knee arthroscopy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), osteoarthritis (OA), and traumatic knee arthritis. Cytokine and iNOS expression was quantified using computerized image analysis. RESULTS IL-1beta, TNFalpha, and iNOS were highly expressed by synovial cells (lining layer cells, infiltrating leukocytes, endothelial cells) from patients with inflammatory arthritides and significantly less by synovial cells from patients with OA and traumatic arthritis. In contrast, the latter patients showed high chondrocyte expression of cytokines and iNOS while RA and PsA patients had only minor chondrocyte positivity. In both joint compartments, IL-1beta expression, TNFalpha expression, and iNOS expression were strongly correlated. CONCLUSION The enhanced and coordinated expression of IL-1beta, TNFalpha, and iNOS by chondrocytes strongly supports the hypothesis that chondrocytes are the major site of production of mediators of inflammation in human OA, thus playing a primary role in the pathogenesis of this disease.

Abstract: Though designing a data warehouse requires techniques completely different from those adopted for operational systems, no significant effort has been made so far to develop a complete and consistent design methodology for data warehouses. In this paper we outline a general methodological framework for data warehouse design, based on our Dimensional Fact Model (DFM). After analyzing the existing information system and collecting the user requirements, conceptual design is carried out semi-automatically starting from the operational database scheme. A workload is then characterized in terms of data volumes and expected queries, to be used as the input of the logical and physical design phases whose output is the final scheme for the data warehouse.
