TL;DR: The computational results show that the LP-relaxation of the two-stage optimization problem can be solved in a short time for a representative number of disruption scenarios, and it is demonstrated that the robust rolling stock circulation computed heuristically has total costs that are close to the LP lower bounds.
Abstract: In this paper we describe a two-stage optimization model for determining robust rolling stock circulations for passenger trains. Here robustness means that the rolling stock circulations can better deal with large disruptions of the railway system. The two-stage optimization model is formulated as a large mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. We first use Benders decomposition to determine optimal solutions for the LP-relaxation of this model. Then we use the cuts that were generated by the Benders decomposition for computing heuristic robust solutions for the two-stage optimization model. We call our method Benders heuristic. We evaluate our approach on the real-life rolling stock-planning problem of Netherlands Railways, the main operator of passenger trains in the Netherlands. The computational results show that, thanks to Benders decomposition, the LP-relaxation of the two-stage optimization problem can be solved in a short time for a representative number of disruption scenarios. In addition, they demonstrate that the robust rolling stock circulation computed heuristically has total costs that are close to the LP lower bounds. Finally, we discuss the practical effectiveness of the robust rolling stock circulation: When a large number of disruption scenarios were applied to these robust circulations and to the nonrobust optimal circulations, the former appeared to be much more easily recoverable than the latter.

TL;DR: It is found that the limbic thalamus has a strategic position in the central autonomie network running from the limbics cortical regions to the lower brain stem which regulates the body's homeostasis in an integrated fashion.
Abstract: The key clinical aspects of FFI, i.e. hypovigilance and attention deficit, inability to generate EEG sleep patterns, sympathetic hyperactivity and attenuation of vegetative and hormonal circadian oscillations, are related to selective atrophy of the anteroventral and mediodorsal thalamic nuclei. These nuclei constitute the limbic part of the thalamus interconnecting limbic and paralimbic regions of the cortex and other subcortical structures in the limbic system including the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus released from cortico-limbic control is shifted to a prevalence of activating, as opposed to deactivating, functions including loss of sleep, sympathetic hyperactivity and the attendant attenuation of autonomic circadian and endocrine oscillations. These findings document that the limbic thalamus has a strategic position in the central autonomic network running from the limbic cortical regions to the lower brain stem which regulates the body's homeostasis in an integrated fashion.

TL;DR: In this article, β-glucosidase was crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and exhibited a considerable affinity to chitosan, giving good immobilization yields (55-85%) while maintaining an optimum level of activity (550-850 U/g).

TL;DR: Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations based on ab initio multiconfigurational second order perturbation theory are employed to construct a computer model of Bacteriorhodopsin that reproduces the observed static and transient electronic spectra, the dipole moment changes, and the energy stored in the photocycle intermediate K.
Abstract: Quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics calculations based on ab initio multiconfigurational second order perturbation theory are employed to construct a computer model of Bacteriorhodopsin that reproduces the observed static and transient electronic spectra, the dipole moment changes, and the energy stored in the photocycle intermediate K. The computed reaction coordinate indicates that the isomerization of the retinal chromophore occurs via a complex motion accounting for three distinct regimes: (i) production of the excited state intermediate I, (ii) evolution of I toward a conical intersection between the excited state and the ground state, and (iii) formation of K. We show that, during stage ii, a space-saving mechanism dominated by an asynchronous double bicycle-pedal deformation of the C10═C11─C12═C13─C14═N moiety of the chromophore dominates the isomerization. On this same stage a N─H/water hydrogen bond is weakened and initiates a breaking process that is completed during stage iii.
