Abstract: A key parameter to the description of all star formation processes is the density structure of the gas. In this letter, we make use of probability distribution functions (PDFs) of Herschel column density maps of Orion B, Aquila, and Polaris, obtained with the Herschel Gould Belt survey (HGBS). We aim to understand which physical processes influence the PDF shape, and with which signatures. The PDFs of Orion B (Aquila) show a lognormal distribution for low column densities until Av 3 (6), and a power-law tail for high column densities, consistent with a rho r^-2 profile for the equivalent spherical density distribution. The PDF of Orion B is broadened by external compression due to the nearby OB stellar aggregates. The PDF of a quiescent subregion of the non-star-forming Polaris cloud is nearly lognormal, indicating that supersonic turbulence governs the density distribution. But we also observe a deviation from the lognormal shape at Av>1 for a subregion in Polaris that includes a prominent filament. We conclude that (i) the point where the PDF deviates from the lognormal form does not trace a universal Av-threshold for star formation, (ii) statistical density fluctuations, intermittency and magnetic fields can cause excess from the lognormal PDF at an early cloud formation stage, (iii) core formation and/or global collapse of filaments and a non-isothermal gas distribution lead to a power-law tail, and (iv) external compression broadens the column density PDF, consistent with numerical simulations.

Abstract: Interleukin-1 (IL-1) mediates symptoms of sickness during the host response to infection. IL-1 exerts its effects via several subtypes of receptors. To assess the role of IL-1 receptor type I (IL-1RI) in the sickness-inducing effects of IL-1, IL-1beta and the cytokine inducer lipopolysaccharide were administered to IL-1RI-deficient mice (IL-1RI-/-). Sickness was assessed by depression of social exploration, anorexia, immobility and body weight loss. IL-1RI-/- mice were resistant to the sickness-inducing effects of IL-1beta administered intraperitoneally (2 microg/mouse) and intracerebroventricularly (2 ng/mouse), but still fully responsive to lipopolysaccharide administered intraperitoneally (2.5 microg/mouse) and intracerebroventricularly (3 ng/mouse). The sensitivity of IL-1RI-/- mice to lipopolysaccharide was not due to a higher brain expression of proinflammatory cytokines other than IL-1, since lipopolysaccharide-induced expression of brain IL-1 beta, tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and IL-6 transcripts were identical in IL-1RI-/- and control mice when measured by semiquantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction 1 h after treatment. Blockade of TNF-alpha action in the brain by intracerebroventricular administration of a fragment of the soluble TNF receptor, TNF binding protein (3.6 microg/mouse), attenuated the depressive effects of intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (1 microg/mouse) on behaviour in IL-1RI-/- but not in control mice. Since IL-1RI-/- mice were not more sensitive to intracerebroventricularly TNF-alpha (50 ng) than control mice, these results indicate that IL-1RI mediates the sickness effect of IL-1 and that TNF-alpha simply replaces IL-1 when this last cytokine is deficient.

Abstract: Aims. The PASTEL catalogue is an update of the [Fe/H] catalogue, published in 1997 and 2001. It is a bibliographical compilation of stellar atmospheric parameters providing (Teff ,l ogg ,[ Fe/H]) determinations obtained from the analysis of high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra, carried out with model atmospheres. PASTEL also provides determinations of the one parameter Teff based on various methods. It is aimed in the future to provide also homogenized atmospheric parameters and elemental abundances, radial and rotational velocities. A web interface has been created to query the catalogue on elaborated criteria. PASTEL is also distributed through the CDS database and VizieR. Methods. To make it as complete as possible, the main journals have been surveyed, as well as the CDS database, to find relevant publications. The catalogue is regularly updated with new determinations found in the literature. Results. As of Febuary 2010, PASTEL includes 30151 determinations of either Teff or (Teff ,l ogg ,[ Fe/H]) for 16 649 different stars corresponding to 865 bibliographical references. Nearly 6000 stars have a determination of the three parameters (Teff ,l ogg ,[ Fe/H]) with a high quality spectroscopic metallicity.

Abstract: Objective: To examine the distribution and relative levels of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the nondiabetic and preproliferative diabetic human retina and choroid. Methods: Immunohistochemical localization was performed on frozen sections from cryopreserved postmortem human tissue using a polyclonal antibody against VEGF and a streptavidin peroxidase system. Eyes from 5 subjects without diabetes and 8 subjects with diabetes were examined and analyzed using a 7-point immunohistochemical grading system. Results: In subjects without diabetes, weak or no VEGF immunoreactivity was associated with retinal blood vessels. In subjects with diabetes, we found significantly increased immunoreactivity in the retinal vascular endothelium and blood vessel walls. Vascular endothelial growth factor immunoreactivity was also associated with intravascular leukocytes in subjects with and without diabetes. In the choroid of subjects without diabetes, immunoreactivity was almost exclusively associated with intravascular leukocytes, whereas in diabetic subjects, immunoreactivity was localized within choriocapillaris endothelium, choroidal neovascular endothelium, and migrating retinal pigment epithelium cells. Conclusions: The observed increase in VEGF immunoreactivity in the diabetic retina and choroid suggests that VEGF may contribute to 2 well-documented events during retinopathy: increased vascular permeability and angiogenesis.
