Abstract: Context. The physical structure of proto-planetary disks is not yet well constrained by current observations. Millimeter interferometry is an essential tool to investigate young disks. Aims. We study the vertical and radial temperature distribution in a few well-known disks from an observational perspective. The surface density distribution of CO and HCO + and the scale-height are also investigated. Methods. We report CO observations at sub-arcsecond resolution with the IRAM array of the disks surrounding MWC 480, LkCa 15, and DM Tau, and simultaneous measurements of HCO + J = 1 → 0. To derive the disk properties, we fit a standard disk model in which all parameters are power laws of the distance to the star to the data. Possible biases associated with the method are detailed and explained. We compare the properties of the observed disks with similar objects. Results. We find evidence for a vertical temperature gradient in the disks of MWC 480 and DM Tau, as in AB Aur, but not in LkCa 15. The disk temperatures increase with stellar effective temperature. Except for AB Aur, the bulk of the CO gas is at temperatures smaller than 17 K, below the condensation temperature on grains. We find the scale height of the CO distribution to be larger (by 50%) than the expected hydrostatic scale height. The total amount of CO and the isotopologue ratio depends globally on the star. The more UV luminous objects appear to have more CO, but there is no simple dependency. The [ 13 CO]/[HCO + ] ratio is ∼600, with substantial variations between sources, and with radius. The temperature behavior is consistent with expectations, but published chemical models have difficulty reproducing the observed CO quantities. Changes in the slope of the surface density distribution of CO, compared to the continuum emission, suggest a more complex surface density distribution than is usually assumed in models. Vertical mixing seems an important chemical agent, as does photo-dissociation by the ambient UV radiation at the disk’s outer edge.

Abstract: The Photothermal Heterodyne Imaging method is used to study for the first time the absorption spectra of individual gold nanoparticles with diameters down to 5 nm. Intrinsic size effects wich result in a broadening of the Surface Plasmon resonance are unambiguously observed. Dispersions in the peak energies and homogeneous widths of the single particle resonances are revealed. The experimental results are analysed within the frame of Mie theory.

Abstract: The family of gradient boosting algorithms has been recently extended with several interesting proposals (i.e. XGBoost, LightGBM and CatBoost) that focus on both speed and accuracy. XGBoost is a scalable ensemble technique that has demonstrated to be a reliable and efficient machine learning challenge solver. LightGBM is an accurate model focused on providing extremely fast training performance using selective sampling of high gradient instances. CatBoost modifies the computation of gradients to avoid the prediction shift in order to improve the accuracy of the model. This work proposes a practical analysis of how these novel variants of gradient boosting work in terms of training speed, generalization performance and hyper-parameter setup. In addition, a comprehensive comparison between XGBoost, LightGBM, CatBoost, random forests and gradient boosting has been performed using carefully tuned models as well as using their default settings. The results of this comparison indicate that CatBoost obtains the best results in generalization accuracy and AUC in the studied datasets although the differences are small. LightGBM is the fastest of all methods but not the most accurate. Finally, XGBoost places second both in accuracy and in training speed. Finally an extensive analysis of the effect of hyper-parameter tuning in XGBoost, LightGBM and CatBoost is carried out using two novel proposed tools.

Abstract: Following the identification of a set of hypoxia-regulated microRNAs (miRNAs), recent studies have highlighted the importance of miR-210 and of its transcriptional regulation by the transcription factor hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1). We report here that miR-210 is overexpressed at late stages of non-small cell lung cancer. Expression of miR-210 in lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells caused an alteration of cell viability associated with induction of caspase-3/7 activity. miR-210 induced a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and the apparition of an aberrant mitochondrial phenotype. The expression profiling of cells overexpressing miR-210 revealed a specific signature characterized by enrichment for transcripts related to ‘cell death' and ‘mitochondrial dysfunction', including several subunits of the electron transport chain (ETC) complexes I and II. The transcript coding for one of these ETC components, SDHD, subunit D of succinate dehydrogenase complex (SDH), was validated as a bona fide miR-210 target. Moreover, SDHD knockdown mimicked miR-210-mediated mitochondrial alterations. Finally, miR-210-dependent targeting of SDHD was able to activate HIF-1, in line with previous studies linking loss-of-function SDH mutations to HIF-1 activation. miR-210 can thus regulate mitochondrial function by targeting key ETC component genes with important consequences on cell metabolism, survival and modulation of HIF-1 activity. These observations help explain contradictory data regarding miR-210 expression and its putative function in solid tumors.

Abstract: Polypeptide secondary structure controls the dimensions of aggregates formed from a polybutadieneb-poly(L-glutamic acid) diblock copolymer after direct dissolution into water. The hydrodynamic radius (RH) of these aggregates (even at high NaCl concentrations) were found to correlate (see picture) with a transition from a compactly folded α-helical poly(L-glutamic acid) block at low pH to an extended random coil conformation at basic pH.
