Abstract: Large gaps of knowledge exist regarding postembryonic brain morphogenesis of the zebrafish Danio rerio (Cyprinidae, Teleostei). The zebrafish represents – together with the frog (Xenopus), chick and mouse – one of four major models for the genetic study of early brain development. Here, we used normal silver-stained Bodian material and immunohistochemical material stained with a monoclonal antibody against the proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA, cyclin) to study the morphogenetic appearance and location of proliferation zones of the zebrafish brain between day 1 and day 10, focussing on the forebrain at day 5 postfertilization. Our results directly demonstrate that the dorsal telencephalic proliferation zone (i.e. the pallium) extends – consistent with the process of eversion – some distance laterally on top of the telencephalon. The subpallial telencephalic proliferation consists of dorsal and ventral zones. The preoptic region also includes dorsal and ventral proliferation zones. In the diencephalon proper, separate proliferation zones are present in the habenula, and in the periventricular cell masses of the dorsal thalamus, the ventral thalamus, and the pretectum. More ventrocaudally, the latter three massive proliferation zones appear to be replaced each by thinner, but distinct proliferation zones. Two of them represent ventrocaudal continuations of the dorsal and ventral thalamus and lie in the region referred to as the posterior tubercular area in adult teleostean neuroanatomy. The third lies in the region of the nucleus of the medial longitudinal fascicle. In addition, several hypothalamic proliferation zones are present. The data for the diencephalon are largely in agreement with the neuromeric model of brain organization of Puelles and Rubenstein (1993), which is mostly based on amniote data. Generally, the understanding of the prosomeric origin of teleostean prosencephalic cell masses may be regarded as pivotal for their comparative interpretation.

Abstract: In most practical situations, the compression or transmission of images and videos creates distortions that will eventually be perceived by a human observer. Vice versa, image and video restoration techniques, such as inpainting or denoising, aim to enhance the quality of experience of human viewers. Correctly assessing the similarity between an image and an undistorted reference image as subjectively experienced by a human viewer can thus lead to significant improvements in any transmission, compression, or restoration system. This paper introduces the Haar wavelet-based perceptual similarity index (HaarPSI), a novel and computationally inexpensive similarity measure for full reference image quality assessment. The HaarPSI utilizes the coefficients obtained from a Haar wavelet decomposition to assess local similarities between two images, as well as the relative importance of image areas. The consistency of the HaarPSI with the human quality of experience was validated on four large benchmark databases containing thousands of differently distorted images. On these databases, the HaarPSI achieves higher correlations with human opinion scores than state-of-the-art full reference similarity measures like the structural similarity index (SSIM), the feature similarity index (FSIM), and the visual saliency-based index (VSI). Along with the simple computational structure and the short execution time, these experimental results suggest a high applicability of the HaarPSI in real world tasks.

Abstract: The δ 18 O difference between shallow- and deep-living planktonic foraminifera is a proxy for the stratification of surface waters. In Holocene sediments from the Atlantic this difference increases from about 0‰ in subpolar regions to ∼3‰ in the tropics. The δ 18 O values of the shallow dwellers Globigerinoides sacculifer and Neogloboquadrina pachyderma mainly reflect surface-water conditions. The calcification depth of the deep-living species Globorotalia truncatulinoides (right-coiling) is affected by the stratification of the water column. In the subtropics, shell formation of G. truncatulinoides (right-coiling) begins in weakly stratified surface waters. In the tropics, the initial shell is secreted below the mixed layer. This hydrographically induced difference in calcification depth allows the use of the isotopic difference between G. truncatulinoides and the shallow species as a proxy for the stratification of surface waters. The Δδ 18 O between G. truncatulinoides and G. sacculifer from tropical gravity Core GeoB 1523-1 was significantly lower during isotope stage 2. This suggests that the glacial temperature stratification of western equatorial Atlantic surface waters was significantly reduced relative to the Holocene.
