Abstract: The UV absorption cross-section spectra of the atmospherically important radical BrO have been determined using the recently developed technique of time-windowing Fourier transform spectroscopy (TW-FTS). The absorption spectra of the A 2 Π 3/2 – X 2 Π 3/2 band system were recorded in the flash photolysis of a gaseous mixture of Br2 and O3. The bromine-photosensitized decomposition of O3 was observed at five different temperatures between 203 and 298 K. The absolute UV absorption cross-section was determined from the time-dependent observation of reactant and product absorptions and by a kinetic analysis of the BrO behavior. The integrated UV absorption cross-section of BrO was, within the accuracy of the measurements, constant over the temperature range studied, as expected from spectroscopic considerations. For the (7, 0) vibrational band at 29 540 cm−1 (338.5 nm), the peak absorption cross-sections were determined to be 2.19±0.23 at 298 K, 2.23±0.23 at 273 K, 2.52±0.26 at 243 K, 2.75±0.29 at 223 K, and 3.03±0.31 at 203 K (all in units ×10−17 cm2 per molecule, at a spectral resolution of 3.8 cm−1, with error intervals of 2σ). Further, vibrational constants and the dissociation limit for the electronic state A 2 Π 3/2 were derived. The A←X dissociation energy was determined to be D 0 =35 240±160 cm−1 or 421.6±1.9 kJ/mol.

Abstract: Summary Investigations of the biogeochemical roles of benthic Archaea in marine sediments are hampered by the scarcity of cultured representatives. In order to determine their metabolic capacity, we reconstructed the genomic content of four widespread uncultured benthic Archaea recovered from estuary sediments at 48% to 95% completeness. Four genomic bins were found to belong to different subgroups of the former Miscellaneous Crenarcheota Group (MCG) now called Bathyarchaeota: MCG-6, MCG-1, MCG-7/17 and MCG-15. Metabolic predictions based on gene content of the different genome bins indicate that subgroup 6 has the ability to hydrolyse extracellular plant-derived carbohydrates, and that all four subgroups can degrade detrital proteins. Genes encoding enzymes involved in acetate production as well as in the reductive acetyl–CoA pathway were detected in all four genomes inferring that these Archaea are organo-heterotrophic and autotrophic acetogens. Genes involved in nitrite reduction were detected in all Bathyarchaeota subgroups and indicate a potential for dissimilatory nitrite reduction to ammonium. Comparing the genome content of the different Bathyarchaeota subgroups indicated preferences for distinct types of carbohydrate substrates and implicitly, for different niches within the sedimentary environment.

Abstract: Subduction zones are often characterized by wedge-shaped sedimentary complexes—called accretionary prisms—that form when sediments are scraped off the subducting plate and added to the overriding plate. Large, landward-dipping thrust faults can cut through such a prism: these faults, known as 'megasplay faults'1, 2, originate near the top of the subducting plate and terminate at the shallow, landward edge of the prism1, 3, 4, 5, 6. Megasplay faults have been the subject of numerous geological and geophysical studies4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, but their initiation and evolution through time remains poorly constrained. Here we combine seismic reflection data from the Nankai accretionary wedge with geological data collected by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and find that the splay fault cutting this wedge initiated approx1.95 Million years (Myr) ago in the lower part of the prism as an out-of-sequence thrust (OOST). After an initial phase of high activity, the movement along the fault slowed down, but uplift and reactivation of the fault resumed about 1.55 Myr ago. The alternating periods of high and low activity along the splay fault that we document hint at episodic changes in the mechanical stability of accretionary prisms.

Abstract: We describe a patient who presented shortly after birth with hyperkinetic behaviour, myoclonia, respiratory insufficiency and hepatosplenomegaly. Gaucher-like storage cells were found in bone marrow. A liver biopsy showed massive lysosomal storage morphologically different to that in known lipid storage disorders. Biochemically, the patient had partial deficiencies of beta-galactocerebrosidase, beta-glucocerebrosidase and ceramidase in skin fibroblast extracts, but the sphingomyelinase activity was normal. Glucosyl ceramide and ceramide were elevated in liver tissue. Loading of cultured fibroblasts with radioactive sphingolipid precursors indicated a profound defect in ceramide catabolism. Immunological studies in fibroblasts showed a total absence of cross-reacting material to sphingolipid activator protein 2 (SAP-2). The patient died at 16 weeks of age. The fetus from his mother's next pregnancy was similarly affected. The possibility that the disorder results from a primary defect at the level of SAP-2 is discussed. We have named this unique disorder SAP deficiency.
