At London: Printed for Henrie Tomes [...] 1605" Text based on G.W. Kitchin's 1861 edition. Paragraph sections according to J. Spedding's 1854 edition. Page numbering of J. Spedding's 1854 edition has been added in square brackets [ ] in the following manner: to avoid word separation, page numbers precede words that were separated in the original edition. Chapter and section numerals of W.A. Wright's 1869 edition have been included. Paragraph sections in Spedding's 1854 edition that were apparently omitted in Kitchin's 1861 edition and disregarded in Wright's 1869 textual analysis are marked as omissions [--]. Greek words and sentences have been enclosed within pointed brackets and will be rendered as Greek characters with appropriate True Type Fonts like Scholars Press' Ionic (SPIONIC). All quotations have been capitalized. Spedding's marginal titles and italics within the text had to be omitted as well as his tables. Please consult recent editions for translations and references for Bacon's quotations.

Abstract: Using axonal tracers, we characterized the neurons projecting from the brain to the spinal cord as well as the terminal fields of ascending spinal projections in the brain of adult zebrafish with unlesioned or transected spinal cords. Twenty distinct brain nuclei were found to project to the spinal cord. These nuclei were similar to those found in the closely related goldfish, except that additionally the parvocellular preoptic nucleus, the medial octavolateralis nucleus, and the nucleus tangentialis, but not the facial lobe, projected to the spinal cord in zebrafish. Terminal fields of axons, visualized by anterograde tracing, were seen in the telencephalon, the diencephalon, the torus semicircularis, the optic tectum, the eminentia granularis, and throughout the ventral brainstem in unlesioned animals. Following spinal cord transection at a level approximately 3.5 mm caudal to the brainstem/spinal cord transition zone, neurons in most brain nuclei grew axons beyond the transection site into the distal spinal cord to the level of retrograde tracer application within 6 weeks. However, the individually identifiable Mauthner cells were never seen to do so up to 15 weeks after spinal cord transection. Nearly all neurons survived axotomy, and the vast majority of axons that had grown beyond the transection site belonged to previously axotomized neurons as shown by double tracing. Terminal fields were not re-established in the torus semicircularis and the eminentia granularis following spinal cord transection.

Abstract: In each graph-grammar approach it is defined how and under which conditions graph productions can be applied to a given graph in order to obtain a derived graph. The conditions under which productions can be applied are called application conditions. Although the generative power of most of the known general graph-grammar approaches is sufficient to generate any recursively enumerable set of graphs, it is often convenient to have specific application conditions for each production. Such application conditions, on the one hand, include context conditions like the existence or non-existence of nodes, edges, or certain subgraphs in the given graph as well as embedding restrictions concerning the morphisms from the left-hand side of the production to the given graph. In this paper, the concept of application conditions introduced by Ehrig and Habel is restricted to contextual conditions, especially negative ones. In addition to the general concept, we state local confluence and the Parallelism Theorem for derivations with application conditions. Finally we study context-free graph grammars with application conditions with respect to their generative power.

Abstract: The X-ray fluorescence (XRF) core scanner provides bulk-sediment chemistry data measured nondestructively at the split core sediment surface. Although this method is widely accepted, there is little known about the effects of physical properties such as density and water content on XRF core scanner data. Comparison of XRF scanner measurements from the sediment surface and dry powder samples of sediment core GeoB7920 indicates strongly reduced element intensities for the lighter elements Al and Si. We relate the lower element intensities of the measurements taken at the sediment surface to the amount of water in the sample volume analyzed by the XRF core scanner. The heavier elements K, Ca, Ti, and Fe remain relatively unaffected by the variation of any physical property within sediment core GeoB7920. Additionally, we successfully use the elemental intensity of Cl as a proxy for the seawater content in the sample volume analyzed by the XRF core scanner. This enables the establishment of a correction function for the elements Al and Si that corrects for the radiation absorption of the water content in sediment core GeoB7920 off Cape Blanc, NW Africa.
