Abstract: Anemia in oncology patients is often considered a side effect of cancer therapy; however, it may occur before any antineoplastic treatment (cancer-related anemia). This study was aimed to evaluate the prevalence of cancer-related anemia in a large cohort of oncology patients and whether inflammation and malnutrition were predictive of its development and severity. The present study included 888 patients with cancer at different sites between May 2011 and January 2014. Patients were assessed at diagnosis before any cancer treatment. The prevalence of anemia according to the main clinical factors (tumor site, stage and performance status) was analyzed. In each patient markers of inflammation, iron metabolism, malnutrition and oxidative stress as well as the modified Glasgow prognostic score, a combined index of malnutrition and inflammation, were assessed and their role in predicting hemoglobin level was evaluated. The percentage of anemic patients was 63% with the lowest hemoglobin levels being found in the patients with most advanced cancer and compromised performance status. Hemoglobin concentration differed by tumor site and was lowest in patients with ovarian cancer. Hemoglobin concentration was inversely correlated with inflammatory markers, hepcidin, ferritin, erythropoietin and reactive oxygen species, and positively correlated with leptin, albumin, cholesterol and antioxidant enzymes. In multivariate analysis, stage, interleukin-6 and leptin were independent predictors of hemoglobin concentration. Furthermore, hemoglobin was inversely dependent on modified Glasgow Prognostic Score. In conclusion, cancer-related anemia is a multifactorial problem with immune, nutritional and metabolic components that affect its severity. Only a detailed assessment of the pathogenesis of cancer-related anemia may enable clinicians to provide safe and effective individualized treatment.

Abstract: Hysteria is undoubtedly the first mental disorder attributable to women, accurately described in the second millennium BC, and until Freud considered an exclusively female disease. Over 4000 years of history, this disease was considered from two perspectives: scientific and demonological. It was cured with herbs, sex or sexual abstinence, punished and purified with fire for its association with sorcery and finally, clinically studied as a disease and treated with innovative therapies. However, even at the end of 19th century, scientific innovation had still not reached some places, where the only known therapies were those proposed by Galen. During the 20th century several studies postulated the decline of hysteria amongst occidental patients (both women and men) and the escalating of this disorder in non-Western countries. The concept of hysterical neurosis is deleted with the 1980 DSM-III. The evolution of these diseases seems to be a factor linked with social “westernization”, and examining under what conditions the symptoms first became common in different societies became a priority for recent studies over risk factor.

Abstract: Short-term accelerated life test activity on high brightness light emitting diodes is reported. Two families of 1-W light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from different manufacturers were submitted to distinct stress conditions: high temperature storage without bias and high dc current test. During aging, degradation mechanisms like light output decay and electrical property worsening were detected. In particular, the degradation in light efficiency induced by thermal storage was found to follow an exponential law, and the activation energy of the process was extrapolated. Aged devices exhibited a modification of the package epoxy color from white to brown. The instability of the package contributes to the overall degradation in terms of optical and spectral properties. In addition, an increase in thermal resistance was detected on one family of LEDs. This increase induces higher junction temperature levels during operative conditions. In order to correlate the degradation mechanisms and kinetics found during thermal stress, a high dc current stress was performed. Results from this comparative analysis showed similar behavior, implying that the degradation process of dc current aged devices is thermal activated due to high temperatures reached by the junction during stress. Finally, the different effects of the stress on two families of LEDs were taken into account in order to identify the impact of aging on device structure.
