Abstract: I. Introduction THE number and proportion of elderly people are steadily growing in western societies as a consequence of increased life expectancy and reduced birth rate. This phenomenon has important social, economical, and public health implications and has generated a number of studies aimed at clarifying the basis of the physiological and pathological aspects of aging. In this context, endocrine function in the elderly has been the object of particular attention (1–9). An important concept derived from these studies is that while the equilibrium concentrations of the principal hormones are substantially normal in most healthy elderly, with advancing age there are significant alterations in hormone production, metabolism, and action, with consequent achievement of new equilibria. Abstract: We present the results of a search for dark matter weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) in the mass range below 20 GeV/c2 using a target of low-radioactivity argon with a 6786.0 kg d exposure. The data were obtained using the DarkSide-50 apparatus at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The analysis is based on the ionization signal, for which the DarkSide-50 time projection chamber is fully efficient at 0.1 keVee. The observed rate in the detector at 0.5 keVee is about 1.5 event/keVee/kg/d and is almost entirely accounted for by known background sources. We obtain a 90% C.L. exclusion limit above 1.8 GeV/c2 for the spin-independent cross section of dark matter WIMPs on nucleons, extending the exclusion region for dark matter below previous limits in the range 1.8–6 GeV/c2.

Abstract: A number of diverse bulk properties of the zinc-blende and wurtzite III-V nitrides AlN, GaN, and InN, are predicted from first principles within density-functional theory using the plane-wave ultrasoft pseudopotential method, within both the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) to the exchange-correlation functional. Besides structure and cohesion, we study formation enthalpies (a key ingredient in predicting defect solubilities and surface stability), spontaneous polarizations and piezoelectric constants (central parameters for nanostructure modeling), and elastic constants. Our study bears out the relative merits of the two density-functional approaches in describing diverse properties of the III-V nitrides (and of the parent species ${\mathrm{N}}_{2},$ Al, Ga, and In). None of the two schemes gives entirely successful results. However, the GGA associated with the multiprojector ultrasoft pseudopotential method slightly outperforms the LDA overall as to lattice parameters, cohesive energies, and formation enthalpies of wurtzite nitrides. This is relevant to the study of properties such as polarization, vibrational frequencies, elastic constants, nonstochiometric substitution, and absorption. A major exception is the formation enthalpy of InN, which is underestimated by the GGA (\ensuremath{\sim}0 vs -0.2 eV).
