TL;DR: Fifty-seven attacks in which 61 persons were injured took place in three national parks in the United States and accounted for 79 percent of the known injuries and gives an injury rate of 1 person per 2 million visitors.
Abstract: Grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) attacks resulting in human injury and known to have occurred in the national parks of North America were examined. Fifty-seven attacks in which 61 persons were injured took place in three national parks in the United States and accounted for 79 percent of the known injuries. The remaining 16 injuries occurred in four Canadian national parks. The 77 injured persons gives an injury rate of 1 person per 2 million visitors.

TL;DR: The sequence of the markers on the chromosome of S. typhimurium LT2 is probably pro heme purE, analogous to the sequence found in E. coli K-12, which also possesses two hem regions.
Abstract: Nine hemin-deficient mutants of Salmonella typhimurium LT2 were isolated as neomycin-resistant colonies. Five of these mutants could be stimulated by Δ-aminolevulinic acid (Δ-ALA), thus representing hemA mutants. Since S. typhimurium LT2 is not able to incorporate hemin, the identification of the mutants not stimulated by Δ-ALA was made on the basis of the simultaneous loss of catalase activity and cytochromes. The hemA gene was mapped by conjugation in the trp region, probably in the order purB-pyrD-hemA-trp; the episome FT71trp does not carry the hemA gene. Transductional intercrosses by phage P22 indicate that hemA 11, 12, 13, and 37 are at very closely linked sites, whereas hemA14 is at a more distant site in the same or an adjacent gene. No joint transduction was detected between hemA and trp or pyrF. The loci affected in the other hemin-deficient mutants were linked in conjugation to the pro+ marker (frequency of linkage, 88 to 97%), but cotransduction of the two markers could not be obtained. The episome F lac hem purE, which originates from Escherichia coli K-12, could complement these hemin-deficient mutants of S. typhimurium LT2. As a result, the sequence of the markers on the chromosome of S. typhimurium LT2 is probably pro heme purE, analogous to the sequence found in E. coli K-12. Thus, the chromosome of S. typhimurium also possesses two hem regions, with a location similar to that described in E. coli K-12.

TL;DR: In this article, a solution of the axisymmetric Boussinesq problem is obtained, for an elastic layer lying over an elastic foundation, from which simple formulae for the depth of penetration of the tip of a punch of arbitrary profile and the total load which must be applied to the punch to achieve this penetration are derived.

TL;DR: The lack of correlation between endogenous GA levels and stem height suggests that in peas the predominant factor in CCC-induced inhibition of stem growth is not related to an effect of CCC on GA biosynthesis.
Abstract: Pea seedlings (cv. Alaska), were treated with two concentrations of (2-chloroethyl)trimethylammonium chloride (CCC) and choline chloride. Treatment with 1 mg/l CCC resulted in as much as a 150fold increase in endogenous gibberellin (GA) levels without there being any parallel stimulation of growth. Plants grown in 1,000 mg/l CCC were severely dwarfed but contained GA levels not significantly different from control plants grown in distilled water. CCC also retarded GA3-induced growth of pea seedlings. These effects appear to be CCC specific as the CCC analogue choline chloride affected neither the GA content of pea seedlings nor their response to GA3. The lack of correlation between endogenous GA levels and stem height suggests that in peas the predominant factor in CCC-induced inhibition of stem growth is not related to an effect of CCC on GA biosynthesis.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a treatment for the effect of the internet on the difficulty of finding the shape of a CANTILEVERED BOX GIRDER in wide-flange scenarios.
Abstract: METHODS FOR THE ANALYSIS OF SHEAR LAG IN WIDE FLANGES ARE REVIEWED AND A TREATMENT IS PRESENTED WHICH INCORPORATES THE EFFECT OF THE WEB UPON THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN THE STIFFENED FLANGE OF A BOX GIRDER BY REPLACING THE WEB WITH AN EDGE STIFFENER ON THE FLANGE. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE EFFECT OF SEVERE SHEAR LAG IN THE CURVATURE AND DISPLACED SHAPE OF A CANTILEVERED BOX GIRDER. A SERIES OF TESTS ON MODEL GIRDERS IS DESCRIBED AND THE RESULTS ARE COMPARED WITH AN APPROXIMATE "STIFFENER-SHEET" ANALYSIS, A MORE RIGOROUS ORTHOTROPIC PLATE ANALYSIS, AND A PLANE STRESS FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS; THE LATTER IS USED TO ANALYSE FLANGES UNDER MORE COMPLEX CONDITIONS. A THREE-DIMENSIONAL FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS CONFIRMED THE OBSERVED CURVATURES AT THE SECTION OF HIGH SHEAR LAG. /ASCE/

TL;DR: A sample of lunar dust was examined for organic compounds and traces of porphyrins were found, perhaps arising from rocket exhaust materials.
Abstract: A sample of lunar dust was examined for organic compounds. Carbon detected in concentrations of 157 micrograms per gram had a δ13C per mil (PDB) value of + 20. Treatment with hydrochloric acid yielded hydrocarbons of low molecular weight, suggesting the presence of carbides. The gas chromatogram of the acylated and esterified derivatives of the hydrolyzate was similar to that obtained for the Pueblito de Allende meteorite. There were no detectable amounts of extractable high-molecular-weight alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, isoprenoid hydrocarbons, normal alkanes, fatty acids, amino acids, sugars, or nucleic acid bases. Traces of porphyrins were found, perhaps arising from rocket exhaust materials.

TL;DR: Male sterility mutants have been induced in the Y chromosome by treatment with ethyl methanesulfonate and several of the mutant Y chromosomes were sensitive to the temperature at which males were reared, males being partially fertile when reared at 18° and sterile when rearing at 25°.
Abstract: Male sterility mutants have been induced in the Y chromosome by treatment with ethyl methanesulfonate. Complementation tests with deficient Y chromosome tester stocks revealed that many of the mutant Y chromosomes were deficient for more than one male fertility locus. Cytological analysis showed that in two cases of multiple deficiency the long arm of the Y chromosome was grossly reduced in size. Several of the mutant Y chromosomes were sensitive to the temperature at which males were reared, males being partially fertile when reared at 18° and sterile when reared at 25°.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the tolerance of radiant heat to the forearm under three forms of cognitive appraisal: (1) thinking of the pain as being pleasurable (denial), (2) thinking the pain was a protective reaction of sensory nerves (intellectualization), and (3) thinking a blank wall (neutral).
Abstract: Tolerance of radiant heat to the forearm was measured under three forms of cognitive appraisal: (1) thinking of the pain as being pleasurable (denial); (2) thinking of the pain as being a protective reaction of sensory nerves (intellectualization);(3) thinking of a blank wall (neutral). Ss were informed that each form of appraisal was endorsed by a different source: (1) an obstetrician, (2) a nurse’s aide, and (3) a grade-nine student. Results indicated denial was significantly superior in raising pain tolerance to both the neutral appraisal as well as intellectualization. Also, the effects of the different cognitive appraisals varied in relation to the sources of endorsement, denial being ineffective when endorsed by the nurse’s aide and intellectualization decreasing tolerance when endorsed by the grade-nine student. Discussion of results centered around the difference of the effects of cognitive appraisal on pain tolerance as compared to the effects on tolerance of experimental threat.

TL;DR: A Hardy-Wolff-Goodell heat test and a pressure algometer test of pain tolerance were given to 72 female Ss divided into two groups on the basis of their R-S scores.
Abstract: A Hardy-Wolff-Goodell heat test and a pressure algometer test of pain tolerance were given to 72 female Ss divided into two groups on the basis of their R-S scores. Half the Ss received the heat test first while half received the pressure test first. 5 min. elapsed between the two trials. Analysis of the data indicated that repressors had a higher tolerance for pain than sensitizers on the first trial. However, repressors showed a significant decrease in their tolerance scores from Trial 1 to 2, but not sensitizers. These results were opposite to those expected, indicating that personality factors may have a different effect on the way an individual copes with repeated exposures to psychological stresses and with repeated exposure to pain.
