Abstract: Homozygous loss of the warts (wts) gene of Drosophila, caused by mitotic recombination in somatic cells, leads to the formation of cell clones that are fragmented, rounded, and greatly overgrown compared with normal controls. Therefore, the gene is required for the control of the amount and direction of cell proliferation as well as for normal morphogenesis. The absence of wts function also results in apical hypertrophy of imaginal disc epithelial cells. Secretion of cuticle over and between the domed apical surfaces of these cells leads to a honeycomb-like structure and gives the superficial wart-like phenotype of mitotic clones on the adult. One wts allele allows survival of homozygotes to the late larval stage, and these larvae show extensive imaginal disc overgrowth. Because of the excess growth and abnormalities of differentiation that follow homozygous loss, we consider wts to be a tumor suppressor gene. The wts gene is defined by the breakpoints of overlapping deficiencies in the right telomeric region of chromosome 3, region 100A, and by lethal P-element insertions and excisions. It encodes a protein kinase that is most similar to human myotonic dystrophy kinase, the Neurospora cot-1 protein kinase, two cell-cycle regulated kinases of yeast, and several putative kinases from plants. These proteins define a new subfamily of protein kinases that are closely related to but distinct from the cyclic AMP-dependent kinases. Although myotonic dystrophy is defined by a neuromuscular disorder, it is sometimes associated with multiple pilomatrixomas, which are otherwise rare epithelial tumors, and with other tumors including neurofibromas and parathyroid adenomas. Our results raise the possibility that homozygous loss of the myotonic dystrophy kinase may contribute to the development of these tumors.

Abstract: Recent results establish the optimality of interference alignment to approach the Shannon capacity of interference networks at high SNR. However, the extent to which interference can be aligned over a finite number of signalling dimensions remains unknown. Another important concern for interference alignment schemes is the requirement of global channel knowledge. In this work we provide examples of iterative algorithms that utilize the reciprocity of wireless networks to achieve interference alignment with only local channel knowledge at each node. These algorithms also provide numerical insights into the feasibility of interference alignment that are not yet available in theory.

Abstract: Effects of early child care on children's functioning from 4½ years through the end of 6th grade (M age=12.0 years) were examined in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (n=1,364). The results indicated that although parenting was a stronger and more consistent predictor of children's development than early child-care experience, higher quality care predicted higher vocabulary scores and more exposure to center care predicted more teacher-reported externalizing problems. Discussion focuses on mechanisms responsible for these effects, the potential collective consequences of small child-care effects, and the importance of the ongoing follow-up at age 15.

Abstract: Motivation: Analogous to biological sequence comparison, comparing cellular networks is an important problem that could provide insight into biological understanding and therapeutics. For technical reasons, comparing large networks is computationally infeasible, and thus heuristics, such as the degree distribution, clustering coefficient, diameter, and relative graphlet frequency distribution have been sought. It is easy to demonstrate that two networks are different by simply showing a short list of properties in which they differ. It is much harder to show that two networks are similar, as it requires demonstrating their similarity in all of their exponentially many properties. Clearly, it is computationally prohibitive to analyze all network properties, but the larger the number of constraints we impose in determining network similarity, the more likely it is that the networks will truly be similar. Results: We introduce a new systematic measure of a network's local structure that imposes a large number of similarity constraints on networks being compared. In particular, we generalize the degree distribution, which measures the number of nodes 'touching' k edges, into distributions measuring the number of nodes 'touching' k graphlets, where graphlets are small connected non-isomorphic subgraphs of a large network. Our new measure of network local structure consists of 73 graphlet degree distributions of graphlets with 2--5 nodes, but it is easily extendible to a greater number of constraints (i.e. graphlets), if necessary, and the extensions are limited only by the available CPU. Furthermore, we show a way to combine the 73 graphlet degree distributions into a network 'agreement' measure which is a number between 0 and 1, where 1 means that networks have identical distributions and 0 means that they are far apart. Based on this new network agreement measure, we show that almost all of the 14 eukaryotic PPI networks, including human, resulting from various high-throughput experimental techniques, as well as from curated databases, are better modeled by geometric random graphs than by Erdos--Reny, random scale-free, or Barabasi--Albert scale-free networks. Abstract: We use the density matrix renormalization group to perform accurate calculations of the ground state of the nearest-neighbor quantum spin S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. We study this model on numerous long cylinders with circumferences up to 12 lattice spacings. Through a combination of very-low-energy and small finite-size effects, our results provide strong evidence that, for the infinite two-dimensional system, the ground state of this model is a fully gapped spin liquid.
