Abstract: We distinguish the activity of writing large programs from that of writing small ones. By large programs we mean systems consisting of many small programs (modules), possibly written by different people.We need languages for programming-in-the-small, i.e. languages not unlike the common programming languages of today, for writing modules. We also need a “module interconnection language” for knitting those modules together into an integrated whole and for providing an overview that formally records the intent of the programmer(s) and that can be checked for consistency by a compiler.We explore the software reliability aspects of such an interconnection language. Emphasis is placed on facilities for information hiding and for defining layers of virtual machines.

Abstract: Although sexual selection can provide benefits to both sexes, it also can be costly because of expanded opportunities for intersexual conflict We evaluated the role of sexual selection in a naturally promiscuous species, Drosophila melanogaster In two replicate populations, sexual selection was removed through enforced monogamous mating with random mate assignment or retained in promiscuous controls Monogamous mating constrains the reproductive success of mates to be identical, thereby converting prior conflicts between mates into opportunities for mutualism Random mate assignment removes the opportunity for females to choose beneficial qualities in their mate The mating treatments were maintained for 47 generations, and evolution was allowed to proceed naturally within the parameters of the design In the monogamous populations, males evolved to be less harmful to their mates, and females evolved to be less resistant to male-induced harm The monogamous populations also evolved a greater net reproductive rate than their promiscuous controls These results indicate a potentially widespread cost of sexual selection caused by conflicts inherent to promiscuity

Abstract: The aim of this study was twofold: (a)to measure the alternate form reliability of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, and (b)to determine its construct validity by correlating it with the four scales of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). The alternate form reliability was .72. The Extraversion and Psychoticism scales of the EPQ were positively and significantly correlated with the narcissism measure, and the Lie scale showed a significant negative correlation. The Neuroticism scale showed a nonsignificant relationship with narcissism. In addition, the combined Extraversion and Psychoticism scales produced[ a Multiple R with the narcissism measure that accounted for significantly more of the variance in narcissism than did either measure alone.

Abstract: Gas accretion onto some massive black holes (MBHs) at the centers of galaxies actively powers luminous emission, but most MBHs are considered dormant. Occasionally, a star passing too near an MBH is torn apart by gravitational forces, leading to a bright tidal disruption flare (TDF). Although the high-energy transient Sw 1644+57 initially displayed none of the theoretically anticipated (nor previously observed) TDF characteristics, we show that observations suggest a sudden accretion event onto a central MBH of mass about 106 to 107 solar masses. There is evidence for a mildly relativistic outflow, jet collimation, and a spectrum characterized by synchrotron and inverse Compton processes; this leads to a natural analogy of Sw 1644+57 to a temporary smaller-scale blazar.
