Abstract: The ultrafast dynamics of photoexcited electrons in the semiconductor iron oxides, γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3, have been measured using femtosecond laser spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy shows the γ-Fe2O3 particles are spherical, with 1−2 nm average diameter, and the α-Fe2O3 are spindle-shaped, with average dimensions of 1 × 5 nm. Static electronic absorption measurements of the colloids suggest that they may be in the quantum confined regime. Steady-state emission measurements show that the <400 nm direct transitions are moderately emissive, but the indirect transitions in the visible do not produce measurable emission. The ultrafast transient absorption decay profiles measured for the γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3 samples synthesized in our lab as well as a commercial sample of γ-Fe2O3 are the same and are fit best with three exponentials with 0.36, 4.2, and 67 ps time constants. Abstract: Bigger isn't better: Gold nanoclusters exhibit enhanced electrocatalytic activity in oxygen reduction when the core size decreased from Au(140) to Au(11), as reflected by the onset potential E(onset) and peak current density J(K) (see picture). The increasing fraction of surface atoms with low coordination numbers and the shift of the d-band center to the Fermi level facilitate oxygen adsorption.

Abstract: This chapter presents a general overview of the major controls of trace metals in seawater, developed from the extensive research on trace metals over the last few decades. The reader should be given a first-order understanding and insight into trace metal biogeochemistry in the oceans, rather than presented with a comprehensive review of the distribution of each trace metal. Each of the trace metals discussed will undoubtedly prove to have unique characteristics and subtle differences from this version, yet the comparison with these characteristics will serve as a good springboard to a more complete understanding.
