Abstract: This paper analyses the stability and fairness of two classes of rate control algorithm for communication networks. The algorithms provide natural generalisations to large-scale networks of simple additive increase/multiplicative decrease schemes, and are shown to be stable about a system optimum characterised by a proportional fairness criterion. Stability is established by showing that, with an appropriate formulation of the overall optimisation problem, the network's implicit objective function provides a Lyapunov function for the dynamical system defined by the rate control algorithm. The network's optimisation problem may be cast in primal or dual form: this leads naturally to two classes of algorithm, which may be interpreted in terms of either congestion indication feedback signals or explicit rates based on shadow prices. Both classes of algorithm may be generalised to include routing control, and provide natural implementations of proportionally fair pricing.

Abstract: Graphite oxide (GO) and its derivatives have been studied using 13C and 1H NMR. NMR spectra of GO derivatives confirm the assignment of the 70 ppm line to C−OH groups and allow us to propose a new structural model for GO. Thus we assign the 60 ppm line to epoxide groups (1,2-ethers) and not to 1,3-ethers, as suggested earlier, and the 130 ppm line to aromatic entities and conjugated double bonds. GO contains two kinds of regions: aromatic regions with unoxidized benzene rings and regions with aliphatic six-membered rings. The relative size of the two regions depends on the degree of oxidation. The carbon grid is nearly flat; only the carbons attached to OH groups have a slightly distorted tetrahedral configuration, resulting in some wrinkling of the layers. The formation of phenol (or aromatic diol) groups during deoxygenation indicates that the epoxide and the C−OH groups are very close to one another. Abstract: The contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to inherited breast cancer was assessed by linkage and mutation analysis in 237 families, each with at least four cases of breast cancer, collected by the Breast Cancer Linkage Consortium. Families were included without regard to the occurrence of ovarian or other cancers. Overall, disease was linked to BRCA1 in an estimated 52% of families, to BRCA2 in 32% of families, and to neither gene in 16% (95% confidence interval [CI] 6%-28%), suggesting other predisposition genes. The majority (81%) of the breast-ovarian cancer families were due to BRCA1, with most others (14%) due to BRCA2. Conversely, the majority of families with male and female breast cancer were due to BRCA2 (76%). The largest proportion (67%) of families due to other genes was found in families with four or five cases of female breast cancer only. These estimates were not substantially affected either by changing the assumed penetrance model for BRCA1 or by including or excluding BRCA1 mutation data. Among those families with disease due to BRCA1 that were tested by one of the standard screening methods, mutations were detected in the coding sequence or splice sites in an estimated 63% (95% CI 51%-77%). The estimated sensitivity was identical for direct sequencing and other techniques. The penetrance of BRCA2 was estimated by maximizing the LOD score in BRCA2-mutation families, over all possible penetrance functions. The estimated cumulative risk of breast cancer reached 28% (95% CI 9%-44%) by age 50 years and 84% (95% CI 43%-95%) by age 70 years. The corresponding ovarian cancer risks were 0.4% (95% CI 0%-1%) by age 50 years and 27% (95% CI 0%-47%) by age 70 years. The lifetime risk of breast cancer appears similar to the risk in BRCA1 carriers, but there was some suggestion of a lower risk in BRCA2 carriers <50 years of age.

Abstract: Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites are the defining neuropathological characteristics of Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. They are made of abnormal filamentous assemblies of unknown composition. We show here that Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites from Parkinson’s disease and dementia with Lewy bodies are stained strongly by antibodies directed against amino-terminal and carboxyl-terminal sequences of α-synuclein, showing the presence of full-length or close to full-length α-synuclein. The number of α-synuclein-stained structures exceeded that immunoreactive for ubiquitin, which is currently the most sensitive marker of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. Staining for α-synuclein thus will replace staining for ubiquitin as the preferred method for detecting Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites. We have isolated Lewy body filaments by a method used for the extraction of paired helical filaments from Alzheimer’s disease brain. By immunoelectron microscopy, extracted filaments were labeled strongly by anti-α-synuclein antibodies. The morphologies of the 5- to 10-nm filaments and their staining characteristics suggest that extended α-synuclein molecules run parallel to the filament axis and that the filaments are polar structures. These findings indicate that α-synuclein forms the major filamentous component of Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites.

Abstract: An all-polymer semiconductor integrated device is demonstrated with a high-mobility conjugated polymer field-effect transistor (FET) driving a polymer light-emitting diode (LED) of similar size. The FET uses regioregular poly(hexylthiophene). Its performance approaches that of inorganic amorphous silicon FETs, with field-effect mobilities of 0.05 to 0.1 square centimeters per volt second and ON-OFF current ratios of >10 6 . The high mobility is attributed to the formation of extended polaron states as a result of local self-organization, in contrast to the variable-range hopping of self-localized polarons found in more disordered polymers. The FET-LED device represents a step toward all-polymer optoelectronic integrated circuits such as active-matrix polymer LED displays.

Abstract: The gut is an obvious target for the development of functional foods, acting as it does as the interface between diet and the metabolic events which sustain life. The key processes in digestive physiology which can be regulated by modifying diet are satiety, the rate and extent of macronutrient breakdown and absorption from the small bowel, sterol metabolism, the colonic microflora, fermentation, mucosal function and bowel habit, and the gut immune system. The intestinal microflora is the main focus of many current functional foods. Probiotics are foods which contain live bacteria which are beneficial to health whilst prebiotics, such as certain non-digestible oligosaccharides which selectively stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria in the colon, are already on the market. Their claimed benefits are to alleviate lactose maldigestion, increase resistance to invasion by pathogenic species of bacteria in the gut, stimulate the immune system and possibly protect against cancer. There are very few reports of well-designed human intervention studies with prebiotics as yet. Certain probiotic species have been shown to shorten the duration of rotavirus diarrhoea in children but much more work is needed on the mechanism of immunomodulation and of competitive exclusion and microflora modification. The development of functional foods for the gut is in its infancy and will be successful only if more fundamental research is done on digestive physiology, the gut microflora, immune system and mucosal function.

Abstract: Familial multiple system tauopathy with presenile dementia (MSTD) is a neurodegenerative disease with an abundant filamentous tau protein pathology. It belongs to the group of familial frontotemporal dementias with Parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17 (FTDP-17), a major class of inherited dementing disorders whose genetic basis is unknown. We now report a G to A transition in the intron following exon 10 of the gene for microtubule-associated protein tau in familial MSTD. The mutation is located at the 3′ neighboring nucleotide of the GT splice-donor site and disrupts a predicted stem-loop structure. We also report an abnormal preponderance of soluble tau protein isoforms with four microtubule-binding repeats over isoforms with three repeats in familial MSTD. This most likely accounts for our previous finding that sarkosyl-insoluble tau protein extracted from the filamentous deposits in familial MSTD consists only of tau isoforms with four repeats. These findings reveal that a departure from the normal ratio of four-repeat to three-repeat tau isoforms leads to the formation of abnormal tau filaments. The results show that dysregulation of tau protein production can cause neurodegeneration and imply that the FTDP-17 gene is the tau gene. This work has major implications for Alzheimer’s disease and other tauopathies.

Abstract: Theory of mind, the ability to make inferences about others' mental states, seems to be a modular cognitive capacity that underlies humans' ability to engage in complex social interaction. It develops in several distinct stages, which can be measured with social reasoning tests of increasing difficulty. Individuals with Asperger's syndrome, a mild form of autism, perform well on simpler theory of mind tests but show deficits on more developmentally advanced theory of mind tests. We tested patients with bilateral damage to orbito-frontal cortex (n = 5) and unilateral damage in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (n = 5) on a series of theory of mind tasks varying in difficulty. Bilateral orbito-frontal lesion patients performed similarly to individuals with Asperger's syndrome, performing well on simpler tests and showing deficits on tasks requiring more subtle social reasoning, such as the ability to recognize a faux pas. In contrast, no specific theory of mind deficits were evident in the unilateral dorsolateral frontal lesion patients. The dorsolateral lesion patients had difficulty only on versions of the tasks that placed demands on working memory.

Abstract: In a conventional superconductor, the binding of electrons into the paired states that collectively carry the supercurrent is mediated by phonons — vibrations of the crystal lattice. Here we argue that, in the case of the heavy fermion superconductors CePd2Si2 and CeIn3, the charge carriers are bound together in pairs by magnetic spin–spin interactions. The existence of magnetically mediated superconductivity in these compounds could help shed light on the question of whether magnetic interactions are relevant for describing the superconducting and normal-state properties of other strongly correlated electron systems, perhaps including the high-temperature copper oxide superconductors.

Abstract: In the local Universe, most galaxies are dominated by stars, with less than ten per cent of their visible mass in the form of gas. Determining when most of these stars formed is one of the central issues of observational cosmology. Optical and ultraviolet observations of high-redshift galaxies (particularly those in the Hubble Deep Field) have been interpreted as indicating that the peak of star formation occurred between redshifts of 1 and 1.5. But it is known that star formation takes place in dense clouds, and is often hidden at optical wavelengths because of extinction by dust in the clouds. Here we report a deep submillimetre-wavelength survey of the Hubble Deep Field; these wavelengths trace directly the emission from dust that has been warmed by massive star-formation activity. The combined radiation of the five most significant detections accounts for 30–50 per cent of the previously unresolved background emission in this area. Four of these sources appear to be galaxies in the redshift range 2< z < 4, which, assuming these objects have properties comparable to local dust-enshrouded starburst galaxies, implies a star-formation rate during that period about a factor of five higher than that inferred from the optical and ultraviolet observations.

Abstract: ABSTRA C T We collect data at well-sampled frequencies from the radio to the g-ray range for the following three complete samples of blazars: the Slew survey, the 1-Jy samples of BL Lacs and the 2-Jy sample of flat-spectrum radio-loud quasars (FSRQs). The fraction of objects detected in g-rays (E * 100 MeV) is ,17, 26 and 40 per cent in the three samples respectively. Except for the Slew survey sample, g-ray detected sources do not differ either from other sources in each sample, or from all the g-ray detected sources, in terms of the distributions of redshift, radio and X-ray luminosities or of the broad-band spectral indices (radio to optical and radio to X-ray). We compute average spectral energy distributions (SEDs) from radio to g-rays for each complete sample and for groups of blazars binned according to radio luminosity, irrespective of the original classification as BL Lac or FSRQ. The resulting SEDs show a remarkable continuity in that (i) the first peak occurs in different frequency ranges for different samples/luminosity classes, with most luminous sources peaking at lower frequencies; (ii) the peak frequency of the g-ray component correlates with the peak frequency of the lower energy one; (iii) the luminosity ratio between the high and low frequency components increases with bolometric luminosity. The continuity of properties among different classes of sources and the systematic trends of the SEDs as a function of luminosity favour a unified view of the blazar phenomenon: a single parameter, related to luminosity, seems to govern the physical properties and radiation mechanisms in the relativistic jets present in BL Lac objects as well as in FSRQs. The general implications of this unified scheme are discussed while a detailed theoretical analysis, based on fitting continuum models to the individual spectra of most g-ray blazars, is presented in a separate paper.

Abstract: Photoexcited electron transfer between donor and acceptor molecular semiconductors provides a method of efficient charge generation following photoabsorption, which can be exploited in photovoltaic diodes1,2,3 But efficient charge separation and transport to collection electrodes is problematic, because the absorbed photons must be close to the donor–acceptor heterojunction, while at the same time good connectivity of the donor and acceptor materials to their respective electrodes is required Mixtures of acceptor and donor semiconducting polymers3,4 (or macromolecules5) can provide phase-separated structures which go some way to meeting this requirement, providing high photoconductive efficiencies Here we describe two-layer polymer diodes, fabricated by a lamination technique followed by controlled annealing The resulting structures provide good connectivity to the collection electrodes, and we achieve a short-circuit photovoltaic quantum efficiency of up to 29% at optimum wavelength, and an overall power conversion efficiency of 19% under a simulated solar spectrum Given the convenience of polymer processing, these results indicate a promising avenue towards practical applications for such devices

Abstract: The retinoblastoma protein (Rb) silences specific genes that are active in the S phase of the cell cycle and which are regulated by E2F transcription factors Rb binds to the activation domain of E2F and then actively represses the promoter by a mechanism that is poorly understood Here we show that Rb associates with a histone deacetylase, HDAC1, through the Rb 'pocket' domain Association with the deacetylase is reduced by naturally occurring mutations in the pocket and by binding of the human papilloma virus oncoprotein E7 We find that Rb can recruit histone deacetylase to E2F and that Rb cooperates with HDAC1 to repress the E2F-regulated promoter of the gene encoding the cell-cycle protein cyclin E Inhibition of histone deacetylase activity by trichostatin A (TSA) inhibits Rb-mediated repression of a chromosomally integrated E2F-regulated promoter Our results indicate that histone deacetylases are important for regulating the cell cycle and that active transcriptional repression by Rb may involve the modification of chromatin structure

Abstract: We report on a quantum optical experimental implementation of teleportation of unknown pure quantum states. This realizes all of the nonlocal aspects of the original scheme proposed by Bennett et al. and is equivalent to it up to a local operation. We exhibit results for the teleportation of a linearly polarized state and of an elliptically polarized state. We show that the experimental results cannot be explained in terms of a classical channel alone. The Bell measurement in our experiment can distinguish between all four Bell states simultaneously allowing, in the ideal case, a 100% success rate of teleportation. [S0031-9007(97)05275-7]

Abstract: Gallager's (1962) low-density binary parity check codes have been shown to have near-Shannon limit performance when decoded using a probabilistic decoding algorithm. We report the empirical results of error-correction using the analogous codes over GF(q) for q>2, with binary symmetric channels and binary Gaussian channels. We find a significant improvement over the performance of the binary codes, including a rate 1/4 code with bit error probability <10/sup -5/ at E/sub b//N/sub 0/=0.2 dB.

Abstract: In this paper, we clarify what steganography is and what it can do. We contrast it with the related disciplines of cryptography and traffic security, present a unified terminology agreed at the first international workshop on the subject, and outline a number of approaches-many of them developed to hide encrypted copyright marks or serial numbers in digital audio or video. We then present a number of attacks, some new, on such information hiding schemes. This leads to a discussion of the formidable obstacles that lie in the way of a general theory of information hiding systems (in the sense that Shannon gave us a general theory of secrecy systems). However, theoretical considerations lead to ideas of practical value, such as the use of parity checks to amplify covertness and provide public key steganography. Finally, we show that public key information hiding systems exist, and are not necessarily constrained to the case where the warden is passive.

Abstract: The recollection of past experiences allows us to recall what a particular event was, and where and when it occurred, a form of memory that is thought to be unique to humans. It is known, however, that food-storing birds remember the spatial location and contents of their caches. Furthermore, food-storing animals adapt their caching and recovery strategies to the perishability of food stores, which suggests that they are sensitive to temporal factors. Here we show that scrub jays (Aphelocoma coerulescens) remember 'when' food items are stored by allowing them to recover perishable 'wax worms' (wax-moth larvae) and non-perishable peanuts which they had previously cached in visuospatially distinct sites. Jays searched preferentially for fresh wax worms, their favoured food, when allowed to recover them shortly after caching. However, they rapidly learned to avoid searching for worms after a longer interval during which the worms had decayed. The recovery preference of jays demonstrates memory of where and when particular food items were cached, thereby fulfilling the behavioural criteria for episodic-like memory in non-human animals.

Abstract: The standard method for comparing an individual's test score with a normative sample involves converting the score to a z score and evaluating it using a table of the area under the normal curve. When the normative sample is small, a more appropriate method is to treat the individual as a sample of N = 1 and use a modified t test described by Sokal and Rohlf (1995). The use of this t test is illustrated with examples and its results compared to those from the standard procedure. It is suggested that the t test be used when the N of the normative sample is less than 50. Finally, a computer program that implements the modified t-test procedure is described. This program can be downloaded from the first author's website.

Abstract: T he melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) is a G-protein coupled, seven-trans-membrane receptor which is highly expressed in the hypothalamus, a region of the brain intimately involved in appetite regulation 1. It is a high-affinity receptor for αMSH, a product of the pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) gene, which inhibits feeding when administered to rodents 2. Hypothalamic POMC neurons are stimulated by leptin, an adipocyte-specific hormone which regulates appetite and energy expenditure, and constitute a link between leptin and the melanocortin system. Mc4r-deficient mice are hyper-phagic, severely obese, hyperinsulinaemic and show increased linear growth 3. Mice heterozygous for a null Mc4r allele exhibit weight gain intermediate to that seen in wild-type and homozygous mutant litter-mates. Additionally, ectopic expression in the brain of agouti 4 and agouti-related transcript 5 , natural antagonists of the MC4R ligand, αMSH, results in obesity in rodents. In humans, obesity syndromes associated with abnormalities in POMC (ref. 6) and prohormone processing defects involving POMC (ref. 7) have also been described. We have identified a cohort of severely obese children in whom no evidence for a recognized clinical syndrome or a structural hypothalamic cause for their obesity has been found. All are severely obese (mean body mass index (weight/height 2) is 34 kg/m 2) from an early age (<10 years). Sixty-three of these subjects were screened for mutations in MC4R by direct nucleotide sequencing. We identified one subject who was heterozygous for a 4-bp deletion at codon 211 (Fig. 1b). This results in a frameshift that introduces five aberrant amino acids culminating in a stop codon in the region encoding the fifth transmembrane domain, resulting in a truncated protein. As residues at the base of the fifth and sixth transmembrane domains are needed for G-protein binding and activation 8 , this mutation is likely to result in a non-functional receptor. No mutations were found in the 62 other subjects studied. The index patient II.1 (Fig. 1a) is four years old and is the only child from a non-consanguinous union. His weight is 32 kg (>99th centile), height 107 cm (91st cen-tile) and body mass index (BMI) is 28 kg/m 2 (>99th centile). His birthweight was 3.8 kg (50th centile), and progressive weight gain was noted from the age of four months (Fig. 2a). Abstract: We derive experimentally based estimates of the energy used by neural mechanisms to code known quantities of information. Biophysical measurements from cells in the blowfly retina yield estimates of the ATP required to generate graded (analog) electrical signals that transmit known amounts of information. Energy consumption is several orders of magnitude greater than the thermodynamic minimum. It costs 10(4) ATP molecules to transmit a bit at a chemical synapse, and 10(6)-10(7) ATP for graded signals in an interneuron or a photoreceptor, or for spike coding. Therefore, in noise-limited signaling systems, a weak pathway of low capacity transmits information more economically, which promotes the distribution of information among multiple pathways.
