Abstract: An optical fiber whose end face is polished to an angle θ close to the critical angle θc is proposed as an acoustical detector probe Since θc can be tuned by optical material dispersion of the glass fiber to bring θc close to θ, probe sensitivity can be controlled Also, tuning would allow the probe to be either phase or amplitude modulated by the acoustical wave, depending on whether θc were tuned to greater than or less than the incident angle θ

TL;DR: The effect of the Asian grass carp upon the zooplankton in three adjacent experimental ponds was studied for one year and Temporal variation rather than grass carp was probably responsible for those differences.
Abstract: The effect of the Asian grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella Val.) upon the zooplankton in three adjacent experimental ponds (0.139 ha each) was studied for one year. The ponds contained nine species of aquatic macrophytes. Grass carp were stocked into Pond 1 (65 per ha) and Pond 2 (611 per ha) three months after the study was started. At the time of stocking, physichochemical and biological parameters were similar among the ponds. Grass carp did not affect water quality and had little direct or indirect effect upon the zooplankton in the ponds. The abundance and species diversity of zooplankton (number of species, Shannon Index, and Simpson Index) were not significantly different (P < 0.05) between ponds prior to grass carp stocking. After stocking with grass carp, the number of species and species diversity were found to be significantly different (P < 0.05) between Pond 1 (low grass carp stocking rate) and Pond 2 (high grass carp stocking rate). Additionally, significant differences (P < 0.05) in populations between ponds were found for Lecane luna, Monostyla bulla, Lepadella ehrenbergii, Polyarthra sp., and Synchaeta sp. Temporal variation rather than grass carp was probably responsible for those differences. The number of zooplankton per group (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and species diversity were not significantly different (P<0.05) between ponds containing different stocking rates of grass carp. During the study, zooplankton were collected with a shallow-water sampler. No significant differences (P < 0.05) between collections were found for the sampler and a No. 20 mesh nylon zooplankton net.

TL;DR: The status of marine turtle populations in the KSC area was studied using data from previous results from ground and aerial surveillance conducted from 1976 to April 1979 as discussed by the authors, where various data were recorded on emergent turtles such as: species, weight, tag number (if previously tagged), time discovered, activity at discovery and the location of discovery.
Abstract: The status of marine turtle populations in the KSC area was studied using data from previous results from ground and aerial surveillance conducted from 1976 to April 1979. During ground surveillance, various data were recorded on emergent turtles such as: species, weight, tag number (if previously tagged), time discovered, activity at discovery and the location of discovery. Observations were also made on nesting and reproductive characteristics, population estimates, immigration and emigration and growth rate of the turtles. Mortality studies were additionally made and autopsies performed on dead turtles found in the area. It is concluded that further mortality documentation should be done just prior to and just after a future space launch operation in order to accurately assess the cause and effect relationship of such a launch on the turtle population.

TL;DR: In this paper, the economic impact of alternative public policies, ranging from a ban on the use of mechanically deboned meat to a free market approach, was analyzed with a simultaneous equations supply-demand model of the markets for table and processed beef and pork.
Abstract: Mechanical deboning is a technology that allows red meat packers and processors to recover fragments of meat that are left on the bones of carcasses after hand trimming. The economic impact of alternative public policies, ranging from a ban on the use of mechanically deboned meat to a free market approach, is analyzed with a simultaneous equations supply-demand model of the markets for table and processed beef and pork. The results indicate that the loss in economic welfare to society, as well as the price and quantity effects associated with present restrictions, are not insignificant.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of the working wife on the distribution of control in the family for specific product decisions was examined and it was shown that whether a wife is working or not affects her position in the control decision structure.
Abstract: This study examines the effect of the working wife on the distribution of control in the family for specific product decisions. Results lend general support for the proposition that whether a wife is working or not affects her position in the control decision structure in the family. However, the presence of children in the family and the reason for working had no effect on this distribution of control. A new methodological approach to assessing “power” in the family is utilized.

Abstract: a topic of continuing interest to students of mass communication and political science. One review of the findings in this field suggests that we should investigate &dquo;the importance of mass media portrayals of specific events, and of characteristic patterns of media use (Kraus and Davis, 1976: 28). Although the specific events studied are often crisis situations, such as assassinations or scandals, the topic of this investigation is

TL;DR: The authors found that nonvoters respond to fewer candidates and tend to rate some "outsider" figures more positively and "establishment" figures less positively than voters when compared to most candidates.
Abstract: An analysis of 1976 data indicates that nonvoters' images of presidential candidates do not differ drastically from the images expressed by voters. Nonvoters respond to fewer candidates and tend to rate some "outsider" figures more positively and "establishment" figures less positively. With regard to most candidates, however, nonvoters' perceptions resemble those of fellow partisan identifiers more than those of fellow nonvoters. Tests of candidate-related explanations of turnout provide more support for the "indifference" and "other preference" hypotheses than for alienation, but the utility of these explana tions varies across partisan groupings.

TL;DR: In this paper, responses from a consumer panel in South Carolina were used to evaluate consumers' selections of home and auto insurance coverages, and the results indicate that many consumers violate accepted decision rules for selecting coverages.
Abstract: Responses from a consumer panel in South Carolina were used to evaluate consumers' selections of homeowner's and auto insurance coverages. The results indicate that many consumers violate accepted decision rules for selecting coverages. Liability limits typically were below usually recommended levels, while most respondents had selected only small deductibles. Responses also indicated that a major portion of the respondents had not been provided information by their agents to assist them in the selection of coverage. Respondents who reported they had received information from their agents typically had made more appropriate selections than those who had not.

TL;DR: The role of first-level managers has changed from being goal-directed, task-oriented supervisors to being person-oriented co-ordinators and consultants as discussed by the authors with the advent of industrial democratisation, worker participation, job re-design, autonomous subgroups and workers' councils.
Abstract: With the advent of industrial democratisation, worker participation, job re‐design, autonomous sub‐groups and workers' councils, it has become apparent to managers as well as researchers that the role of first‐level managers has changed from being goal‐directed, task‐oriented supervisors to being person‐oriented co‐ordinators and consultants. This change has created a call for a new style of leadership, a style of leadership in which supervisors rely less upon the authority of their positions and in which they provide more room for their subordinates to strive for a certain degree of self‐fulfillment.

TL;DR: This paper examined what factors appear to trigger a police officer's decision to commit an individual to a medical facility for observation, and made a comparison between this study and an earlier paper by Egon Bittner.
Abstract: Police discretion is exercised in a variety of crisis contexts. This study examines what factors appear to trigger a police officer's decision to commit an individual to a medical facility for observation. In addition, a comparison is made between this study and an earlier paper by Egon Bittner. Data are drawn from a pencil and paper survey conducted in 17 small town Central Florida police departments for a totalpopulation of 189 patrol officers. The officers reported relatively few incidents that qualified for possible admission. Officers generally reported little effective formal training in this area. Rather the officers learn "on the job" a fact that created some frustrations. Officers and medicalpersonnel clashed over the relative weight to be given the officer's evaluation of the individual being committed.

TL;DR: The applicability of monitoring populations of Poccilia latipinna (sailfin molly) and its reproductive efforts as reliable indicators of environmental effects of aerospace activities in the Kennedy Space Center area was investigated.
Abstract: The applicability of monitoring populations of Poccilia latipinna (sailfin molly) and its reproductive efforts as reliable indicators of environmental effects of aerospace activities in the Kennedy Space Center area was investigated. Results show that the sailfin molly experiences drastic fluctuations in population and reproductive success and is not an appropriate factor for monitoring to establish perturbations of the environment due to space transportation system related activities.

TL;DR: The Kaiser Measures of Sampling Adequacy (KME) as discussed by the authors was developed to measure the psychometric adequacy of Semantic Differential data for factor analytic procedures, and it was used in determining the efficacy of one's semantic differential data.
Abstract: Version Two of the Kaiser Measures of Sampling Adequacy was derived for a typical six-concept Semantic Differential. The over-all indices indicated that both concept and total correlation matrices would lead to comparable decisions regarding the psychometric quality of the sample data sets. The individual measures, however, showed considerable variability for some scales, placing several in a range which would make them suspect psycho-metrically. It was recommended that the concept of psychometric adequacy be used in determining the efficacy of one's Semantic Differential data for factor analytic procedures.

TL;DR: GRASP (GRAphic SPecification), an interactive graphics system for software specification, is currently being developed by the authors at the University of Central Florida.
Abstract: Significant reductions in software development and maintenance costs can be realized by providing a total environment for the software life-cycle . This environment mus t provide automated tools for each phase of the cycle . At the macro level, the environment will assist in the development , documentation and maintenance of software systems . The development phase includes requirements specifications , design, coding and testing . Maintenance is required to eliminate latent errors introduced during the development phase, to improve performance of a software system or to enhance its capabilities . The probtem of providing adequate documentation for softwar e is a concern equal in magnitude to those of design an d implementation . GRASP (GRAphic SPecification), an interactive graphics system for software specification, is currently being de veloped by the authors at the University of Central Florida . GRASP is intended to be a total environment for software specification . The activities associated with software development an d maintenance produce a product which is the result of man machine interactions . This product should have a structur e that amalgamates the requirements of both man and ma chine . Figure 1 illustrates the components of progra m structure and design that form the adhesive substance binding man to machine . Programming languages and othe r documentation aids represent the program component s that attempt to satisfy the requirements of man ; algorithm s and data structures are objects born out of the requirement s dictated by machine .
