Abstract: Silica aerogels are among the lightest weight solid materials and exhibit other unique properties, in particular an outstanding insulation performance. However, these nanostructured highly porous materials show inherent brittleness that makes their processing and handling difficult and constrains their use in common daily applications. One of the most convincing and effective strategies to reinforce the silica aerogel structure is the manufacturing of aerogel composites with embedded fibres, which significantly contributes to widening their applications. This review encompasses a complete survey on scientific achievements related to silica aerogel composites reinforced with all types of fibres (natural, man-made, organic, inorganic and nanofibres), describing their synthesis approaches and properties. The influence of the embedment of different fibres on the final properties of the composites is thoroughly reported, considering their amount in the matrix and/or their specific characteristics, namely morphology, orientation and optical features. The applications linked to the fibre-reinforced silica aerogel composites are briefly addressed as well, evincing developments in typical functions of aerogels, as thermal and/or acoustic insulators and adsorbents, and also in emerging uses, for example as sensors or technical and protective apparel.

Abstract: Leaf decomposition of the exotic evergreen Eucalyptus globulus (eucalyptus), and three native deciduous tree species, Alnus glutinosa (alder), Castanea sativa (chestnut) and Quercus faginea (oak), was compared in a second order stream in Central Portugal. Changes in dry weight, nitrogen and polyphenolic compounds and microbial colonization were periodically assessed for three months. Negative exponential curves fit the leaf weight loss with time for all leaf species. Mass loss rate was in the order alder (K = 0.0161) > chestnut (K = 0.0079) > eucalyptus (K = 0.0068) > oak (K = 0.0037). Microbial colonization followed the same pattern as breakdown rates. Evidence of fungal colonization was observed in alder after 3 days in the stream, whereas it took 21 days in oak leaves to have fungal colonization. Fungal diversity was leaf species-dependent and increased with time. In all cases, percent nitrogen per unit leaf weight increased, at least, at the initial stages of decay while soluble polyphenolics (expressed as percentage per unit leaf weight) decreased rapidly in the first month of leaves immersion. Intrinsic factors such as nitrogen and polyphenolic content may explain differences in leaf decomposition. The possible incorporation of eucalyptus litter into secondary production in a reasonable time span is suggested, although community balance and structure might be affected by differences in allochthonous patterns determined by eucalyptus monocultures.

Abstract: We performed a meta-analysis of over 30 case-control studies of association between schizophrenia and a bi-allelic, Bali polymorphism in exon 1 of the dopamine D3 receptor gene. We observed a significant excess of both forms of homozygote in patients (P = 0.0009, odds ratio (OR) = 1.21, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) = 1.07-1.35) in the combined sample of 5351 individuals. No significant heterogeneity was detected between samples and the effects did not appear to be the product of publishing bias. In addition we undertook an independent, family-based association study of this polymorphism in 57 parent/proband trios, taken from unrelated European multiplex families segregating schizophrenia. A transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) showed a significant excess of homozygotes in schizophrenic patients (P = 0.004, odds ratio (OR) = 2.7, 95% CI = 1.35-5.86). Although no significant allelic association was observed, a significant association was detected with the 1-1 genotype alone (P = 0.02, OR = 2.32, 95% CI = 1.13-4.99). In addition when the results of the family-based association study were included in the meta-analysis, the homozygosity effect increased in significance (P = 0.0002, OR = 1.23, 95% CI = 1.09-1.38). The results of the meta-analysis and family-based association study provide independent support for a relationship between schizophrenia and homozygosity at the Bali polymorphism of the D3 receptor gene, or between a locus in linkage disequilibrium with it.
