TL;DR: The findings indicate that glia have a crucial role in glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and ammonia metabolism in brain.
Abstract: Light microscopy immunohistochemical techniques were used to examine the distribution of glutamine synthetase in rat brain. Glutamine synthetase was found to be localized in the glial cells. Neuronal cell bodies, endothelial cells, and choroid epithelium contained no enzyme. The findings indicate that glia have a crucial role in glutamic acid, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and ammonia metabolism in brain.

TL;DR: A strain of mice is generated that expresses the Cre recombinase in a spatial and temporal pattern like that observed for Emx1, and it is demonstrated that radial glia, Cajal-Retzius cells, glutamatergic neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytic cells of most pallial structures originate from an EmX1-expressing lineage.
Abstract: By homologous recombination of an internal ribosome entry site and Cre recombinase coding region into the 3′-untranslated region of the mouse Emx1 gene, we have generated a strain of mice, Emx1IREScre, that expresses the Cre recombinase in a spatial and temporal pattern like that observed for Emx1. When mated to reporter strains, these mice are a sensitive means to fate-map the Emx1-expressing cells of the developing forebrain. Our results demonstrate that radial glia, Cajal-Retzius cells, glutamatergic neurons, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes of most pallial structures originate from an Emx1-expressing lineage. On the other hand, most of the pallial GABAergic neurons arise outside the Emx1-expressing lineage. Structures that are located near the basal ganglia (e.g., the amygdala and endopiriform nuclei) are not uniformly derived from Emx1-expressing cells.

TL;DR: Important considerations for designing biodegradable hydrogels for cell encapsulation are described and recent advances in material design and their applications in tissue engineering are highlighted.
Abstract: Encapsulating cells in biodegradable hydrogels offers numerous attractive features for tissue engineering, including ease of handling, a highly hydrated tissue-like environment for cell and tissue growth, and the ability to form in vivo. Many properties important to the design of a hydrogel scaffold, such as swelling, mechanical properties, degradation, and diffusion, are closely linked to the crosslinked structure of the hydrogel, which is controlled through a variety of different processing conditions. Degradation may be tuned by incorporating hydrolytically or enzymatically labile segments into the hydrogel or by using natural biopolymers that are susceptible to enzymatic degradation. Because cells are present during the gelation process, the number of suitable chemistries and formulations are limited. In this review, we describe important considerations for designing biodegradable hydrogels for cell encapsulation and highlight recent advances in material design and their applications in tissue engineering.

TL;DR: A hierarchically nanostructured gel (HNG) based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polypyrrole (PPy) that serves as an independent solar vapour generator that enables highly efficient solar vapours generation.
Abstract: Solar vapour generation is an efficient way of harvesting solar energy for the purification of polluted or saline water. However, water evaporation suffers from either inefficient utilization of solar energy or relies on complex and expensive light-concentration accessories. Here, we demonstrate a hierarchically nanostructured gel (HNG) based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polypyrrole (PPy) that serves as an independent solar vapour generator. The converted energy can be utilized in situ to power the vaporization of water contained in the molecular meshes of the PVA network, where water evaporation is facilitated by the skeleton of the hydrogel. A floating HNG sample evaporated water with a record high rate of 3.2 kg m−2 h−1 via 94% solar energy from 1 sun irradiation, and 18–23 litres of water per square metre of HNG was delivered daily when purifying brine water. These values were achievable due to the reduced latent heat of water evaporation in the molecular mesh under natural sunlight. Effective energy confinement via tailored water transport in hierarchical nanostructured gels enables highly efficient solar vapour generation.
