TL;DR: The authors reviewed the business literature to define core organizational values, discuss their impact on employees and organizations, and present the key reasons why most institutions have not developed effective core values, and suggested that a spiritual leadership philosophy is needed for organizational executives to articulate, communicate, and implement truly meaningful and authentic core values.
Abstract: Core values have been viewed as one important way that both private and public sector institutions can improve organizational effectiveness and enhance employee attitudes and behaviors. Despite the strong case for the importance of values, many organizations have not gained their full benefits. In fact, core values poorly articulated and implemented can have a significant negative impact on both employees and organizations. This paper seeks to review the business literature to define core organizational values, discuss their impact on employees and organizations, and present the key reasons why most institutions have not developed effective values. Next, it is suggested that a spiritual leadership philosophy is needed for organizational executives to articulate, communicate, and implement truly meaningful and authentic core values. A number of applications of these core industry values to the public sector are provided as well as directions for future research.

TL;DR: In this article, a fiber optic guidewire with a plurality of openings that provide variable stiffness and tracking characteristics between at least one proximal segment and one distal segment of the guidewires is described.
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention comprise a fiber optic guidewire having a hypotube with a plurality of openings that provide variable stiffness and tracking characteristics between at least one proximal segment and one distal segment of the guidewire. In some embodiments, the guidewire further comprises a mandrel disposed within the hypotube, the mandrel cooperating with the optical fibers to permit the distal end of the hypotube to be shaped as desired by a user. Methods of manufacturing and using the guidewire are also disclosed.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of planting soil mix design on the hydrologic and water quality performance of bioretention cells is investigated, and three investigations are conducted to determine the influence.
Abstract: Municipalities are increasingly interested in using rain gardens, or bioretention cells, as a “best management practice” (BMP) for storm-water management and as a component of low impact development. However, improved technical reference materials are needed to determine the influence of planting soil mix design on the hydrologic and water quality performance of bioretention cells. This article describes three investigations undertaken to determine the influence of planting soil mix characteristics. The first was to identify the bioretention cell design characteristics and methodologies used by different agencies. The second was a laboratory investigation on the soil characteristics that influence performance including field capacity, saturated hydraulic conductivity, soil moisture content, organic content, dry bulk density, porosity, and sediment grain size distribution. The third was to quantify the effectiveness of bioretention cells as a storm-water BMP by designing, constructing, and monitoring two f...

TL;DR: In more than 850 papers published in the Symposium for the Application of Geophysics to Environmental and Engineering Problems (SAGEEP) between 1988 and 2001, 63 included self-potential (SP) as a key word, but most mentioned it only in passing as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Self-potential (SP) is the method that everyone knows about but nobody seems to appreciate. Out of more than 850 papers published in the Symposium for the Application of Geophysics to Environmental and Engineering Problems (SAGEEP) between 1988 and 2001, 63 included SP as a key word, but most mentioned it only in passing.

TL;DR: This paper found that mortality saliency would increase the tendency of participants given feedback that they had strong conformist tendencies to underestimate social consensus for their attitudes and deviant tendency to exaggerate social consensus, and that competing motives for inclusion and individuation both function to control concerns about mortality.
Abstract: An experiment assessed the proposition that competing motives for inclusion and individuation both function to control concerns about mortality. Combining ideas from terror management theory and optimal distinctiveness theory, the authors hypothesized that mortality salience would increase the tendency of participants given feedback that they had strong conformist tendencies to underestimate social consensus for their attitudes and the tendency of participants given feedback that they were deviant to exaggerate social consensus for their attitudes. Participants were given either one or the other type of feedback, responded to open-ended questions about either their own death or their next important exam, completed a measure of social projection in which they indicated their own attitudes, and then estimated the percentage of the general population that shared their opinions. Results on a social projection measure consisting of the partial correlation between own and others' attitudes, controlling for soci...
