TL;DR: In this paper, an assessment quantifying the impact of urbanization on temperature trends from the U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) is described and compared using a pairing method that controls for differences in instrument type and via spatial gridding to account for the uneven distribution of stations.
Abstract: [1] An assessment quantifying the impact of urbanization on temperature trends from the U.S. Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) is described. Stations were first classified as urban and nonurban (rural) using four different proxy measures of urbanity. Trends from the two station types were then compared using a pairing method that controls for differences in instrument type and via spatial gridding to account for the uneven distribution of stations. The comparisons reveal systematic differences between the raw (unadjusted) urban and rural temperature trends throughout the USHCN period of record according to all four urban classifications. According to these classifications, urbanization accounts for 14–21% of the rise in unadjusted minimum temperatures since 1895 and 6–9% since 1960. The USHCN version 2 homogenization process effectively removes this urban signal such that it becomes insignificant during the last 50–80 years. In contrast, prior to 1930, only about half of the urban signal is removed. Accordingly, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Institute for Space Studies urban-correction procedure has essentially no impact on USHCN version 2 trends since 1930, but effectively removes the residual urban-rural temperature trend differences for years before 1930 according to all four urban proxy classifications. Finally, an evaluation of the homogenization of USHCN temperature series using subsets of rural-only and urban-only reference series from the larger U.S. Cooperative Observer (Coop) Network suggests that the composition of Coop stations surrounding USHCN stations is sufficiently “rural” to limit the aliasing of urban heat island signals onto USHCN version 2 temperature trends during homogenization.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simulated fire and hit indicator apparatus and method includes two opponent stations having a gun and a target device and a master control unit, each of which generates a dispersed trigger-active signal and a focused bullet signal.
Abstract: A simulated fire and hit indicator apparatus and method includes two opponent stations having a gun device and a target device and a master control unit. Each gun device generates a dispersed trigger-active signal and a focused bullet signal; preferably in the form of a modulated pulse burst powering infrared emitters. Detectors, preferably in the form of phototransistors, are mounted in each target to sense the bullet signals and each operates to produce a hit signal when struck by an opponent's bullet signal. The trigger-active signals are detected, again preferably by phototransistors, and produce fire signals corresponding to respective gun devices. Each station includes processing circuitry to produce uniform pulse bursts representative of the fire and hit signals of the station, and the signals may be mixed and may be used to enable a radio transmitter that broadcasts the fire and hit data to a receiver on the master control. The master control includes decoding circuits to separate the data into component signals corresponding to the fire and hit status of each station. The master control outputs all fire data, but includes logic circuits that prohibit output of a later received hit signal and implements output for an earlier received hit signal. Accordingly, the method comprises the production and processing of these various signals.

TL;DR: M Males and females with any sexual interest in children reported higher likelihoods of engaging in other antisocial or criminal behaviors and also reported more dysfunctional childhoods (i.e., histories of sexual abuse, insecure parent–child attachments).
Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to explore the extent to which men and women in the general population report sexual interest in children and to examine distinct developmental experiences associated with self-reported sexual interest. Participants (262 females and 173 males) were recruited online and completed a questionnaire assessing sexual interest and adverse childhood experiences. Among men, 6% indicated some likelihood of having sex with a child if they were guaranteed they would not be caught or punished, as did 2% of women. Nine percent of males and 3% of females indicated some likelihood of viewing child pornography on the Internet. Overall, nearly 10% of males and 4% of females reported some likelihood of having sex with children or viewing child pornography. Males and females with any sexual interest in children reported higher likelihoods of engaging in other antisocial or criminal behaviors and also reported more dysfunctional childhoods (i.e., histories of sexual abuse, insecure parent-child attachments). Theoretical implications of the findings and suggestions for preventing the sexual victimization of children are provided.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate that the application of HR policies for mid-level marketing managers vary significantly both between firms pursuing alternative business strategies (i.e., Prospectors, Analyzers, Low Cost Defenders and Differentiated Defenders) and within each of those business strategy types by the type of marketing strategy adopted.

TL;DR: In this article, an outer annular transistor (212) and one or more inner annular transistors (214) are provided to isolate the component from the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation, as well.
Abstract: Annular transistors (210) are positioned with respect to the n-well diffusion region (218) so that the active channels of the transistors are completely within the diffusion region, thereby avoiding the formation of the edges at the boundary between n+ active channel regions and adjacent field oxide region (the bird's beak region), which are susceptible to the effect of the ionizing radiation. The edgeless design of the gate arrays reduces the degradation of the transistors caused by the bird's beak leakage, while allowing for an unmodified commercial process flow for fabrication. An outer annular transistor (212) and one or more inner annular transistors (214) may be provided. The outer transistor may be used as an active transistor in the formation of logic circuits, or may provide isolation for the one or more inner transistors, which may be connected to form logic circuits. The design preferably includes a provision for readily disabling the radiation resistant system so the same design can be easily transformed into a non-radiation resistant design. Other electrical components such as a resistor may be formed with another gate electrode to isolate the component from the deleterious effects of ionizing radiation, as well.
