TL;DR: In this paper, a modification of the point-ion model is proposed which provides an approximate correction for ion-size effects by neglecting the variation of the trial function over the ion cores in the evaluation of matrix elements.
Abstract: A modification of the point-ion model is proposed which provides an approximate correction for ion-size effects. The difference between the optimum pseudopotential for the smoothest pseudo-wave-function and the point-ion potential is treated as an ion-size correction to the Hamiltonian, appropriate to a smooth variational trial function. By neglecting the variation of the trial function over the ion cores in the evaluation of matrix elements, one obtains a simple, approximate form for the pseudopotential: ${V}_{p}={V}_{\mathrm{PI}}+{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}[{A}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}+(\overline{V}\ensuremath{-}{U}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}){B}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}]\ensuremath{\delta}(\mathrm{r}\ensuremath{-}{\mathrm{r}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}})$, where ${V}_{\mathrm{PI}}$ is the point-ion potential, ${U}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ is the potential at ion $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ due to the other ions, and $\overline{V}$ is the average potential. The coefficients ${A}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ and ${B}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ are properties of the ions alone, and have been computed for a large set of ions. The approximate pseudopotential is applied to the calculation of ionization potentials of alkali atoms, where it works well, and of $F$-band energies in alkali halides and alkaline-earth fluorides, where it is found that all of the coefficients ${A}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ must be reduced by a factor of 0.53 in order to obtain agreement with experiment. With the adjusted pseudopotential coefficients, the theory accounts well not only for the Ivey law in alkali halides, but also for deviations from the Ivey law. In addition, the seemingly anomalous $F$-band energy in Ba${\mathrm{F}}_{2}$ is accounted for. The empirically adjusted constants may be useful in other color-center problems as well.

TL;DR: The Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa (Girard), is an all-female species native to southern Texas and north-eastern Mexico and in rare instances some offspring of P. formosa females exhibit paternal characters and thus are hybrids6,8,9.
Abstract: THE Amazon molly, Poecilia formosa (Girard), is an all-female species native to southern Texas and north-eastern Mexico1. In the northern part of the range, P. formosa is fertilized by males of P. latipinna; in the southern part by a species of the P. sphenops complex. Reproduction is usually by gynogenesis; no introgression of paternal characters into P. formosa stocks has been observed in any of the several laboratories in which they have been maintained during the past 36 yr1–7. With no genetic material being transferred from the male parent to the offspring, all P. formosa which have descended from a single progenitor should possess the same genotype and constitute a clone. The existence of several clones in natural populations has been demonstrated by tissue transplantation4,5. In rare instances some offspring of P. formosa females exhibit paternal characters and thus are hybrids6,8,9. In the Genetics Laboratory of the New York Aquarium where several clones of P. formosa have been maintained since 1960 by either mating them to males of P. vittata or P. sphenops (black molly stock), eighteen hybrids (about 1 per cent) have been obtained. Of these, three were sired by P. vittata and fifteen by P. sphenops.

TL;DR: It is found that, with these defined criteria, an optimal selection and ordering procedure can be obtained by establishing a generalized Karhunen-Lo-Lo coordinate system for the stochastic processes describing the input patterns.
Abstract: A method is proposed to aid the designer in selecting and ordering the feature observations for the pattern recognition system, without requiring the computation of the probability of misrecognition or the complete knowledge of the probability distribution for the input patterns under consideration. The essential viewpoint is basically that of pre-weighting the feature observations according to their relative importance in describing the input patterns, regardless of the specific decision structure in a recognition system. “Relative importance≓ is defined in the sense of (1) committing less error when the representation of patterns is subject to approximation due to the finite number of feature observations, and (2) carrying more information regarding the discrimination of pattern classes. It is found that, with these defined criteria, an optimal selection and ordering procedure can be obtained by establishing a generalized Karhunen-Lo\`eve coordinate system for the stochastic processes describing the input patterns. Necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of coordinates to be the generalized K\2-L system are derived and the resulting selection and ordering procedure is given. Computer-simulated experiments in character recognition are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract: Within each of 6 elementary school grades, a randomly selected 23% of the children were reported to their teachers as showing unusual potential for intellectual gains. All Ss were also administered a task designed to measure the accuracy of their perception of vocal communications of emotion by male and female speakers. After 4 mo. the “special” children scoring high in accuracy of perception of emotion as expressed by a female speaker showed significantly greater profit from the teachers' favorable expectations than did those low in accuracy. “Special” male Ss high in accuracy in perceiving emotion in a male showed significantly less profit from the expectancy after 4 mo. but significantly greater profit after being away from the teacher who received the expectancy for a 1-yr. period.

TL;DR: This chapter discusses the practical utility of various synthetic approaches to azaindoles to organize their properties, which are stable, colorless, and high-melting solids with little, if any, odor.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the practical utility of various synthetic approaches to azaindoles to organize their properties. The only benzo derivatives to be considered are a few pyrroloquinolines. The most successful method for preparing azaindoles has been the Madelung synthesis that involves a base-catalyzed cyclization of o -acylaminotoluenes or picolines. Eighteen azaindoles have been prepared by various modifications of the Madelung ring closure. Azaindoles are stable, colorless, and high-melting solids with little, if any, odor. They fail to give a positive test with Ehrlich's reagent or the pine-splint reaction. Also in contrast to indoles, they are stable to boiling mineral acids and darken on exposure to air very gradually. Like pyrroles and indoles, they are stable to aqueous alkaline solutions.

TL;DR: An experimental system for synthesis by rule has been developed, consisting of a parallel-resonance synthesizer, a laboratory computer, and two computer programs that enable the variation of the transmission rate editing of the stored values, disk storage and retrieval of the parameter value sets for a large number of utterances.
Abstract: An experimental system for synthesis by rule has been developed, consisting of a parallel-resonance synthesizer, a laboratory computer, and two computer programs. To drive the synthesizer, values for each of its parameters must be specified at appropriate intervals. The "Rules" program (an elaboration of earlier work done with Holmes and Shearme at the Joint Speech Research Unit) accepts an input string representing an utterance phonemically, and an auxiliary input consisting of rules in tabular form for synthesis of the segmental and prosodic phonemes of a particular dialect. From these inputs, the sets of parameter values for the utterance are calculated. The "Executive" program reads the parameter value sets into memory and transmits them to the synthesizer. This program also enables the variation of the transmission rate editing of the stored values, disk storage and retrieval of the parameter value sets for a large number of utterances and synthesis of a sequence of utterances.

TL;DR: In this article, the Rydberg states of a diatomic molecule are characterized by hydrogenic quantum numbers and the auto-ionization lifetimes of the diatomic system are calculated.
Abstract: When one of the electrons in a diatomic molecule is highly excited, the molecular system is, in many respects, similar to a hydrogen atom; a single electron moves in the field of a small, singly charged core. These states, called Rydberg states of the diatomic molecule, can essentially be characterized by hydrogenic quantum numbers $n$ and $l$, provided that $n$ is large enough so that the orbital radius of the Rydberg electron is large compared to the dimensions of the ion core. However, unlike the hydrogen atom, the ionic core generates not only a Coulomb field, but higher multipole potentials as well. In addition, the ionic core can be vibrationally and rotationally excited with excitation energies greater than the binding energy of the Rydberg electron. When this happens, auto-ionization can occur. This process is very similar to the nuclear internal-conversion process in which an excited nucleus, instead of emitting a $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ ray, de-excites by giving up its energy directly to an atomic electron. By taking advantage of the similarity between the autoionization and internal-conversion processes, auto-ionization lifetimes for Rydberg states of ${\mathrm{H}}_{2}$ and HD are calculated. These results are compared with experimental results and with those obtained from an alternative approach.

TL;DR: The lipase system from Geotrichum candidum preferentially hydrolyzed oleic acid, regardless of position, from the four possible racemic triglycerides containing oleate and palmitate, and it appears that the enzyme may be specific forcis-9-unsaturation as well as forc is-9,cis-12-unaturation.
Abstract: The lipase system fromGeotrichum candidum preferentially hydrolyzed oleic acid, regardless of position, from the four possible racemic triglycerides containing oleate and palmitate. The rate of hydrolysis of these glycerides was most rapid when the substrate contained two moles of oleate. This acid was also preferentially released from a series of triglycerides containing oleate and two moles of a saturated fatty acid. The chain length of the latter did not alter the specificity for oleate.Equimolar quantities of oleic and linoleic acids were released when triolein and trilinolein (equimolar mixture) were hydrolyzed by this lipase. No differentiation between oleate and palmitoleate was observed when racemic glyceryl 1-palmitoleate-2,3-dioleate was the substrate. However, only 7.2 M%cis-vaccenic acid was released from glyceryl 1-cis-vaccenate-2,3-dioleate and 5.4 M% petroselinic acid from glyceryl 1-palmitoleate-2,3-dipetroselinate. It therefore appears that the enzyme may be specific forcis-9-unsaturation as well as forcis-9,cis-12-unsaturation. When specificity was assumed, the fatty acid compositions of the diglycerides obtained from digestions withG. candidum were close to theoretical.

Abstract: The coupled oscillations of a liquid with a free surface in an annular circular cylindrical tank are studied. The walls of the tank are assumed to be rigid, and the bottom is considered an elastic membrane. The liquid is assumed to be inviscid and incompressible, and the motions are restricted to be small. Equations are obtained for the coupled natural frequencies; these reduce readily to the various limiting cases. Equations are also obtained for establishing the wave heights of the free surface of the liquid and the mode shapes of the membrane. Several numerical examples are presented for axisymmetric oscillations. In general, the effect of the flexibility of the annular bottom on the sloshing frequencies is small, except for very shallow liquid levels and low tensions in the membrane bottom; and its effect is less pronounced for higher frequencies. The first two mode shapes of the free surface of the liquid and the corresponding mode shapes of the annular membrane bottom are determined.

TL;DR: Parasitization of nymphs collected on Daucus carota L., Solidago spp.
Abstract: Tarnished plant bugs, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), were collected in the vicinity of Storrs, Conn., and the parasitoids were reared from them. Leiophron pallipes Curtis was the principal hymenopterous parasitoid obtained. A few Euphoriana uniformis Gahan were reared from tarnished plant bugs from a field near East Hartford, Conn., but were not obtained from bugs collected around Storrs. Tarnished plant bug nymphs were collected from plants of several taxa and were dissected to determine parasitization. Nymphs found on Erigeron spp. were much more heavily parasitized than nymphs collected on other plants. The highest parasitization in July occurred on E. strigosus Muhl. and E. annuus (L.), ranging from more than 80 to nearly 60% in different fields during this period. The highest parasitization during August was on E. Canadensis L., where more than 30% of the nymphs were parasitized. The highest parasitization on other plants during July and August was 11% on Verbena spp. Parasitization of nymphs collected on Daucus carota L., Solidago spp., Polygonium pennsylvanicum L., Medicago sativa L., Trifolium pretense L., Chenopodium album L., Oenothera biennis L., and Amaranthus retrofiexus L. was negligible or nonexistent during both months.

TL;DR: Porcine calcitonin preparations injected subcutaneously into 30 adult turtles in doses of 0.1, 3.0 or 10.0 MRC U/k body weight were ineffective in altering serum calcium concentrations, andCalcitonin activity appears to reside in the ultimobranchial body rather than in the thyroid of turtles, as has been demonstrated recently for several other nonmammalian vertebrate species.
Abstract: Acid extracts of turtle (Chrysemys picta, Pseudemys scripta) thyroid glands and ultimobranchial bodies were assayed in young Sprague-Dawley rats. Subcutaneous injection of 0.5 ml of the preparations was administered and blood samples were obtained by cardiac puncture after 1 hr. Ultimobranchial preparations caused an average decrease in serum calcium values of 19%, while thyroid extracts were without significant effect. Calcitonin activity therefore appears to reside in the ultimobranchial body rather than in the thyroid of turtles, as has been demonstrated recently for several other nonmammalian vertebrate species. Porcine calcitonin preparations (Armour) injected subcutaneously into 30 adult turtles (Chrysemys picta) in doses of 0.1, 3.0 or 10.0 MRC U/k body weight were ineffective in altering serum calcium concentrations. Measurements were made at 1, 4 and 24 hr and 3, 5, 7 and 14 days after hormone injection. (Endocrinology 83: 1145, 1968)

TL;DR: A factor analysis demonstrated the logic of combining the scales into these two factors and suggested that the new short-form PARI is a useful technique for assessing authoritarian attitudes toward childrearing.
Abstract: The Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) was revised and shortened in an attempt to assess authoritarianism and warmth. A factor analysis demonstrated the logic of combining the scales into these two factors. The relationship between these factors and authoritarianism was explored by testing 46 college students with the PARI short form and both forms of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) steropathy scales. Both PARI factors were significantly related to authoritarianism measured as a cluster of attitudes (Form I of the SSRC) but not as a personality variable (Form P of the SSRC). The over-all pattern of results suggests that the new short-form PARI is a useful technique for assessing authoritarian attitudes toward childrearing.
