TL;DR: The data indicate that the great majority of multifocal lung cancers have a common clonal origin and that multifocality in lung cancer represents local and regional intrapulmonary metastasis.
Abstract: Methods We analyzed 70 lung tumors from 30 patients (23 females and seven males) who underwent surgical resection for lung epithelial tumors, of whom 26 had non – small cell carcinomas and four had carcinoid/ atypical carcinoid tumors. All patients had multiple tumors (two to five) involving one or both lungs. Genomic DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tissue sections using laser capture microdissection and analyzed for loss of heterozygosity, TP53 mutations, and X-chromosome inactivation status. The percentage (95% confidence interval [CI]) of patients in whom there were concordant patterns of genetic alteration was calculated. Results All 30 case subjects showed loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in at least one and at most four of the six polymorphic microsatellite markers. Completely concordant LOH patterns between synchronous and metachronous cancers in individual patients were seen in 26 (87%) of 30 informative patients (95% CI = 75% to 99%). Identical point mutations were present in eight of 10 patients who exhibited TP53 mutation by sequencing. Tumors in 18 (78%) of 23 female patients (95% CI = 67% to 98%) showed identical X-chromosome inactivation patterns. Combining the results of LOH studies, TP53 mutation screening analyses, and X-chromosome inactivation data, we demonstrated that the multiple separate tumors in 23 (77%) of 30 patients (95% CI = 62% to 92%) had identical genetic changes, consistent with monoclonal origin of the separate tumors. Conclusions Our data indicate that the great majority of multifocal lung cancers have a common clonal origin and that multifocality in lung cancer represents local and regional intrapulmonary metastasis.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe a convenient synthesis route to cobalt oxide nanomaterials (both single and mixed-phase CoO and Co3O4) supported on Ti.
Abstract: The design and assembly of suitable nanosystems are key issues in the development of smaller and more efficient lithium batteries. To this regard, cobalt oxides possess very favorable properties for use as negative electrode materials. In this work, we describe a convenient synthesis route to cobalt oxide nanomaterials (both single- and mixed-phase CoO and Co3O4) supported on Ti. The systems are grown by chemical vapor deposition starting from an innovative second-generation molecular source, Co(hfa)2·TMEDA (hfa = 1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoro-2,4-pentanedionate, TMEDA = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine). Controlled variations of the substrate temperature and O2 pressure in the reaction atmosphere enabled tailoring both the phase composition and the system morphology. The electrochemical properties of the obtained nanosystems were evaluated by galvanostatic measurements and impedance spectroscopy. The results showed excellent cycling performances and very high specific capacity values, offering attractive pe...

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of low-level chromium substitution in Na3V2-xCrx(PO4)3 (0≤x≤0.4), a potential cathode material in Na-ion cells, has been examined.
Abstract: The effect of low-level chromium substitution in Na3V2-xCrx(PO4)3 (0≤x≤0.4), a potential cathode material in Na-ion cells, has been examined. A suitable synthesis procedure is developed to obtain composites of crystalline NASICON phosphate and an amorphous carbon phase to enhance the electrical conductivity of the electrode. The optimized cathode materials were characterized by using X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques. The electrochemical evaluation was carried out by using galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods. The activity of the V5+/V4+ redox couple at approximately 4 V is remarkable for the samples containing chromium. A reversible capacity of 107 mAh g−1 with a coulombic efficiency of 99 % was determined for Na3V1.9Cr0.1(PO4)3 after 40 cycles. The observed performance correlates with a good kinetic response, resulting from low charge-transfer resistance and high diffusion coefficient.

TL;DR: An overview of the different applications of liposomes as carriers, and the advantages and the limitations of the analytical methods described to control their features and to determine their ingredients are provided.
Abstract: Liposomal delivery systems (LDSs) are effective vehicles to incorporate active agents into compartmentalized structures, such as living cells and foods. The increasing interest in the use of these systems in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food and nutritional industries is because liposomes can encapsulate and/or anchor water-soluble and/or lipid-soluble substances. Pharmaceutical formulations involving liposomes allow spatial and temporal distribution of the drug in the body to be changed, reducing unwanted toxic side effects and increasing efficiency of treatment. Analytical chemistry has an extensive role in the development of adequate methods to control the effectiveness of the numerous liposomal systems that have been developed recently, involving species such as therapeutic drugs, cosmetics, enzymes, and nucleic acids. This article provides an overview of the different applications of liposomes as carriers, and the advantages and the limitations of the analytical methods described to control their features and to determine their ingredients.
